Muay Thai and BJJ.

In my experience these are the 2 best types of gyms that are away from the "mcdojo" craze and offer the best "real" fight self defense.

A good bjj gym will obviously have a couple black belt trainers and its quiet easy to find out who they got their belt from so you can establish a pedigree of sorts. Muay thai gyms will have guys fighting amateur and pro fights, look out for local shows and posters, talk to the fighters get gym names etc or google. It's quite easy.

Being in a ring and on a mat is one thing but a street fight is completely different. I have a blue belt in bjj, had numerous amateur muay thai fights and been in 1 too many street fights in my wilder days.Yes my training gave me an advantage and I am alot better off than had I not trained but I'd highly recommend not getting involved unless it's a direct threat as anything can happen. I've seen ears bitten off, guys glassed etc. Its not worth it.

Defending yourself is about warding off aggression. Lift so you aren't a manlet and don't put yourself in compromising positions and you'll likely never have to lift a finger to defend yourself. This will also serve to defend those who are immediately close to you (e.g. a girl walking with you down the street).

Defending others - which is what you want to do - is different. But generally on yelp you can get a sense for what type of gym a fighting gym is. Look to see who's making the comments and check the website. It isn't that hard.

But don't be dumb. Knowing how to fight doesn't make you invincible.

Hi all, my first post on this sub. Thanks to all the contributors, you helped me be a better person.

Fist read Facing Violence book.
It has lots of valuable information about recognizing patterns that lead to violence, how to avoid it, legal repercussions, about fight itself and aftermath. Really cool book.

And find some MMA gym. I'm 34 years old, I started when I was about 27. Even with 6 months of training you'll be light years ahead of "civilians". It's fun as fuck, it could be useful and works wonders with self esteem.

Self Defense is not fighting. Self defense is as much about prevention/de-escalation than about physical acts. Rather make it very hard for burglars to break into your house than to train fighting burglars in your bedroom.

So, don't get involved in crime, don't get too drunk in seedy bars, don't flash cash/jewelry in bad parts of town or in poor countries, stay away from the aggresive drunk SOB. If you fight, you can go to the hospital or end up dead. If you fight and win, you might go to jail. Don't carry weapons you're not 100% prepared to use. You don't want to be the sucker bringing his own murder weapon. Also, you don't want to go to jail for manslaughter.

So have an egoless conversation with yourself when you are going to get physical and how far you want to take it. And be prepared to suffer the consequences. You want all that shit out of your head when you do get physical.

There are situations when you can't run or when you're with loved ones who can't run. If so, knocking or choking your attacker(s) out is your main goal. Go 100% for that. Weapons work. If you can get your hands on anything, use it (pool cue e.g.). Fighting against knives/gun is a nightmare.

Lift to get physically strong, take care of your cardio. No matter how much technique you've got, without strength and air in your lungs you can't execute them.

Learn a martial art. Any martial arts has its good points and its weak points and you have good gyms and bad gyms in any. Most are also focussed on sports, not on pure self defense. So try out a few, see if they're serious and if you like what they o and have fun. Martial arts are great just to learn. Pick one that's physically demandig. Pick two if you can. - Boxing: very good for punching and strength/cardio, weak on everything else. - kickboxing/thai boxing: similar to boxing but with kicks. - karate: depends on the style and gym. Some are really good, some very bad. - taekwando: not a fan of, too much point kicking - judo/wrestling: you'll get in very good shape, but not very good self defense wise. But awesome if combined with some striking. - BJJ: very good on the ground, but they tend to go to the ground no matter what and you don't want that in self defense. - MMA: very good. But try to pick those techniques that are not sports oriented (as in any martial art). Don't go diving for kneebars. - krav maga: the one I saw, was shit. Very bad technique. - Any gym where you see a 12 year old black belt: run.

I think that learning a martial art is one of the more important components of becoming alpha.

You can lift all you want and for a lot of guys that will be enough to scare them off, but deep down you know you don't know how to fight and if you've never been in a fight then you aren't tested. That will strike at your confidence in ways you probably can't see but others can.

I highly recommended learning a martial art as part of your fitness schedule. Jiu Jitsu, Roman Greco Wrestling, Boxing, etc. can all change the way you approach the world and those awkward situations where someone wants to push you around because they don't know how to project dominance any other way.

