You display many positive attributes by saying basically awful things as the first thing you say when you meet someone.

You are confident
You have status
You are not needy
You are not desperate
You get attention from the entire group because your statement is controversial
You stand out

Etc. That's why it works.

Looks most likely had little or nothing to do with it. Women get attracted to guys who stand out from the rest and convey alpha like behaviors. So, saying that line could have conveyed those things.

In general, you can practice saying things like this and see if you can recover form it. Tone it down if you can't. Turn it up if you can. If it backfires, just say "I was just kidding" and change the subject. In other words, just calibrate.

Thing to remember is that every girl or group of girls may react differently. So, don't expect this to always work. Learn to calibrate to the person or group you are talking to.

Don't use cheesy verbals unless it's congruent to who you are as a person. For example, I'm an artist, photography, etc, and will tell girls to let me draw them like a french girl. this hints at being sexual without being overly gamey. if she responds baddly to that comment I don't want her anyways because i'm always playful with sex jokes even with friends i would never fuck
