Hi All,

Have been thinking more about the subject of being in "proposal territory" in relationships, and am curious how those of you who are engaged and/or married went through this when you did.

SO and I have been dating almost 2 years, he brought up marriage last January, took me ring shopping in February, and continued to drop massive hints, one of them being that he wants to ask my parents when we go home (across the country) for a wedding in July. I want to re-state that none of these conversations - INCLUDING THE RING SHOPPING - were my idea or anything close to an ultimatum. He has been in the driver seat with this, 100% of the way.

I've never brought the subject up, except when he has, to let him know I am 100% on board, and we briefly talked about how we would want our marriage / relationship to be run (we are both of the RP mindset, by the way). Also, we discussed where to purchase a house, etc. Anyway, the pieces are all moving in that direction. Point being, I am not at all luke warm about it, and he knows I can't wait.

Lately, though, he has gone...quiet....On the subject. No more silly hints, no more questions about X (anything future related) and its just sort of confusing to me. It doesn't really worry me, because we are 100% great right now, but at the same time I haven't forgotten that he said he wants to propose. It has me wondering, well, when?

Sure, sure, it could be a sign that he has something up his sleeve, but at the same time, I dont want to wake up every day secretly hoping for a proposal and then being disappointed. Its HARD to not think about it, but I want to put it out of my mind because I feel like a 4 year old asking mom and dad when christmas is. At the same time, if he has changed his mind and doesn't feel that way anymore (although, nothing has changed in our relationship), I would like to know.

I think my fear, deep down, is that I am going to be strung along like so many women sometimes are with the idea of an illusive proposal and/or ring that never comes. I don't want to con anyone into a marriage they don't want to be in, but I also don't want to be in a relationship for 3+ years with no commitment in sight. I feel like I am walking a fine line of blind trust that he is going to do what he has said / indicated he is going to do, and afraid of being taken for granted / taken advantage of.

For the married / engaged ladies here, how long did you wait between discussing marriage (if you discussed it) and actually receiving a proposal?

How long should someone be patient for something like this before theres a good chance that something changed?

Any tips for enjoying the interim? I am in no hurry to plan a big wedding and/or party (we actually plan to elope) but the anticipation and invisible dangling carrot is nothing short of mental torture, since I suppose there is always a chance that it won't happen.

xo, happy sunday!

TL;DR: I'm inside my head about this whole pending proposal thing. Trying to stay logical about it, looking for some words of wisdom from women who have been in my shoes, and how to stay patient and graceful in the mean time :)
