Hell fucking no, don't do it. I would rather lose a finger than my foreskin.

First up: it's not yours. It's his. Bodily integrity is a human right. Imposing cosmetic surgery on non-consenting infants is not.

Second, foreskins are awesome. Let me count the ways:

Tens of thousands of nerve endings. That's an astounding amount of sensory bandwidth.
Those nerve endings include a whole lot of sensitive stretch receptors - as the foreskin moves, it reports a whole lot of positional detail. That's a whole extra kind of sensation we're talking about.
Frictionless gliding mechanism. The foreskin isn't just a "piece of skin", it's a toroidal linear bearing, providing completely frictionless movement, far superior to any amount of lubrication. Okay, break to explain this one:

Take a stretchy satin shirt, with the sleeves too long, about a hand-length past your fingertips. Put it on, turn the end of the sleeve in on itself, and glue the cuff to your watch strap. You now have a functional model of an intact penis. Your hand is the glans, the sleeve is the foreskin, your arm is the shaft.

Now grasp your sleeve, and extend your arm to look at your watch. The fabric rolls over your hand - it doesn't slide. There's no friction against your hand at all, because nothing slides over it.

Or take a pinch of eyelid/elbow/scrotum skin, and rub between thumb and finger. Again, no friction on your finger pads whatsoever, despite a firm grip. This is what we experience. We don't need lube to masturbate, because we have something far better built-in.

Stimulation from friction sucks next to frictionless massaging. Intact guys have access to both - and while friction can be an interesting place to visit, none of us would ever want to live there.
The frenulum is known by some as the 'male clitoris', and is exquisitely sensitive. Even if it's preserved (it usually isn't), one of the things it's most sensitive to is stretching as the foreskin retracts. No foreskin, no stretching, you've just lost a vast amount of sexual pleasure.
The foreskin protects and moisturises the surface of the glans (which is an internal organ, and does not have skin), keeping it sensitive and supple. Men undergoing foreskin restoration report that the difference in sensation is akin to the difference between wearing a condom and going bareback.
Because we don't rely on friction for stimulation, condoms don't suck nearly as much for us as they do for circumcised guys.

There are no good reasons to circumcise.

Hygiene is not an issue. Five seconds in the shower, just pull back, wash, release, done. Washing your ears is harder work than that, but you don't go cutting those off.
I daresay that there are lots of guys in the world that find intact female genitalia 'weird', too - but if someone suggested you should cut up your daughter to suit them, you'd punch them in the face. Think about that.
In some places, the majority of girls are circumcised, too. If you went to live there, would you have your daughter circumcised so she would be "normal"?

Even if you wanted to, there's no good reason to do it early.

It's his body, it ought to be his competent adult choice. You wouldn't give him a tattoo - or even let him get one himself - until he was an adult, so why this?
Done as an adult (assuming he wanted to), there's vastly more margin for error, plus he could actually choose exactly how he wanted it done.
In infancy, the foreskin is fused to the glans, like your nails are fused to the nail bed - and needs to be forcibly stripped free. Why deliberately choose the extra-traumatic option?
Infants cannot be given sufficient pain relief, either during the operation or during the healing process. There's research to indicate that the trauma has permanent effects on neural development, including permanently lowering their pain tolerance. Why would you do that to your own kid?
A diaper environment is a terrible place for a wound to heal. Jesus, just think about that.

And that's not even covering stuff that can go wrong. Google for 'botched circumcision' sometime, along with 'necrotizing fasciitis'.

In short: there's lots of inherent downsides, lots of risks, no benefits, and no all-fired hurry to do it as a child.

Just leave it alone. Your kid does not need bits cut off him.

