Please keep going. People like you are who we need the most. You seem purely to want help others and ignore all the fighting, hate and anger. You can't be ignored forever, and sooner or later people will start to realize how horrible it is that people are fighting to stop you from doing good and making lives better. I commend you, sir.

But i can't help but get angry at the obstacles i face in the form of willfully ignorant feminists.

You can, and you must. Take up a meditation practice to gain more control over your own mind. Anger will wear you down, sap your resources, cloud your thinking, and give others an easy excuse to ignore you.

Anger is a short-term strategy, like for dealing with some asshole at a bar. Anger is not a valid strategy for dealing with entrenched social issues - it continuously degrades the experience of you and everyone who has to be around you when you're angry.

Stupid people with shitty ideologies and irrational behavior are not some special case, some temporary problem that you can just get up one day and blow away with a huge burst of anger. They are a constant fact of human society from the distance past to the distant future. Think of these stupid people as rocks on a hillside - they are obstacles, and they make things difficult, but your idea of a path without those rocks is a false idea. The simple fact is that if you want to climb that hill, you will have to encounter and scramble over those rocks.

Just think of it as terrain, and this will prevent you from getting angry. Nobody gets angry at a steep section of a trail - they just tighten their straps and start ascending one step at a time. Nobody gets angry at shitty weather - they just plan accordingly and deal with it with grim-faced determination. One of your friends being a dick to you - that's a reason to be angry. For about ten seconds, then you speak your mind and the anger is gone. But being angry at feminists is not going to find a healthy outlet, and it's going to destroy your guts and make your breathing shallow and make you unable to persist for the long-haul.

Practice some regular shamatha meditation (google it) to develop focus and a level of choice over your emotional responses. After you've established that, also do some metta meditation (google it) to develop more compassion. That compassion is a long-haul fuel for change, and provides passion just like anger. Compassion whipped to a high degree by focused meditation like that is a healthy passion that burns hot and long and sustains your body and mind, making you stronger each day. Anger whipped to a high degree by frustration with stupid people is an unhealthy passion that burns deep and dirty and fills your body with adrenaline and cortisol and ulcers, and fills your mind with black soot that removes your ability to be creative and flexible.

Anger is a pitfall for a social activist. Look where it's gotten the feminists - they started off with a decent idea from the definition but allowed themselves to cultivate anger and now they're basically a force of evil and propaganda and division and wonton, arbitrary destruction.

Be compassionate, not angry.

[–]gprime 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm sorry, but your post is absurd. Anger is the logical reaction to what he's faced. Attempting to deny that does no good. What is useful is translating that anger into motivation to keep up the good fight. Also reasonable is making sure that the anger one has doesn't infect rhetoric to the point of costing one support, though the OP seems to have a handle on that.

[–]intensely_human 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My post is not absurd. Long-term anger will make a person bitter and horrible and unhealthy. Emotions can be controlled, and this is something adults do all the time.

If someone is going into the social activism space, anger is a major pitfall and is very destructive.

To complete the slap in the face to men, the article has a feminist ad running right in the middle of it.

Don't worry. Men are already fighting back. They've formed an international society that is bringing men together from every continent on the globe: Manhood 101. com

[–]loddfavne 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

This is just a bunch of ideas I have on this topic:

no mention of misandry.

This is a point you can use to your advantage. The feminists won't even achnoledge this word exists. So, you can make an anti-misandric society and there will be no overlap.

If you need statistics to help you, you can use the declining number in men in universities to your advantage. You can also cite psychology where men change their behavior when there's women around. Both these statistics can help you to argument for your cause.

If you receive threats or harrasment from feminists, this is pure gold, because this will prove beyond doubth that there needs to be a society that caters towards men.

[–]ulthrant82 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't think he wants to start an anti-misandry group though. I'm pretty sure he's not anti-hate, he's pro-help. He doesn't want to stop anyone, he wants to help men. And he shouldn't have to skirt around feminist groups to do it. I like where you're coming from, but this has to be dealt with head on or it will never be fixed.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

he shouldn't have to skirt around feminist groups to do it

I know i shouldn't, but the fact is I do. And that sucks, but hey, it's like that. I can't change that. Might as well do whatever i can to get it done.

[–]Samurai007_ 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminism is supposedly "the group that supports equality between men and women." (That's a lie of course, but it's the definition they like to use).

If you want equality between men and women, by definition, you must be a feminist. You just want a Feminist group with a slightly different focus, the same as a disabled feminists group, or a black feminists group, you wanted a male feminists group (ie, "a group of men fighting for equality between the sexes"). So, they said "just join the existing feminist group."

