These people need to give it a rest. A friend of mine became transgendered and suddenly took on the "victim of rape culture" paradigm. To be able to afford that in the first place is "white male priviledge" but now he's a lady so he has obviously gained the right to hate what he used to be. The psychology behind the introduction of "cis" terminology is pretty simple: if you give a technical name to trans* individuals and not one to everyone else, the implication is that being transsexual is different, defective. And we don't want to hurt feelings. So instead of categorizing people as "normal" and "not normal," SJWs mask their contempt for the everyperson by hiding behind unwieldy labels.

There's no reason to pay attention to cis, trans, and all those other bullshit women's studies terms, unless you're wasting time on SRS/tumblr. And if so, self-mutilation might be a better use of your time.

I've only met a couple of people in the real world who actually used those terms, and ended conversations with both quickly. (Both college students I wanted to date until they started talking.)

If you make a distinction between sex and gender, then I don't want to date someone who's gender is female, I want to date someone who's sex is female. It's kind of like how heterosexual people get labelled "straight" instead of "normal". Calling a cisgender person "normal" implies that a transgender person is "abnormal" or "broken", and that has unpleasant connotations.

You don't have to feel like someone's applying "cis" to you without your permission, as it really only gets applied in situations where the discussion includes trans people and "cis" gets applied to differentiate those who identify with the gender the doctor picked when they were born.

I think people should just be free to be whatever they understand to be natural for them, and drop all the complicated terminology. Its not helpful to the overall debate, and i feel like it further divides us as a community.

I think some of the people in this thread need to calm their tits. Humans invent words to describe the world. We then invent more words to more accurately describe the world. We then invent EVEN MORE words to describe the world in painful detail. It's what humanity has always done.

Generally, words/names referring to the minutiae of a topic will only be used within the group of people actually interested in that topic. Eventually, it will diffuse to the general public. It's a normal process. There is no need to get all pissy.

For instance, this is a list of types of chairs we have names for. It isnt even exhaustive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_chairs

No one gets pissy because there are technical/specific names for different kinds of chairs. No one rages because the most common type of chair isn't called a "normal" chair. As far as cis and trans are concerned, I see no reason why you need to be angry that more precise words exist. Why shouldn't precise words exist to describe nature? What benefit is had by maintaining or enforcing imprecise language?

An argument could be made that the people most in favor of cis and trans generally like to misrepresent the situation, as though cis and trans were equally occurring in society, and that is ridiculous. But don't act like a shitty position on that issue is a reason to get rid of accurate descriptive words.