Having this knowledge will do more to prevent fights than it will to help you win fights. And it will do a lot to help you win fights.

As others have stated BJJ and Muay Thai are best for self defense and are available in most areas. The number one best defense is self control and avoiding the violence. Very odd things happen in fights. You can easily be killed or severely handicapped as a result. BJJ and MT will give you a serious boost of confidence too.

You can find a good BJJ and MT studio on Google. If you go to the MT club and see blood stains on the canvas you are in a good place.

Personally I was in a situation last night. Maintained composure and chose to walk away. Mob mentality was taking over and I was on the bad end of the mob. I didn't apologize for what I didn't do. I simply cashed out my tab and walked out of the bar. As I left someone was running up behind me I turned ready to defend myself. Thankfully he ran right passed me.

5 years ago would have been a different story.

Maintaining my composure kept me out of jail, saved me money on legal, hospital bills, didn't jeopardize my current or future employment, I gave my ex nothing to use against me in court and quite possibly saved my life. I also got to go home and sleep in my bed peacefully and wake up hung over in my home and relax on my couch for the day.

It's not worth it if you can avoid it.

Are you looking to defend yourself or just looking to get out some aggression or what? ANY self defense technique that doesn't focus on deescalating the situation and end with "then escape as soon as possible and contact the police" is going to be bullshit. There is no self defense school out there that can protect you from multiple aggressors. Boxing might get you out of the situation if you're able to one punch KO guys like this, but anything else, as soon as you go to the ground you're dead.

They'll teach you some intricate moves that you'll practice in slow motion a few times with some chubby middle aged woman in the gym, and suddenly you think you can handle a real fight? Watch the first minute of this to see the Practice v Reality when it comes to fighting. Real fights are chaotic and intense and fucking brutal.

Honestly a lot of it is also down to attitude, the fact you didn't step in was probably because you were also scared of getting hurt, set aside your pride and be prepared to take a few hits when it comes down to it to protect a fellow human, at first just try to pull them off and calm them down or keep them in a choke to prevent them from fighting any further, there's a few simple chokes you can learn to keep someone in control, just keep your limits in mind, don't go head on fighting 6 guys

Realistically, the best skill to have in a real life fight is short-distance sprinting. Run. ESPECIALLY if your potential opponent is or may be armed with any sort of a weapon.

The situation described in the original post? The correct response is call the police and let them sort it out. It is not your problem. It wasn't the first drunk fight to happen at that location and it won't be the last.

Training is good, sign up for some form of martial art or boxing. I grew up boxing because my family did in the military. Now I've transitioned to jiu-jitsu and just hit mits and practice a little kickboxing. It's good to get your aggressions out. But it's even better knowing you can handle yourself and people around you. On top of all that you'll realize how much slower and sloppier people are when they fight and you see a lot of openings to be hit. That being said I'm way less likely to start a fight let alone get involved in one unless it's absolutely necessary.

TLDR: Go train, hit some mits, choke some people out. It feels good and you're likely to be less aggressive. Plus it's fun way to sweat.

I've never been in a real fight, so take this with a grain of salt, but then again I've been escalated on a few times and avoided a fight without ever "backing down" so I might not be entirely talking out of my ass...

I've had a few guys try to pick fights with me lately, and each time it was not necessarily a fight they were looking for. They were in that spot everyone is in at least once in their lives: feeling powerless and full of rage, looking for someone else with a lot of rage to feed theirs in return and give them an excuse to open the floodgates. That shit comes from a position of insecurity. Respond to them, meet their challenge, but don't fall into his frame... don't feed his rage with more rage, don't belittle him and feed his insecurity. Don't back down, but refuse to fight, calmly.

Also watch out for fighting advice from guys who are full of anger and are just using "self defence training" as sharpening their sticks, waiting for someone to warrant using them on. They're the kind of guys who are hoping someone will confront them. It also comes from a place of insecurity. Honestly this is what got me into martial arts in the first place.

I study an old-school martial art. It's extremely, vocally opposed to McDojos but is also not designed to be the first line of defence in an actual fight. It's not useless if it comes to that, it just isn't designed for it. It's honestly more of an exercise in frame control and calmness than physicality. I can vouch for it from a personal development standpoint but not from an actual combat perspective, since I've never used it.