In order to show that you are not Feminist, and in fact that Feminists are the reason why many men have problems, you'd have to oppose Feminism, like those "bad MRAs" online, and they certainly don't want a group like THAT on campus...

[–]intensely_human 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

cite psychology where men change their behavior when there's women around

Do you have citations for this? I'm not really skeptical - I've seen and felt the change in men when women are present vs absent - but it would be interesting to be able to prove it to people who either won't see it (men) or can't see it (women).

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

‘Feminism exists for women’ and ‘it would be extremely unreasonable to expect this space to support and cater for the needs of men'.

You can't have a mens group because a womens group already exists... which is explicitly opposed to including men.

These people are delusional.

[–]geoffry31 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Good luck if you try to push it further, I'm not aware of anyone trying to setup a similar society at my university (Uni of Sheffield). However from my experience with the current union officers, I'm aware that their argument towards other equality initiatives is that women are institutionally oppressed (aka patriarchy) and therefore male problems are insignificant and don't deserve equal attention/publicity.

I found this from a discussion with the (male) development officer regarding the inequality of a dedicated womens officer with no male equivalent, and the current president promoting misandry on social media, during a private meeting about an unrelated matter.

In my case I've just decided that attempting to fight union politics is too much effort, the majority of the student body are indifferent (just look at the turnout for any of your union elections), so long as their bar and club nights are unaffected and the remainder an bubble of extreme hard-left views.

Student union wouldn't cover the story.

In the UK there is now an independent national student news blog The Tab, with local versions for many universities. I've found that they're often more critical of the union, than the official students union news.

I wouldn't be surprised if they get more views than the official student news, I certainly see their articles shared on social media more often. It's also pretty easy to get approved to write content for them, although their content guidelines and direction can make it hard to justify to them extended/well sourced articles.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

i didn't even know there was official student news. But then again, they probably don't saturate it with clickbait and meaningless articles read by people who are in trying to procrastinate.

[–]geoffry31 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Uni of Shef has Forge as it's union funded news/media hub, I would have thought other universities have similar arrangements.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

yeah i thought i'd try. my post on the overheard group about making a society for male rights got like 400 likes and a surprising amount of support, had a load of people messaging me saying it was a great idea and they'd love to get involved. I had a glimmer of hope.

But i forgot that the SU doesn't want to seem anti-feminist, considering the bad publicity durham has had recently regarding lad culture and rape culture (rugby teams playing a 'it's not rape if' game, which is horrible). So obviously they're not going to support it.

also, on paper, if you see a men's rights group, and a feminist group, you're going to think they're against each other. A more reasonable person would think it's because feminism is only concerned with women and not actual equality, but most people would just demonise the men's group. so it's probably a publicity issue.

it's a fucking shame though, the fear of bad publicity (which in itself if unwarranted and bullshit) is prioritised over actually helping to solve real fucking problems.

[–]geoffry31 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I think you just have to be clear that both feminism and mens rights have bad examples and good examples, and that to fearmonger that all mens rights groups are about misogyny is simply offensive, when there's ample data to show areas that men are at a disadvantage.

Similarly, if they insist on playing the anti-feminism angle, you could suggest that if feminist philosophy is not open to criticism and debate, should it really be given a platform? And that you would hope that a mens interest group should also be held to such a standard.

we make the mistake of assuming you can change these people's minds with reason and facts. I have since learned that is simply not possible, so you have to play their game.

This to me is the saddest thing. It makes you feel insane because it makes so much sense when you objectively look at the things we have issue with but like you said earlier in the comment, it's like they're brainwashed and Patriarchy is the literal catch all for anything they can't explain or BS through. Feminists don't have to care if they are right and why would they when any and all criticism is blamed on Patriarchy? When you phrase things a certain way most people will agree with it, it's only when gender or initials are applied that everyone loses all ability to reason.

[+][deleted] 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[permanently deleted]

[–]AtomicBLB 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It was not my intention to imply Patriarchy doesn't exist at all, but that it can't be the end all argument, for the reasons you already stated. There are mega rich people who happen to be male, and money speaks volumes and people are easily bought. They just don't care about the average male any more than anyone else does. If men have it bad too then I think Feminists take that as saying women don't have it as bad and somehow hurts women. The "men have their own problems" argument always ring hollow for some reason.

[–]geoffry31 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

so you have to play their game.

Or just ignore them, as you probably noticed with the support you got on Facebook(?). It's a vocal minority who have gained power in students unions, the majority are indifferent and whilst they may sympathise with the unions position, they are often alot more open to compromise and accepting it's flaws.

