I later came across a refutal to the graph: http://i.imgur.com/6JNyYOl.jpg . The man/woman in this imgur critically analyses every part of the original graph removing all the misleading parts and giving us a clear look at the data. I did not find a flaw in his logic thus am inclined to agree with him.
