So, if you look at the title, and the way I phrased things, you might think at first that I come off as a troll. I wouldn't begrudge you this. After all, we all know that orgasms are the best thing ever, right? It's probably the only thing red and blue pillers would agree about, right?

But I say you're wrong. Yeah, I phrased my title to be tongue in cheek, but I genuinely believe that orgasm is what makes relationships fall apart. And I brought backup for this claim, so sit tight.

First, some anecdotal experience - which you should be able to check for yourself. I'll ask you this question: why are friendships more stable than romantic relationships? In a romantic relationship, tension is often high when the honeymoon phase wears off. Why is that? Tension like the kind relationships bring with it never seems to happen with people you're friends with. Why is that? What makes friendships so different? Even close friendships with people you live with don't seem to turn sour. What's so special about people you have a romantic relationship with? - I'll tell you: You have orgasms with those people, that's what.

If that doesn't do it for you (and honestly, I doubt I'll be able to convince anybody, but hey, I've got some free time, so why not try, right?), here's some data: http://reuniting.info/science

If you don't want to read this stuff, I can abbreviate. Y'all might be familiar with the coolidge effect. You put a male and a female rat in a cage. They bone. Lots. After a while, the male gets tired of the female and doesn't bone her much anymore. At some point they stop altogether. But take the female out and put a new one in and fwoosh, the male rat is at it again right away. The same goes for the female's arousal through displays. After having had sex, the rats grow tired of each other.

There is brain chemistry at work here. At the point of orgasm, a massive amount of dopamine is released. Along with prolactin. Prolactin is an inhibitor of oxytocin. Oxytocin, if you're unaware, is what's called the "love hormone".

I was surprised when I found out that the neurochemical aftereffects of orgasm don't last just for the obvious few hours to a day that everyone knows of and laughs about (the guy getting tired and falling asleep), but its subtle effects actually last for 14 days. For women, it's less noticeable and starts maybe 4 days after, so those effects are often never ascribed to orgasm and so the women start ascribing their disturbed state of mind to their partners doing something wrong.

So, what can be done to deal with this? Are we programmed by evolution to keep searching for new partners after a while?

Well, yes and no. You see, we also evolved to be pair bonding creatures. So while we're stuck in the orgasm cycle, our program for bonding and our program for mating are constantly at war. We want to bond to others, to cuddle, be intimate, and to be close. We are also programmed for that, and more physical closeness strengthens the bond.

It's a paradox, isn't it? We want to be together, yet the neurochemical effects of orgasm push us apart and make us miserable.

What can be done?

Sex without orgasm. Yeah, you heard me right. It's not as outlandish as it sounds. Tantra and Taoist practitioners have been advocating for this since ancient times. Also, an American scientist in the 1900's came up with something called "Karezza", which is basically slow gentle sex without orgasm. From all the people I ever heard of who practiced it, I only heard amazing things, and I can add my own voice to theirs. It really does bring stability to relationships. I am more happy, content and fulfilled than ever, and so is my partner.
