I think I should feel forced at first. Look at it as learning how to drive, at first driving is a bunch of conscious decisions but eventually becomes second nature. Sure, kids that grew up around dad's who were petrolheads tend to have a natural feel for driving since thier exposure to it was longer. I think charisma works on the same bases since it- in my opinion- is a learned attribute.

Is wit or being witty also a learned attribute?
[–]seeronki 34 points35 points36 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I think so. If you participate in banter with friends you tend to learn to respond to statements because at some point you've someone else respond to a statement in a certain way. I think all forms of social interactions are learned from social interactions. If consciousness is a collection of experiences, then everything is learned rather than an innate. If you look at sociopaths and psychopaths they tend to be one of the most charismatic and witty people and they are this way because it works and they had to learn it because if it was inborn they wouldnt be able to "switch on/off" this ability.
[–]ajayt365 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Yeah I also believe this. It's just that when I was a kid, high schooler I used to interact with lot of people of both sexes. But when I went to college, I had not many girls around me and became shy. Now I can talk to women in real world, not great at it but it's just my mind says that "you're not good enough". I mean it's not google where it's all logical and you'll have to learn certain things, work within systems to crack it.
I also read this line from somewhere "It doesn't matter how you much try to become good enough, if you keep assuming you're not good enough". I mean sometimes a man has to admit he's not good at something and he has to improve if he wants it. A man has to accept his flaws and work on himself. To become better and better.
[–]seeronki 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Actually, there is logic to "I am not good enough" studies show that testosterone in men governs their "feel good". Studies show that talking to women increases testosterone. Studies also show working out increases testosterone. So, depending on the route you take you will get better, be it talking to women or working out. Eventually, you won't feel the "I am not good enough". You need testosterone to feel good about yourself enough to talk to women and talking to women increases testosterone. One could look at it like " I need a job to get experience and I need experience to get a job" but there understand that you don't need experience to talk to women you need experience to get good at talking to women. At first you will not succeed but in light of all I've said eventually you will get really good at it.
[–]ajayt365 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Umm isn't your self esteem low if you feel good after talking to women? I mean I should be able to have that charisma in any situation.
[–]seeronki 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It translates self-esteem isn't locked to women
[–]ajayt365 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah. It shouldn't be as well. Also many people don't workout and they feel good about themselves and talk to women. But yeah working out can give that appearance edge over somebody who doesn't work out. I guess you need something going on in your life to feel good and confident about yourself.

You can learn some forms of humor, and through practice become somewhat entertaining, but real funny is born of childhood pain and trauma. I don’t recommend.
[–]TripleZeroh 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
All social interaction is a learned attribute. Look up the studies on feral children. They completely miss the development window in young childhood for developing basic social skills and have great difficulty in acculturating themselves in society even as adults. Thankfully as long as you have developed basic social skills you can refine them, which would include being witty, but it's nonetheless a learned behavior.
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah this is spot on.
Conversation/social skills/charisma is a skill like anything else that is learned. We just grow up thinking that we're either born with it or not, when it's the complete opposite case. The only reason there are naturally charismatic people is because their parents and role models are charismatic, so they learned from a young age how to model that behavior.
[–]theosamabahama 21 points22 points23 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Don't try to be charismatic. Try to be laid back. Do what you feel like doing and don't give a fuck what others think or even what the girl thinks. You can still talk to her like normal and show interest. You don't need to be extrovert and energetic. Just be chill.
[–]Pariente99 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Best advice right here. As long as you look and feel comfortable and have things to talk about you should be fine.
[–]Endisnear77 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This, listen to him
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
But what if my being chill is boring?
[–]theosamabahama 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Two questions for you:
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Sometimes yeah, like I feel like I can be kind of left out occasionally when we’re all kicking it or I lose my spot in the light
[–]theosamabahama 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That might just be up in your head. But anyway, the more you stress about it, the more insecure and therefore, the more unattractive, you will become.
But if you feel like this around your friends, then maybe this is a deeper issue for you beyond just girls.

Yup, as with literally everything you want to be good at in life. You don't get proficient at something by not practicing it and you can't practice it by not doing it.
[–]vardarac 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I mean, kind of?
Think of a pie chart for every moment in an interaction; every choice from body position to the words used to the level of eye contact and voice tonality.
90-95% of the possible decisions your brain could make in a conversation might be wrong/bad if you are aiming for a certain outcome.
Pick a random direction on the pie chart. This is what a newbie does. They will overwhelmingly miss the sliver of "good" decisions and may fail to improve/give up if they don't even know what they don't know.
If all you do is fail in random directions consistently that doesn't help. Some form of guidance and direct feedback is necessary for some of us.