The pain is unbearable for infants as well. They scream with pain until they pass out from oxygen deprivation. Adults can get pain medication on demand. Infants cannot consent for this surgery and it's a basic human rights issue. Other problems include the risk of glans amputation and sepsis (blood infection.) Every surgery carries risks and babies die from botched foreskin amputations. I don't understand why anyone would take that risk on their healthy infant. Also, there have been adults who were circumcised as adults and can describe sex before and after. Apparently sex with a foreskin is like watching color tv and sex without a foreskin is like watching black and white tv. Please let your son decide for himself. It's his body.

We have evolved a forskin for a reason It makes sex more comfortoble for men and women unless you want to buy lube all your life or your lucky enough to find a girl that never drys up. I am asuming you are American? we had a documentary over here in England years ago investigating the practice of circumsison in America. basically it came down to "cercumsision is a multi billion dollar industry in Amaerica" so your medical practitoners are somewhat biast towards it. It's really not that hard a concept: If you want to cut off a piece of someone elses body, ask for permission and GET IT before you stick your knife in him or her. A person's body is that person's alone. Period.

It is painful.

It is surgery and with all surgery comes complications(including death).

All of the beneficial effects(admittedly, they are not very well supported, but assuming that they are) can be prevented with a condom(and UTIs are so minor anyway that it is just stupid to do it for that).

He can always choose to have it done later. The reverse is not true.

I've got 2 boys, now 11 & 9 yrs old. My wife & I agreed that there is no reason for them to be circumsized - men are made that way, with 10's, 100's, even 1000's of 1000's of years of evolution behind us. If foreskins were a problem, they'd have been naturally de-selected ages ago. That being said, my older son developed issues (foreskin did not detach completely and would allow for the glans to be properly exposed, painful urination, & hygiene problems) and a circumsicion was necessary. This was the most horrific day of his life, as a 5 yr old, with weeks of pain during recovery. I would not wish this anguish on anyone, especially a newborn. Don't do it! BTW- I am cut, and this is the one thing I wish my parents had left alone.

I don't understand why mutilating and permanently removing thousands of functional and unique tissues of another defenseless human being is even a valid thing to debate. I am constantly astonished at the double-standards and ignorance about the what male circumcision is and what effect it has. Historically, the Egyptians did it to slaves to take away their sexual pleasure. The Jews did it to remove sexual pleasure so that men would not be "distracted" by it and could be closer to God. Dr. Kellogg is responsible for starting the trend in western culture in the late 1800's. He attributed all disease of the body and mind in males to masturbation, concluding that the loss of sexual function and sensation from circumcision would keep males from masturbating. He also said that the terrible pain from the experience would traumatize males against sexuality. Curiously at this same time in American history, doctors were promoting female sexuality and the female orgasm was promoted as the cure to all ills. Females were brought into doctor's office to be massaged to orgasm. Circumcision of males is based on religious zealotry against male sexuality, historically, and continues to this day only by ridiculous assertions of hygiene and superficial appearance. It brings in easy revenue for the medical industry both from the procedure and the selling of foreskin tissue for research and development in cosmetics.

Much more than the foreskin is lost through this process. The details are widely available online for anyone who really cares enough to understand the history of male circumcision and it's physical and psychological ramifications, even and perhaps especially when done to a newborn infant.

At it's most basic, circumcision is a procedure that can be performed at any point in a person's life and there is absolutely no reason that a person should be subject to the amputation of any functional tissue absent of medical necessity. If you subscribe to the concept that it reduces AIDS, there is really no reason to be concerned about that for a child, and if he decides at the age of sexual maturity that he wants that, again he can make that decision for himself.

If anyone believes that the foreskin is just some extra skin of no real consequence, they owe it to themselves to do some in-depth reading about what is actually cut from the body in a male circumcision, otherwise they are speaking from total ignorance.

But ultimately, if you have any respect whatsoever for your son, if you believe in human rights at all, you don't need anything beyond this: His body, his choice. It's called the human right to self-determination. We're not talking about vaccines here, we're talking about amputation of healthy tissue for aesthetics.

