At the end of February I got to know an amazing girl and we went on two great dates. I don’t escalate things quickly when I see a serious relationship potential, but everything was there: discussion went smoothly, we shared 5-seconds long eye contacts, I felt interest from her side and she really made impression on me.

However, the day after our second date our university closed and we were sent home. We are now hundreds of kilometres from each other and don’t know each other well enough to set up a meeting during these difficult times.

Since we began messaging when we got to know each other, we exchanged very long messages (often 100+ words) via Facebook with frequency of no more than 1 per day. A few days into quarantine I suggested that since we both are such a sporadic and exhaustive texters, let’s write emails instead. It was a great improvement for the following reasons:

  1. The frequency is even lower, we often wait 2 – 4 days to respond, but messages are much longer and cover more topics. This way I don’t have to think WHAT to write about, I have plenty of topics to choose from and I can easily bring another one to the table. This is a huge one for me, because often even when I am texting with a girl I really like, it’s sometimes hard to think of a topic and conversation becomes somewhat artificial.
  2. It may be months until we finally see each other again, but I am sure our conversations will continue until that. I couldn’t say that with such a certainty if we were texting short texts on daily basis because it’s hard to keep that kind of conversation going when there is zero or little chance we can meet personally. How many of us experienced a conversation that after a time dried out and she responded with an emoji, or worse, not responded at all?
  3. Waiting for the response is less stressing. When I send an email of 500 words and it takes her 4 days to respond to it, I don’t care a bit because it takes time to respond with a message of similar length.
  4. Exchanging emails is interesting and might give her experience she hasn’t had before. This is second girl I write emails with and both have been amazing conversations.

That’s it, guys, those were my 2 cents. Be strong and stay at home!

EDIT: As was pointed out in the comments, this works only in specific situations and for specific people. Don't take it as a general advice, I just wanted to share my view.
