I think now it is because whore has become synonymous with "slut," but whore used to be a "job title."

I'm watching this show Harlots on Hulu.

inb4 Yes I know TV isn't reals. Okay now that is out of the way.

It chronicles the lives of female sex workers in London during the 1700s. There are unfortunate street prostitutes, women working in "bawdy houses" /whore houses/ brothels, and finally the more elite "mistresses."

The brothels range in allure from houses that appeal to exotic interests, houses that showcase women that look more "middle class/working of the day," and houses that showcase women who cater to the the aristocrats and rich men.

There's a scene where the Chief Justice is chastising his more pious Junior Justice. The pious Junior Justice is on this crusade to shut down the all of the "bawdy houses." He storms one of the more elite houses in an attempt to arrest the owner and finds his boss the Chief Justice mid-coitus with the woman who owns the brothel.

The Chief Justice demonstratively lambasts the junior justice and says something along the lines of "We are to serve justice. We are to the clean the streets of disease and ill decorum. You are to rid the docks of the undesirables and the prostitutes and the criminals. We are to provide law and oder to the society, but what YOU WILL NOT DO IS TAKE OUR WHORES."

And then the pious Junior Justice scurries out with his tail between his legs.

Tl;Dr

Whores of a certain class tended to be respected for their value and were treated well by the men in their circle.

Poor "street walkers" were not. Which again, ties into to my theory that most men care more about a how a woman is perceived more than anything else.

A prostitute is a sex worker, a gold digger is a woman who wants material gains from the male she is dating. Those are two different concepts. You can argue semantics all day, but you can deny the difference no matter how many word games you choose to play.

People who disparage golddiggers are sex negative

Sex negativity refers to the movement of feminism that responded to sex positive feminism, which was born out of anti-pornography feminism and how it made pornography the centre of feminist discourse(which was arguably born out of lesbian feminism). Many feminist figures saw the movement as a greater repression of sexuality, so they detested the anti-pornography feminists. Sex positive feminism focuses on the sexual roles of women and how those sexual roles should never be touched.

Sex negative feminism does not mean that someone hates sex or dislikes other people's sexual preferences or practices, but rather it critisizes sex positive feminists by pointing out how not all sexual practices or roles are immune to criticism. The sex negative feminists were generally against: pornography, sadomasochism and more recently prostitution.

Taking all of this into consideration, sex positive feminism did not stay exactly the same, as it had to change and react to sex negative feminism, and these movements have largely amalgamated themselves into liberal and radical feminism today. Liberal feminists are generally going to be pro-prostitution, supportive of sex workers and logically following that pro sex golddigger, but they make the distinction between coerced or forced sexual arrangements and sexual arrangements. It is entirely possible to hold a sex positive outlook about "golddigging" and still recognize situations in which a woman "golddigging" is doing it out of desperation for money and is being taken advantage of in her awful situation. For example I could be okay with my friend dating a male who buys her luxury items such as expensive bags etc. But at the same time I could be against a single mother only dating a male because she has no other choices or anywhere to go.

It is entirely possible to hold a sex positive outlook about "golddigging" and still recognize situations in which a woman "golddigging" is doing it out of desperation for money and is being taken advantage of in her awful situation.

Yes, when a man is taking advantage of a desperate woman, it is no longer a healthy, consensual relationship. Of course disparaging this dynamic can coexist with sex-pos.

But at the same time I could be against a single mother only dating a male because she has no other choices or anywhere to go.

Why? It's her body to choose. As long the man doesn't mistreat her and their relationship remains healthy, it is sex-neg to disparage her sexual choices.

I don't find her decision poor. It's smart and strategic. It's pretty subjective how "poor" of a decision it is. Based on what you value.

I don't disparage golddiggers. But it's not comparable to prostitution more than it's comparable to what most people would call a "normal" marriage.

Ideally, a "normal" marriage is two people who parter up, they offer each other some life benefit, they are there for each other in various ways that improve each others lives. Sex and money tend to be things people bring to each others lives in these marriages.

That's what a golddigger relationship is, it's just that love isn't one of the things these people offer each other. It tends to be something neither is super interested in, anyway.

Like sex and money, love isn't a hard requirement. Fact is, you can have a happy marriage without sex. You can have a happy marriage without love. You can have a happy marriage without money.

If love is the most important thing to you, a marriage without it might seem like a sham to you. But that would be a failure of empathy on your part. I mean 'you' in the general sense.

No. It's intellectually inconsistent to make moral disctinctions, like your comment about golddiggers being "trashy." Let's address the definition:

Sex-positivity is "an attitude towards human sexuality that regards all consensual sexual activities as fundamentally healthy and pleasurable, encouraging sexual pleasure and experimentation."[1] The sex-positive movement also advocates for comprehensive sex education and safe sex as part of its campaign."[3][1] The movement generally makes no moral distinctions among types of sexual activities, regarding these choices as matters of personal preference.

You can dislike sex before marriage and be sex-pos. But you can't consider girls who have sex before marriage "trashy" and be sex-pos. See the difference? You can dislike sluts and remain sex-pos, but you can't disparage sluts and consider them trashy and be sex-pos.

Furthermore, if your dislike of sluts is due to any moral distinction, you can't be considered sex-pos.

It’s a lot more rare than you’d think. Sugarbabying takes a monumental amount of social energy and charisma, and it doesn’t have the hard “up front” rates escorting does.

I’m saying this as someone that’s done both. As an escort, my clients tended to enjoy the naughty pragmatism of buying sex like it’s take out. No joke, they were big on hi-5’s and toasting with wine from beautiful high rise hotels.

Sugarbabying was more sad. The men were more skittish because they were too shy or embarrassed to have the guts to hire a full-blown escort, so they went with a sugar baby instead to soothe their ego that THEY don’t have to buy a hooker. To a man, at some point in the first conversation, they’d all bring up how much they hate when sugarbabies ask for money, because it ruins the illusion of having a perfect paid-for girlfriend. Because most sugarbabies don’t have set rates, nor do they take a clean single payment up front, there always trying to scramble to get their clients to even freaking pay you. They think buying you a dinner should be enough. And when this is your livelihood, that’s a shitty situation to be in, because you have no power. You’re stuck with the guy for hours as he whimpers about how much he hopes you don’t just like him for his money. When... yes. They are after your money. That’s generally how a person selling a product works.

Maybe I just had poor luck. But sugarbabying always seemed to turn up the faint of heart (in both the men buying and the women selling), for people in denial about engaging in sex work.