No. You would be asking the doctor to perform cosmetic surgery on your newborn boy. There is no medical purpose to newborn circumcision - any benefit that proponents claim can be better acheived in other methods. Proponents claim relief from UTIs, penile cancer, STDs/HIV, locker room teasing, and easier cleaning.

UTIs can be cured with $4 antibiotics and prevented with breastfeeding. In any case, UTIs in males are very rare.

Penile cancer is an extremely rare cancer of old men. Your son is at higher risk of getting and dying from breast cancer than he is of getting an easily treatable case of penile cancer. Further, a search of PubMed will reveal cases of penile cancer in circumcised men, so the protection provided by circumcision is unlikely.

STDs/HIV - the U.S. boast some of the highest STD/HIV rates in the developed world despite having nearly universal circumcision rates in the adult population. Circumcised American men can and do die from HIV/AIDs every day. Practicing safe sex is the only way to avoid STDs/HIV.

Locker room teasing is a nonissue. No one gets naked in the locker room while in high school. On the off chance that nudity is involved, you have to look at a dude's junk pretty closely to see if he's cut or not. Who's really going to get teased? The dude with the foreskin or the locker room penis looker?

Cleaning an intact baby is easier. There's no wound care. There's no wound sitting in a shitty diaper. Just wipe the outside off like a finger and never retract the foreskin. In childhood, typical bathing is plenty. In puberty, the boy needs to pull back the skin and rinse. Proponents say that getting a teen to wash his penis is a big deal, but most guys need no encouragement to touch themselves.

Proponents never mention problems steming from newborn circumcision. Meatal stenosis which is when the urinary meatis essentially closes up from scar tissue. This requires surgery to repair. There's the permanent lose of nerve endings in the area where one really wants them. There are often surgical revisions needed for a satisfactory results.

Cirumcision is a surgery. In this case, it is surgery on a newborn. A lot can go wrong. Recently, the company that makes the Mogen circumcision clamp was sued out of business because their device caused a glans amputation.

Try something for me - I think I know how to make your own foreskin simulator.

Cut both ends off a condom, giving a simple latex tube.

Thread it on a broomstick or anything wide enough to hold it in place.

Turn the bottom up like a trouser cuff, half an inch below the top.

Using an eyedropper or syringe, put a few drops of lube into the pocket thus created.

Run a line of superglue around the turned-up edge, and fold the top down over it to make a fillet join.

You should now have a toroidal linear bearing - a double-walled tube, with lube between the two walls. It's unlikely to stay in place for sex, but you should be able to experiment on your own. If you need more length, use two condoms, fillet-joined as above.

It won't replace the missing sensation of course, and if you've been cut since infancy you'll have lost some sensitivity - but this should at least demo the mechanics of the gliding mechanism.

Try it and report back.

I can tell you right now that I'm very happy that I'm circumcised. My girlfriend and anyone she asks about the subject says that circumcised penises are so much better. It looks better, sexier etc. I'm glad I don't have to deal with the extra hygiene care either, of course I still wash down there, but you obviously have to take more care of it if you are uncut.

Everyone here also seems to think that once you're cut, your penis goes numb or something. Sex still feels great okay?

I'm perfectly happy with being cut. In fact, if I wasn't, I would go get cut right now.

I have had three serious relationships with men (I'm an American woman)--two have been circumcised, one was not. All three had perfectly functioning penises and were satisfied with their orgasms (actually, the uncircumcised one had some problems with ED, but I think that was psychological). Obviously, the downside to circumcision is the small chance that the job will be botched, they'll cut it too tight or really damage his penis. It's a tiny risk, but a risk nonetheless. Also, if you are an American, I have many female friends who think uncircumcised penises are gross, but honestly I don't think a lot of them have any experience with one and if they liked the guy would get over that really fast.

