I hate people farting/belching around me too, I think it is gross and I think it is disrespectful to contaminate the common environment with stink when there is the option to go do it elsewhere.
I have never willingly farted in front of my partner (I leave the room), though occassionally one sneaks out (where upon I will apologise).
All of that said; my husband farted in front of me on our first date, and at the time I literally thought "oh god, he's a farter! Am I prepared to date him?" (yes I hate it that much!)
On that day I decided that this man was worth putting up with open farting.
Having made that decision early on I have stuck with it.
The thing is HE doesn't consider it disrespectful, so he is not intending to convey disrespect no matter what I think. I HAVE to take his intentions into account.
I don't shame him or criticise him for farting, I generally don't acknowledge it at all. Occasionally I will make a light comment about 'squeaky floors' or 'stepping on frogs' with a smile, just to show that it is not a big deal without actually setting up a pattern of bursting into applause for a toot.
That said once in a while it is funny; if we are already laughing about something and he laughs so hard he farts, and it sets up a recursive loop.... I mean, that is funny even to me.
Take his intentions into account. He doesn't think it is disgusting or disrespectful AND in your case he actively thinks it is funny. While you might not appreciate his anal knock-knock jokes he isn't intentionally trying to disgust you he is relaxing and joking around with you.
You might prefer a different method but you have a partner who is being playful - if you respond to that angrily, in disgust etc then you will be rebuffing not only the farting but other light hearted playfulness, openess and ease which should be part of a LTR.
You have said it is not a major issue, just an annoyance; so don't MAKE it a big deal.
This falls WELL into the category of 'don't sweat the small stuff' and well into the realm of something you can adjust your attitude about (and that far more easily than you can adjust his behaviour and with more positive consequences).

Do you have kids? I dare you not to laugh the first time one of your babies loudly rips one in public.
It's just a fart. If a man can't fart comfortably in his own home without being shamed and ridiculed, I feel sorry for him.
Thank you for this. It reminded me to check my priss face next time my husband spends forever in the loo. ;)
Edit: My husband watched people come out of my vagina. It's only fair that he can fart whenever he wants.
[–]LibbyCarrots 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Haha, yes! I confess, I'm a recovering priss-pot. Having babies made toilet humor funny to me. I remember once I was feeding my first baby, and I made an important telephone call (to the bank or something) while I was feeding him. So, he was up close to the phone receiver, there was a lull in the conversation, and he LOUDLY let loose. I know the poor bank dude thought it was me, haha. I felt like I couldn't say, "It wasn't me! It was my baby!" :D

Babies farting is hilarious. They are SO little but they can fart SO loud! How is it even possible.
My 4 month old niece looks so pleased with herself after she has a poopsplosion all up her back. It's pretty adorable.

You don't act like a horrible, prissy bitch when your husband farts, that's how you handle it. Are you expecting a lesson in how to get him to feel ashamed of his bodily functions? I don't really think fart jokes are very funny in general either. I don't LIKE to be farted on. It isn't a fun pastime of mine. But I married a human, and sometimes humans have less than pleasant bodily functions. Sometimes your husband will annoy you and do things you think aren't funny. The only options are to deal with it or decide that revealing he is indeed not a robot is a deal breaker and find a new husband.

I will never ever ever have a farting contest, but come on, farts are funny! And so is poop. I mean it's stuff that comes out of your butt how can you do anything but laugh lol

