It's a paraphilia and it can have a bunch of different reasons like traumas, low self-esteem, "perfect boyfriend" syndrome (a jailed person can give you validation of being in relationship while also requiring zero real work or efforts), a lack of other ways to get validation/love etc., although quite often it can be hard to pinpoint why exactly this person's sexuality has got fucked up. There are people who get off to door knobs or pain, so...it's not really surprising.

Some people have weird fetishes, they often stem from childhood experiences and it's not really worth focusing on such a small number of people. And some are twisted enough themselves they might actually see compatibility with a serial killer, again a small number.

But ultimately, I think you need look no further than Harley Quinn to understand. These women tend to be unwell in the brain bits themselves, believe they can save or change him, and ultimately are taken in by it into an abusive cycle.

There's also the beauty and the beast aspect obviously.

Casey Anthony that killed her daughter got love letters from men too and her lawyer even married her and gave her a job at his law firm.