I hear guys on here talking about how all the nerve endings on the foreskin make an uncircumcised man's orgasms better, but comparing quality of orgasms is sort of like comparing happiness. Can you really ever know if someone's sexual experiences are better than yours, and that it's directly related to your foreskin's removal? If stimulation of a circumcised penis is all you've ever known, and you're happy with it, are you really missing out? My current boyfriend is circumcised, and we've discussed this a bit, and his opinion is "I have a happy, healthy, enjoyable sex life. So I don't care if people swear their uncircumcised orgasms must be better than mine."

Other than cultural reasons, or marginally for reasons of hygiene (my uncircumcised bf had to wash off his penis before we fooled around because it always smelled sweaty and funky...even though he showered and cleaned it and whatnot), the only reason I could really think of to circumcise a boy would are emerging studies that suggest that circumcised men in some African studies have contracted HIV at much lower rates than uncircumcised men. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumcision#Human_immunodeficiency_virus) The studies are very new, and some do not show this, but if there were a really clear and definite link determined in the future, I would certainly consider circumcising. Pain that the boy won't remember in exchange for a statistically smaller chance that he would contract HIV (I'm not going to assume a future son of mine would be consistent with condoms because I know so many men who aren't), and therefore spread it to others--that seems like a fair exchange.

First of all, circumcisions were once thought to be only a religious thing. Only fairly recently has the medical field recognized it's hygienic benefits. In that regard I fully support circumcision. It has good results, so it makes sense to me.

People replying to this are pretty ignorant when they say you can just do it later. Does any circumcised man remember his circumcision? No, and the reason is because you were an infant when you did it. You don't remember anything before age 3. I've heard the pain is pretty unbearable when you're older and it goes without saying that recovery is MUCH longer.

One of the wonderful things about the claims of uncircumsized men is that it is much more pleasureful when having sex.

Of course, the only way to really test it empirically is through adult self-reporting, already a poor measure. Further, it can only be tested one way: uncircumsized to circumsized. So ordering bias comes into play with any testing method.

I once did a test of natural versus artificial sugars. 4 glasses and 4 kinds. I drank each once and I drank them in order. I was convinced that one was natural sugar. But my analysis was based on the order in which I drank things and how that created an anchor point for my taste sensation. Had I actually done an ABADCABCDAC . . . etc. type test, then I would have been much more accurate.

Then don't get me started on once the flavors were actually revealed. Then I could totally tell that a. was stevia and b. was sweet&low - a confirmation bias.

The reason I bring this up is because a lot of the folks here either a) have foreskin regret, or b) have foreskin bias

Circumcision Benefits Outweigh the Risks

Dr Tom Wiswell, a respected authority in the USA was a strong opponent of circumcision, but then switched camps as a result of his own research findings and the findings of others. This is what he has to say: "As a pediatrician and neonatologist, I am a child advocate and try to do what is best for children. For many years I was an outspoken opponent of circumcision ... I have gradually changed my opinion" [Wiswell, 1988; Wiswell, 1992]. This ability to keep an open mind on the issue and to make a sound judgement on the balance of all available information is to his credit ... he did change his mind!

Wiswell looked at the complication rates of having or not having circumcision performed in a study of 136,000 boys born in US army hospitals between 1980 and 1985. 100,000 were circumcised and 193 (0.19%) had complications, mostly minor, with no deaths, but of the 36,000 who were not circumcised the problems were more than ten-times higher and there were 2 deaths [Wiswell & Hachey, 1993]. A study by others found that of the 11,000 circumcisions performed at New York's Sloane Hospital in 1989, only 6 led to complications, none of which were fatal [Russell, 1993]. An early survey saw only one death amongst 566,483 baby boys circumcised in New York between 1939 and 1951 [National, 2003].

There are no deaths today from medical circumcisions in developed countries.

Very similar to the study by Wiswell above, it was found that of 354,297 infants born in Washington State from 1987-96, only 0.20% had a complication arising from their circumcision, i.e., 1 in every 476 circumcisions [Christakis et al., 2000]. Most of these ‘complications’ were minor and readily treated.