Obviously does not apply to muggings and so forth. That stuff is impersonal, they will only get into fights they know they can win (outnumbered, against drunk guys, etc) so the best advice is run. I feel like they'd rather wait for an easy victim than put effort into chasing you down. (TRP side-note: was this paragraph socially acceptable? Imagine if it was rape prevention advice, I'd be crucified.)

You're in luck, because almost every martial arts school or dojo offers the first class for free. You should make a list of 4 or 5 and just try them each once. You'll figure out what you like and don't like, and can make a decision.

I have my biases, but I would recommend a martial art that at least has some focus on modern weapons.

When I was 17 I got into a fight, and my opponent pulled a knife and opened up my arm. I found myself in a similar situation that you are in. I tried out 6 different schools (Manchester NH) and found one that I stuck with for 12 years. I feel confident in any physical confrontation now. Here are my two cents:

You should feel like your instructor can kick your ass, and everyone else's ass. He won't brag about it, but you will feel it when he's choking you out.
Try to avoid sporting martial arts. Results may very but in my experience, MMA, Tae Kwon Do, and Karate schools often train for competitions, (1 v 1 fair fights in a ring). This is good to do if you are interested in winning fair fights in a ring. When you train, train to fight 3 adult men that have knives and bats and guns. Train like you are protecting your women and children and the winner takes all, because that's the fight you must not lose.
I suggest looking for a Krav Maga, or Philipino martial arts school (Kali, Escrima etc...) for a primary skill set to master. Some solid Jiu Jitsu skills are comforting to have as well.
I am a big guy (6'4, 260). I dipped into Aikido to learn how to lock ,throw and control my opponent better (You can win a fight without injuring your opponent or leaving marks), Tai Chi to learn breathing and to lower my center of gravity (I couldn't throw anyone smaller than me without strong arming them) and Boxing for toughness, footwork and hand speed.
You can win 90% of physical confrontations in America by attitude and posture alone. Read Hagakure: The book of the samurai . No one picks a fight with a quiet, confident man that shows no fear when threatened, and looks pleased at the prospect of fighting.

There's some hate on for Krav from the sport fighting world, mainly because it's not a sport. Look up the rules for MMA, break all of them, and you get Krav. (elbows: check, gouges: check, joint locks: check, pressure points: check, kidney and groin hits: check, weapons: check)

MMA is good for getting fit and experience with getting knocked down and what it feels like to get hit hard in a fight. The submission stuff in BJJ could be useful for ending a fight (only known people who did it), but I wouldn't feel confident using it against a crackhead or an abduction attempt. Krav is about avoiding, surviving and escaping. It's really not a sport.

Find a good Krav Maga gym around your area. Hell, find a good Boxing gym too and train both, but Krav is great for its efficency/effectiveness and ease to learn for novices. Make sure that your trainer and the gym is legit however as there tends to be a lot of Mcdojos for this discipline. The only reason I would be wary of boxing is your head is going to get smacked up a lot (and your going to need that later on I would think!).

Just to add on, boxing is great for actually fighting, whereas Krav is much more about disengaging/escaping holds/being attacked by multiple targets and ensuring that you get away safely (with a good measure of groin kicks and eye gouges), which is why learning both would be a great idea and give you a great base to start with.

A lot of posters recommend staying out of it if it's not an immediate threat. That is sound advice. If you can't avoid a fight, learning Muay Thai, boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or Judo would be practical options.

If you're really worried about defending yourself in truly life threatening situations, you're better off getting a gun and a concealed carry permit. Make sure you know how to effectively use your weapon and be prepared to pull the trigger if the situation warrants it. Make sure you know the laws of your jurisdiction regarding self defense.

As others said, the risk/reward ratio of engaging in violent confrontation is awful. It's best to avoid violence whenever possible even if someone was way out of line.

Look for a gym that practices real world applicable fighting styles. Not one for competition. Gyms that train in Krav Maga, Fillipino Kali and such. I've been training for 5 years and I went from competition fighting to "street fighting" applicable martial arts and it is a completely different world. They will teach you to control situations and how to quickly finish engagements, plus they should teach you how to make sure you do it without breaking the law. Plus boxing is always a great base and skill to have.