Sure, you need feedback. But from OPs post he obviously understands HOW to be charismatic but says it makes him feel miserable.
My comment was basically "Welcome to life."
You have to put up fake fronts to make your way through certain situations if you want to see a specific outcome. Once you've positioned yourself near what your intended outcome was, you can start unwinding a bit. But not every person is going to immediately like your 100% genuine self upon first impressions. If you want someone to like you, then you have to appeal to them until they accept you. Period. No matter how uncomfortable it makes you during the process.
[–]GhoulChaser 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Just hold a conversation, hold strong eye contact like you wanna smash and smile/ smirk a lot and if something sounds funny from the person laugh and that will make you more likable and charismatic.
[–]nancypancy91 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well said i agree with the first response , charisma is a learned skill. I’m a super introvert and I can listen to people talk all day and not say a thing. Luckily I’ve had friends that let me feel safe speaking my mind opinions in a fun way. For instance when you find a subject /topic you like to talk about I feel like you could naturally show qualities of being charismatic. Starting conversation can feel a bit forced and cringey but I find that most people like to open up :)

Fake it until you make it. If you talk, look like, and conduct yourself as a charismatic person eventually you will feel like one. Once you are feeling it, it all comes together and becomes genuine.
Not to sound like a broken record, but hobbies and interests that you can get really into and really pumped about will do the trick, and u need to give everything u do everything you got. You aint working at the gym, you are hardcore shredding the gym. You ain't strumming the guitar, you are murdering it. You ain't playing the game, you're slaying it. Serious effort put into stuff you enjoy cultivates genuine charisma that will end up radiating from you all day and night.

9 habits of insanely charming and charismatic people:
They are empathetic.
They are humble.
They are vulnerable.
They are have a sense of humor.
They are present.
They are genuinely interested in EVERYONE.
They avoid social narcissism.
They are generous and altruistic.
Check out some old time movies with men who exude charisma.
Marlin Brando, Cary Grant, Humphry Bogart, James Cagney, etc.
Compare them to other charismatic actors like John Candy and John Belushi .

Dunno these characteristics also make a “nice guy”
[–]Burningroom69 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Add a little light hearted teasing, flirty compliment, natural touch. Now you’re not putting her on a pedestal and showing you intend to be more than a nice guy pal.
[–]mabden 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nice guy behavior has a "hidden" agenda behind it. Having these traits and being genuine does not make you "nice guy."

Practice being outgoing in other areas beyond dating
[–]Yerebeets 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If it feels forced and cringey, you're presenting something fake while deep inside you know you're still not there. That can be a good sign since it means that you know you can be better, so you have to improve. You should play a long term game. Improve yourself internally (mentally, physically, career wise) and don't stop pursuing women, even just for the sake of practicing. After a while it will start to feel natural and you'll get better and better results.
Let me know if you need anything else.

I learn it from YouTube Charisma on Command.

Socialising is a skill that you can get good at over time but you’ll have to throw yourself in uncomfortable situations to actually learn, once you learn how to carry a conversation you don’t need much of anything else.

Be yourself. Just……be…… yourself and own it.
Such a good question and I’ve struggled with this myself. I think most people who aren’t naturally super outgoing have. What I can say is that it’s more a skill than a particular technique. Practice being more outgoing and charismatic and you’ll get better with time. It takes practice and remember that social muscles are similar to physical muscles in your body. If you don’t exercise them, they atrophy.

Blunt brutal honesty without fear of consequence. You must be willing to alienate very attractive women if you don’t like their personalities.
Just be yourself, no secrets

Cringey is an opinion. Its better to be cringey than being boring and not thought about at all.
And you can get better at not being cringey. Cringey is getting better at not being boring...

I think you have seen too many videos...if you are trying to be something that you are not. Dude, if you talk to girls you have no time to be boring... talk to girls dude, if you are trying to laugh without reason you will look weird but also if you are trying to be charismatic without being a charismatic person... you don't look good at all.

Charisma is just you being you. Find your sense of humor and lean into it. Focus on being self entertained and having fun. If you have fun, you’ll enjoy it and it won’t feel forced

Confidence in who you are usually leads to natural charisma. I’m finally started to get my confidence back after 15 years of major depression, and I’ve noticed that it just sorta happens now.

I feel it’s learn perfecting any new skill …. Consider surfing at first you aren’t in any sync but you are trying to balance yourself. Later you balance yourself and then ride the wave. At first force yourself , you don’t have to do it all night do it for a bit.
[–]Captain_Doppelganger 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You first have to understand that there's a difference between trying to be charismatic and outgoing. When your trying to be charismatic, your trying to force yourself into being the center of attention, while making it seem natural. When your trying to be outgoing, your trying to make yourself more social than you regularly are.
If you want to be more charismatic, than I would suggest getting comfortable with who you are as a person first; unironically, knowing who you are and accepting it opens you up to a level of comfortability that will make the charisma your trying to exude natural, and will give you a confidence boost that will make it easier for you to interact with others or vice versa.
If you are looking to be more outgoing, then you have to start pushing yourself more and more outside of your comfort zone. My personal suggestion to be more outgoing? Look for someone random that grabs your interest, once you do that start any kind of interaction with them, whether it be a conversation or something as simple as a fist bump once or twice a day. If you go with the fist bump, you'll eventually going to have to start a full on conversation with them(through text or in person, usually comes down to personal preference or circumstance) in order to start building a friendship of some kind, though it's much easier since you and them have engaged in the daily interaction of fist bumps.
Hope this helped in some way!

Be natural. Be yourself in that inaccessible kind if way. There’s nothing more attractive than being authentic and assertive.
[–]Aggressive_Pianist25 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Just let it flow if you feel like it’s for Ed it probably is. just be being quiet and shy if that is what you naturally are (which I don’t think it is). Just let yourself feel everything and accept it all.

How do you think actors, singers, musicians all feel when they first begin performing publicly? That uncomfortable feeling will fade as you gain experience and become comfortable in your own skin.

Start going out to comfortable places with comfortable people around. If you don’t know any place/people, write down what do you like and wanna go. Example: museum, nice coffee shops, small concerts, movie theater… and just go. Be yourself, be open.