Honestly I think you need to loosen up. Everybody farts, you and I prefer to do it in private but apparently your husband doesn't, who cares? Fake a giggle and move on with your life.
[–]learningred[S] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
I care.
[–]homo_homini_lupus 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
What did you ask us for if you're this rigid about it?
[–]LibbyCarrots 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Right? Nearly every other female-centric space on the internet is going to advise hours and hours of feelings-talks to bully the husband into submission to the wife. You don't get that here!!! WHY do people come looking for that here?!
[–]philomexa 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
about what though? its a bodily function, that EVERYONE has. I mean, you can either interpret it as funny (like your SO), or you can continue to be a priss about it and then wonder why your husband is getting cozy with the girl who laughs at everything he says/does.
suck it up, buttercup.
[–]LibbyCarrots 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I'm wondering if the husband isn't getting a little thrill by sending his priss-pot wife into a huff? My husband tells me HORRIBLE jokes that infuriate me. . .because he likes to rile me up. Even he knows that they're horrible. He literally wouldn't tell them at work or to his friends. He just thinks it's funny to get my goat!
[–]moggymojo 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
This is possible. My husband LOVES to push my buttons just to watch me sputter and fume, then have the fun of proving he can smooth me back down again.
He often says I am his favorite squeaky toy. It is vexing and entertaining.
[–]LibbyCarrots 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Haha, yes, this is our dynamic.
After a really bad one the other day, I shrieked and asked him, "Why, why, why do you say things like that to me?"
"Because I'm [ First Name, Middle Name, Last Name], baby, and I can!" with a grin. By that point I was laughing. Yep, that's my man! :D I'm smiling as I recall it. So cocky!
[–]PhantomDream09 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
My SO finds my reactions entertaining, and this usually translates to him startling me when we're watching a scary movie or something like that. I'm more reactive, and seeing me go through those reactions makes many activities more enjoyable for him. It's never malicious or dismissive and it doesn't bother me.
[–]aZombieKitten 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
My SO does the same! It's taught me that you truly can choose how you react, so I choose to react with laughter and not get angry at him for having fun with things that would normally mildly annoy me.
[–]learningred[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You may not care about sex, you think that people laughing at everything you say or do is a plus.
I want my husband to be sexy, lardcup.
[–]philomexa 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
oh, were going there now are we? honestly, why are you even on RPW? you apparently have a massive stick up your ass not just about potty humor, but about people trying to give you good advice.
I'm just saying, don't come crying to us when you catch your husband texting that funny, cute, easy going girl about what stuck up B you are.
[–]TheTerrorSquadEndorsed Contributor 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You have a terrible attitude. My advice to you is to pull that rod from out your ass and chill the fuck out
[–]aTweetingBird 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm the prudest when it comes to things like that. While I try not to let loose in front of my husband (or anyone), when he cuts one, of course I laugh. But only if he laughs first! Sometimes I just pretend I didn't hear it.
[–]TheTerrorSquadEndorsed Contributor 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
your husband needs to give you a dutch oven.
Lol
[–]homo_homini_lupus 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
A man who has a woman who laughs appreciatively at his farts is a happy man.
[–]learningred[S] 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
Are you joking? Why would I laugh appreciatively at a fart ?
[–]homo_homini_lupus 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Because the more a man is allowed to be a man in his home the happier he will be. If you don't appreciate his humor you are communicating maternal lack of approval and signalling lack of love. It won't kill you
edit: you , however, should not engage in fart and toilet humor, just laugh when he does
[–]learningred[S] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Are you a satire account ?
[–]homo_homini_lupus 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
No, Im not. Im a mod, and an old married woman. Im giving you the correct advice. are YOU a troll?
[–]learningred[S] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
First of all, it's our home.
I do not find farts to be humor, maybe for some it is, not me .You may find belching amusing, I'm fond of satire.
He knew this long before we married. It'not a big problem, but it's annoying.
[–]LifterofThings 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I think you might want to relent on the pearl-clutching. Think it may be depriving your brain of oxygen...
[–]learningred[S] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Why is it so hard to understand the fact that I hate farting, belching..etc? I find no humour in that.
[–]little_red_ 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You're allowed to hate whatever you want, but we don't condone demanding your man hold his farts in because you think its icky. Get over yourself.
[–]HappyWifeLife 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
this
[–]eatplaycrushEndorsed Contributor 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you hated it that much you shouldn't have married him and you should have let him find a girl who would laugh at his farts or just ignore them as if nothing even happened. Man, some men deal with a lot of crap... No pun intended.
[–]crazyex 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There are several things he hates that you do, but he respects you enough to realize those things are part of who you are, and part of who he vowed to stay with for the rest of his poor, miserable, fart-holding-in-for-his-humorless-wife life, so he accepts your failings and weaknesses and doesn't post advice threads asking how to make you "get" that he doesn't like those things. All while not being a dick about you being a bitch about a human bodily function.
[–]gabilromariz 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm keeping this in my "cheer up" files, along with some silly kitten pictures :)
It reminds me of one time when my bf made a gun with his hands at me and I was just preplexed, what is this, what's he doing? He farted and pretended to shoot me. i know it's silly but I acted like I'd been shot and fell off the sofa. We both laughed until our sides hurt.