[–]victorymonk 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Great job on attempting that. I don't know how you managed Telegraph to write about it, but even better. In the comments for the article sb posted a link:(https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_V7PAJ_vYq_ZDhpanNfclRhb3c/view?pli=1) to "FEMSOC CODE OF CONDUCT FOR MEN IN FEMINIST SPACES" that has passages such as

[There are] ... core things that are non-negotiable: feminism is the movement of women’s liberation from male oppression and the patriarchy..."

So yeah...

Anyway, I'm wondering may be instead of suggesting a group focusing on gender equality, frame it as Men's Health or Men's Support group. Gender equality now is exclusively viewed through feminism and so "women-only" things are actually gender equality. So when you say gender equality they think female superiority feminism. So to repeat framing the group purpose differently? Forget equality just like feminism did (or never knew). Health? Suicide? Academic progress other things that affect men negatively.

[–]PerniciousOne 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That is amazing that the guardian actually posted a reasonable article describing the issues you experienced trying to set up a support and educating group for men.

Hopefully the press will help them change their minds when it comes to allowing you to form the group. Be prepared for heavy feminist reaction to the formation of the society.

Good Luck!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I know we had this convo before, but I think the name of your society may have caused some problems. I'm an unapologetic MRA, and like "Men's Human Rights Society" just fine. But it seems like you weren't trying to take a stand on the broader issue of Men's overall position in society (perfectly reasonable, IMO). You were, or so it seems, looking to address issues that affect men while avoiding identification with the MRM. The name implies otherwise.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That is spot on, that is exactly what i was trying to do. Someone just suggested an 'anti-misandry' society, which i think could be a better name. Just get the word men/ male out of it, and attack a concept. That may work better.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think "anti-misandry" is too confrontational, tbh. I don't think there's any shame in picking a bland title. The challenge at hand is getting groups started - you can always change the name when you're more established. When gays first started organizing in the US in the 1950s, they chose titles like the 'Mattachine Society', and 'The Daughters of Bilitis' - names that were just too obscure to be associated with a taboo identity. It allowed them to start organizing and build a platform for activism. Right now, we just need groups on campus, regardless of the name. And thank you for all your efforts, btw. You've clearly put a lot of energy into this, and deserve congratulations for that alone.

[–]Jernlov 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

You need to take or at least threaten legal action against these student societies. I'm sure there is a lawyer willing to take on this case at a reasonable fee considering you are a student.

Here in Canada, when student unions tried to stop pro-life groups from forming on campus, an independent legal body that looks after student interests threatened a lawsuit. The student unions backed down.

There will be some very interesting legal angles I think. This is mainly because the University and Student Union will be dripping in anti-sexist and gender neural rules and regulations — all put there by feminists! So it's fun when you use them to help men.

[–]whelponry 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Good luck with this. You should fight this as much as possible. The UK has a horrendous double standard when it comes to men's rights vs. women's rights, and it's completely unacceptable. If you can coordinate an ECHR complaint, that would be good as well. Hit them hard and fast, and draw attention to their hypocrisy.

On a side note, this whole "lad culture" that the article brings up should be counterbalanced with a "lass culture". Women rape men too, and if they're making you take those classes but not making women then make that part of the complaint.

[–]intensely_human 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

In general you should contact a few different lawyers and find one who works well with you so you know who to call if and when either shit hits the fan, or you need to use a prybar where solvent isn't working.

A good relationship with a lawyer whom you can introduce as "this is my lawyer" is an enormous asset in the current world. Being without a lawyer on Earth in 2015 is like being without a spear on Earth in 16,000 BC. It's just standard equipment.

[–]Dnile1000BC 18 points19 points20 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

He said...

“MRAs on the internet [...] are ruining it for people who actually care about men’s issues.

“I’ve gone through their websites and they don’t do anything – they’re the definition of slacktivism. They’re people who sit on their computers bitching about feminism. They’re just ruining it.”

Yet on the other hand...

Despite Adam making a powerfully eloquent and heartfelt case for a standalone men’s group, on Thursday, Durham University’s Societies Committee rejected his plea, telling him he could only operate from within the Feminist Society.

So the Societies Committee kicked it into the long grass and told him he could only run a men's group as part of the existing feminist organisation, yet he bemoans MRAs 'bitching about feminism'? When is the penny going to drop that a substantial part of the reason more work for men is not done is that often, when someone tries, feminists step in to prevent it or absorb it into their own activities? I for one have no great desire to rub shoulders with feminists as part of any group, though I would not seek to ban them from any meetings, so long as they could manage not to disrupt them.

In any case, there are plenty of opportunities for action on this very subreddit. Intactivists and father's rights groups are actively campaigning for men's rights, even though they might not identify as 'MRAs'. Personally, I don't hold it against anybody else how little volunteering or activism they do, we can only do what we are able to.