Also if you want to get started in your backyard with a few friends. Check out fightsmart.com the instructor trav has some great free videos to get you started. Train with a buddy, train slow and with correct form. It will give you somewhat of a start but nothing beats those hours spent in the gym training with other fighters and sparring.

Doing martial arts so that you can "fight those guys off" is a bad mindset. Street fighting is dangerous and should be avoided.

My main advice would be to not engage or escalate if guys want to start something with you. If neccesary, play the wimp card. These guys will try to provoke a fight, but they will rarely fight you if you don't engage.

Edit: If you want to actually win a fight, bring a knife or a gun. If you aren't willing to stab or shoot someone, then the fight isn't important enough for you to engage in.

If two drunk pussies jump you, then rolling on the ground and trying to throw arm bars or muay thai kick someone or some other joke martial art is not going to work. Instead learn to survive and end conflicts as quick as possible. Learn to punch/stab throats, use elbows, break small joins, fingers, and knees. Learn to fish hook, gouge eyes, pressure points (hit someone in the solar plexus with a quick jab and they are going down without breathing for at least 30 seconds, enough time to calmly walk away). Whatever you need to do. Also show no weakness. Beta bitches like that are sniffing for weakness. There is no mercy or honour in defending yourself from two wastes jumping you.

Also be smart about your surroundings. When I lived in a big city and had to walk a section of town where muggings were occuring I kept a hammer in hand (hidden in my coat) and walked on the bike path of the street, never the sidewalk. Point being always be aware of your surroundings.

Wrestling will give you the simplest set of skills in a street fight dollar-for-dollar. The first few seconds can be decided by who gets whom on the ground. Boxing is also good.

But don't join a fight that's not yours. Some third friend of theirs, just around the corner who you can't see, could have a knife or gun. I am not exaggerating.

Aside from that, are you propared to take two, three, four guys out? At a bar, a dude is usually there with his friend, and probably a few more. Also, bars have stools, chairs and other things that can be used as fighting instruments. Outside, there's all kinds of stuff. I saw an ulucky guy get jumped and a full outdoor garbage can thrown on his head after being wrestled to the ground. Are you ready for that?

Know what? I've been in hundreds of fights, honestly hundreds, I can hold my own and end altercations in seconds, usually without hitting anyone, thanks to seven years of wrestling, military training, combat exp, and all those fucking useless fights people started with me over the last 40 years.

I will not stop a fight unless its kids ganging up on one or bullying shit, usually you only need to yell at them. If you're an adult, you're on your own pal. I'm not going to pay the medical bills of some drunk I fucked up because he started shit with someone else. I'm not getting stabbed again, and I'd rather not be shot by breaking shit up. I'm not getting arrested because the state decides that a war vet was the primary aggressor by default, or because they punish everyone for fighting.

Fuck that shit. I am not going to be your hero and save your ass in a fist fight. Start shit with me and persist, and you just fucked with the wrong man, but I'm not looking for another fight, I have no manhood to prove, and it doesn't impress the girls...Even if it did, fuck that shit.

In a two on one situation like that you wanna get as hard of it hit on the bigger person to knock them out while they don't realize you're there, then quickly deal with the smaller guy with a hard open hand strike to the jaw or punch to the stomach followed by a hard blow to the head.

Alright Man, here is my 2 cents. Every new century M.M.A. gym is going to be "designed for soccer Moms" That's 95% of their clientele . They need to pay their fucking rent. Here is the good part, as the sun falls they cater to another type of clients. The ones that really want to make it in the MM.A. That's how M.M.A. gyms make the real money, by making legit fighters (%5 of the clientele). So go check out a big nice MMA gym and ask them if they have smaller classes, the real deal. The smaller class is usually 15-20 people but most of the time 3-8 people will show up. This is a great time to get one-on-one without paying for one-on-one $$$.

Now if you really want to find a grimy-ass "Sweat blood and tears" gym. Look for public boxing gyms. This is were the guys that are trying to get out of the hood go. I went to one of those and that's where I was "discovered". It will be old, nasty, smell like throw-up, the restroom will be all fucked up, and you will love it. You might not learn as fast, but you will make comrades, you will meet some bad tough motherfuckers, and you will toughen up.