Thanks for the reminder :)
[–]ACityGirl 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
A stupid question.
I think you answered it yourself.
I originally thought, "There are no stupid questions! Especially when people are just trying to figure things out!"
But your attitude has made that platitude false; you didn't come here for answers, you came here to...what? Have people say it's okay to be rude?
I hope you can find peace. In order to do that, you have to rid yourself of that anger in your heart.
EDIT: I apologize. I do think what I said was true, but I think you might have really come to this sub because you are trying, and I implied that you are not at all. It will take time and effort, but you really can take a step back and not sweat the small stuff. Care for your family. Have a happy marriage.
[–]PhantomDream09 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
How long have you been married/how long did you date? Humor isn't usually something that suddenly comes out of nowhere, so either you were fine ignoring this until now or he hid it from you until recently (?).
[–][deleted] 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
[–]HappySnowGirl 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It was always on my no list.
How can you forbid gas? Is he allowed to poop?
[–]PhantomDream09 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
So does that mean he "avoided" humor like this? What does he do? Or is it that he watches shows that bother you? What do you think you can do? You don't give examples, or explain frequency - so this could be an occasional off the wall remark 5 times a week, or "he listens to fart tracks all day instead of music." Without more to go on, it's hard to say whether you're being too sensitive or if he's being excessive in his humorous pursuits.
He just thinks it's okey now. Married for 5 years, it bugs me so much.
This is vague. He's been doing this since you got married (five years) or did this start more recently?
It may have always been on your 'no' list - but did you tell him this? My SO knows I am extremely squeamish about certain things (cartoon puke on shows like "Family Guy" are enough to make me look away), and he knows that.
[–]BakerofpieEndorsed Contributor 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This made me snort-laugh. The OP seems pretty trolly, but boy if this isn't an entertaining thread.
Not a matter of tv shows. There is nothing I can do, because it is not my doing. He just feels that we have reached a point at which we should be extremely okey with stuff like this.I feel we should never reach that point.
[–]PhantomDream09 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You still haven't said what he does or how often. What part of examples and frequency is hard to understand?
On another note, do not snark at HHH, or anyone else. This is your last and only warning.
[–]learningred[S] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I haven't taken notes, it's just farting..and expecting me to find it funny. All of a sudden, after I made it clear that toilet humour will never be funny.
And sorry, if someone is snarky, I will respond in the same manner.
[–]PhantomDream09 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Telling you to lighten up isn't snark - it's good advice. Even the way you interact on this thread is enough to get multiple users to dislike your 'stuck up' attitude.
Just relax and learn not to be so serious. You have zero reason to be upset at all if it's as infrequent as you say. Also "I haven't taken notes" falls under 'snark' so, you can go flounce somewhere else.
Goodbye.
[–]my-redpillthrowaway 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I wouldn't worry about it unless he rips out some stinky farts.
Hilarious thread though :D
[–]wibblezibble 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I've heard of people who have never farted in front of their spouse and never heard their spouse fart. This concept is just bizarre to me.
It's a normal, healthy function of your body. There are absolutely times when you shouldn't fart, but I can't imagine a life where I would be unable to fart in the comfort of my home.
[–]Bea_Noemi 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm there with you, OP. My SO and I agreed that we don't include the other in any toilet habits (I believe for me it degrades the intimacy in my relationship) and I have asked that he not intentionally pass gas in front of me. If he hadn't agreed to that I wouldn't have thought too much of it, but it is my preference and he did agree.
[–]MeowZedong- 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think you should remove the stick from your butt so you can toot. Then have a nice laugh over it.
[–]stillnoturday 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Guy here, just tell him that it isn't funny. However realize it is a natural bodily function and will happen. Doesn't mean he can dutch oven you or stuff like that.
[–]Cooking_And_Cats 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
My SO literally never farts or burps. It's the weirdest thing. I on the other hand have my share of bodily functions. I really think it's related to diet as he always ate cleaner then me and now that I've begun to eat clean my occurrences are going wayyy down. He was always pretty understanding about it but it was always mortifying for me. Maybe try to switch up your meals? Try reducing/eliminating dairy, red meat, beans, or experiment to figure out what it is as everyone's body is different. As for the actual humor part I don't know what to tell you expect that men are like that. In fact my SO found my bodily functions to be hilarious when I hatedddd it!
[–]eatplaycrushEndorsed Contributor 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Is this even real? Do you act completely disgusted when you fart? 10/10 would bet you don't.
Hate to break it to you, but bodily functions are natural. Be concerned over things like Ebola, not farts.
[–]ALadyLikeMe 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I say "Bless you!" same as when he sneezes.
And your SO farts are much better than anyone else's farts. A girlfriend and her boyfriend were recently visiting and slept on our pull out couch. I was in the kitchen and I heard the dude fart in his sleep and I was SO GROSSED OUT! But I realized that I am actually not so grossed out by my SO's farts in comparison (well except for if they're reeeally stinky!)
[–]aZombieKitten -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
My SO farts and then proceeds to laugh the second I saw "ew" or "stinky." He's such a gassy man no matter what he eats, so I've learned to laugh at it rather than acting like it's disgusting. Now, I may leave the vicinity if it smells horrible, but I'm not going to get mad at him over it.
You need to learn to have a little humor and not be so serious about something everyone does. Don't be so prissy.