“To be clear, I’m not interested in waging ideological war against feminism and want to distance myself from those MRAs and misogynists who seem to spend a disproportionate amount of time bashing feminism. I want to help men. Instead of just bitching about stuff on the internet I want to get into activism.

Charming. You make your bed, you lie on it. How does it feel?

[–]ZimbaZumba 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

The present feminist regime plaguing our universities and other institutions has been allowed to proceed without any opposition. Opposition has been simply been smeared and crushed in the finest fascist of traditions. The whole phenomena is a house of cards built on foundations of sand. The slightest credible opposition and it will come tumbling down.

These people know that university groups are their Achilles heel. Students are difficult to smear and intimidate; students are strident. Universities provide a gathering place for ideas to ferment and have a constant flow of new people who are the future opinion makers.

The very things that allowed these poisonous forces to form can bring them down. Feminists know this and are doing everything in power to stop men organising. Democracy relies on a competition of ideas, it is a system of checks and balances; eliminate the checks and balances then you spiral into a totalitarianism.

[–]PeteyMax 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

“To be clear, I’m not interested in waging ideological war against feminism and want to distance myself from those MRAs and misogynists who seem to spend a disproportionate amount of time bashing feminism." Yet it was feminists who blocked the creation of the men's society. MRAs spend a lot of time fighting feminism not because they want to but because they have to. Because every attempt to draw attention to men's issues and ultimately to improve the treatment of men in society is blocked and ridiculed by feminists. This latest event is still more proof as if you needed it.

I admire your willingness to get active, but good luck with that naivety about feminism. It's actually striking that you've gone through this, are aware that others all over the world have gone through this, yet you still can't see a big part of the problem.

I see your point about attacking feminism not being the best way to get support for your society, but I don't see why you have to fuel the MRA = misogyny misconception. It is not exactly helping others who are not afraid to identify themselves as men's rights activists.

we need one, centralised, cohesive equality movement to focus on both genders problems.

Given that women have strong group preference for women's concerns and men have weak group preference for women's concerns... you'll end up with what already exists: a movement for women which excludes men's issues.

Frankly, it's hard to admire this choice, so typical of cool-obsessive conformism in students, even those self-styled radicals, perhaps especially them.

No one will kill you for speaking up. Cower if you want, but know you do your enemy's job for them.

That said, I am not in your shoes, and I too cower.

I spoke out when I was at uni. My professors openly told me they would speak negatively about me if I tried to get to grad school. I think I may have been secretly blacklisted.

There are worse things than working for a low wage doing something useful.

Very very sadly, I think you're right about the repercussions in the UK. The culture there is astonishingly progressive to the point of destroying nearly every vestige of traditional culture within the UK for a twisted self-loathing view of that which was formerly there. Feminism is merely one of many manifestations of that, much like capitulation to sharia law is for certain religious groups in the UK.

Here in the US, Thomas Jefferson once said "The tree of liberty must be refreshed periodically by the blood of patriots." In this case, it's not real blood but your ability to be productive in society once you're publicly labeled as being against women for speaking out, when it's obvious you aren't. If you really fight this, I'm sure many men and women including those in this subreddit will be behind you all the way.

You are correct, sir! A huge problem with third-wave feminism is that it's schizophrenic when it regards the power of a woman. Should a woman be extended extra rights over men, or should she be considered equal? It's all agenda-driven, designed to destroy traditional notions of family and human interaction and embed the state where it has no business being. Other than to advocate for true equality (which would really make you and I ERAs, or equal-rights advocates), we need to stand up against this insanity. Great story about your mother overcoming such adversity yet retaining her humility. Good luck sir!

Why are UK universities blocking men's societies? It also seems to happen in the USA, Canada and Australia.

Because they are afraid.

I'll report back after i dip my toes back into sociology (it's a hobby, i'm a network tech). In australia when i was studying it two years ago it was very balanced. I've distinctions in exam essays where i dissected feminism for being unbalanced, unfalsifiable and reasoned for balanced approach to social policy. I hope it's still just as balanced at my old campus.

Do we really live in a world where not offending university feminist societies is deemed more important than helping men in need?

Of course we do.

You're right, the "Men's Rights" label is a tarnished brand. Instead, how about:

"Men's Well-being Society."

Or, "Men's Health Society," where "health" is broadly interpreted.

Anything focusing on or having to do with men potentially takes the focus, money, attention, and support away from women and thus will be deemed a danger and a threat by feminists. It doesn't matter what the name is, or how much you say you aren't like those "bad MRAs", because even if they believe you, you'll still be seen as a threat. To them, the total amount of money, support, and care in the world is like a giant pie, and you are asking some of that to go to men rather than women. Their goal is to get as much of that money/support pie for women. Thus, you are an opponent, a threat to be eliminated.