I know how to fight, I always knew. Some people are just born mean, its part of the tribal structure. However I wasn't big, I didn't want to have to fight, I would rather not have to fight. Its a real bitch when your hands are register as "deadly weapons". So I stared lifting and gained a lot of muscle. I haven't had to fight, but its good to know that if shit goes down, you can take care of it.

You can learn to fight without having to be shredded, but every experienced fighter will tell you it's always best to avoid a fight.
The thing about working out, however, is that it not only gives you more strength needed to fare better in a fight if it comes down to it, but people are less likely to start a fight with you if they see that you LOOK like you can handle yourself.
Search up some training dojos nearby, because there is a huge difference between being strong and knowing how to fight.

Only systems like Aikido, traditional (ko ryu) jiu jitsu, Escrima, ect. qualify for self defense.

F.i. Muay Thai is great for unarmed and winning competitions, but not so great when a man with a knife, another with a baseball bat and yet another with a chain attack you. Same with Judo and BJJ.

Weapon arts is where it's at.

My background is some training (boxing, combat/military self defense and bjj) and some fights (boxing ring, hockey and street). I work in the criminal justice profession and have participated in cases where bar/street fights have resulted in serious injury or death.

My observations on a few points:

(1) GUNS - carrying and using a gun in an altercation escalates things to fatality level immediately. Either you (if the gun is taken/wrestled from you) or your opponent is likely to die. That means possible charges and jail if authorities deem your use of force inappropriate. Keep in mind you have no control over what witnesses will say and how the police will view things. To me, there are far too many negative aspects of using a gun in an altercation.

(2) STYLE - picking a style of martial art or self defence system is not as huge as sinply having some training under your belt. However, you need a few basic skills. You need to learn how to punch properly (boxing) for striking power and to avoid breaking your hands. Basic chokes/holds (bjj) are essential for ground. Weapon defense (krav, www.scars.com or military) against guns (this is another reason why I don't favor CC a gun as a solution - a trained operator can disarm a civilian easily), knives or striking objects is the final necessity.

(3) LIFT - I lift and it is great for fitness, confidence and health. However, it does very little for you in a street fight compared to martial arts/self defence. I do not think it helps you avoid fights either as some idiots purposely will challenge you to enhance their street fighting cred. I have seen many unimpressive looking guys beat the fuck out of bodybuilder types in the gym and out on the street.

(4) AVOID/DEESCALATE - use any and all methods to avoid a street fight. You do not know what your opponent's background is, what drugs they may be on or where their friends are and what they will do. Plus, luck and intangibles play a significant role. Lastly, humans are fragile. You can be maimed or killed or do the same to your opponent with a seemingly innocuous push or blow (fall to ground > strike head > sub dural hemotoma).

Bottom line: if you have no alternative but to fight, strike quickly with maximum force. Most street fights are done in under 30 seconds. You will not receive any points for style. Watch for intervention or retaliation from your opponent's friends. Retreat to safety as soon as you can. Secure witnesses if Police have been called. Go to hospital if you receive any injury to the head (concussion) or torso that are painful on palpation (internal bleeding).

The best way to defend yourself can be summarized in 3 things

1) Be in great shape

2) Be situationally aware

3) Learn a martial art.

IT has nothing to do with confidence - as you could be a door mouse but if you have the three things mastered above, you can easily defend yourself.

I prefer aikido as its great for defense and offense, but because your hands are not considered weapons under the law (vs. other martial arts in which they are), it minimizes the legal risk as well.

I'm no stranger to violence and haven't seen a smooth white knight operator dispatch threats & dispense justice yet.

Fight outcomes have little to do with how good you are in comparison to weapons and number of people involved.

Think of it this way, having no experience vs 3 years of experience in BJJ will only make a difference in a 1 on 1.

But how many fights you end up getting into do you really think will end up 1 on 1 and without weapons?

Also, if you're a civilian, police are unlikely to let your intervention, no matter how justified, go uncharged.

Forget karate, judo or all of those martial arts. They are called arts for a reason. Sure they give you some advantage but they mostly teach you how to fight other people that know those specific martial arts.
For street fighting find an MMA gym, it should combine the best of everything.
And don't forget to lift, get huge so people won't even dare to start a fight with you, this way you'll win without even fighting.
