I once again have to say that just because you are not praised for something doesn't mean you are being shamed for it. Women are not praised for cowardice but theyare not shamed for it either. There's definitely factor of that too - especially when it comes to parents pressuring their children, but I'm of the opinion that global societal pressures develop only for "in your face stuff", ie there's strong short term occam bias, rather than some complex planning for retirement in abstract sense that parents do.

People in general hate low class because they steal shit, not because their nephews have to care for em. This in turn creates incentives to bring in various stereotype signifiers to identify low class that serve as a proxy for that - bachelor, skin color etc.

As for why the stereotype was stronger for women - it's the same as today. It's exceedingly trivial for woman to find suitor, ergo, there must be something seriously wrong with a spinster per common sense. Men get a little bit of affirmative action in this judgement because they have inherent difficulty associated.

But why does she have to? Maybe she doesn't want a family. Maybe they just don't like men or don't like to live with men. Maybe they never found someone to love. Back in the days spinsters and bchelors were a burden for society but nowdays we have a government to take cre of them, so why do you need to find a reason to shame woman for singlehood? It is a shaming, because the only reason you could for a woman to remain single is that there's something is wrong with her.
