I am a high school teacher. Over the past five years that I have been teaching I have noticed that female teachers have much less patience when it comes to dealing with adolescent boys. Adolescent boys tend to be very energetic and impulsive. They require a tremendous amount of patience which they do not receive from some female teachers.

Also, you would be amazed at the number of achievement programs designed specifically for girls. You want to shadow an engineer for a week? Great, but you better be a girl. Want to get a Microsoft certification for free? Great, but girls only. Want to do your science fair project at a major biotech company? Great, no boys allowed.

I'm sure most have noticed how subjective teachers grading can be. You write the same sort of essay or the same effort for two different teachers and get totally different grades depending on how they like your style - or you look at someone else's essay that got good marks and all you see is bland drivil. This is an extension of that, and can probably explain a lot about who does well and who does badly at school, race, gender, class etc.

Wow, its actually kind of depressing to see such an blatant connection.

I argue thar the system is against men and boys all the time, but it just strange to see that its as simple as female teachers giving boys lower grades.

I guess the bias/harm is even more direct than I thought it would be.

Solution... We need more male teachers ASAP.

I experienced this first-hand in my junior-year HS physics class. The teacher was a self-described feminist. I remember the first week of class, some guys and girls were talking about football, and some guy said something to the effect of "girls can't play tackle football." She butts in and says "That's bullshit, women can do everything men can do if not better." All the guys kind of looked around at each other and the sentiment was "Welp, we're screwed."

She wasn't a particularly good teacher, and physics isn't exactly easy, so we were always confused. If a female student raised her hand and asked for help, she'd come over and carefully explain everything. If a male student raised his hand, she'd brusquely tell him he wasn't trying hard enough and not really bother trying to help.

This was an honors-level class, and after it ended we guys took a quick informal survey - all the girls in the class got As and Bs. None of the guys in the class got higher than a C. One guy in particular was pissed about it, as he was going for top honors and that C was going to drag him down. He was going to fight it...but unfortunately that teacher ended up marrying his dad so the fight got canned.

I feel like this phenomenon is little different in the workplace.

This is only my experience and I realize that the plural of anecdote is not "data," but in my career I've had a much more difficult time finding supportive female supervisors than male supervisors. Although there have been exceptions, I've seen a lot of female supervisors seem to promote and encourage female workers above the male ones.

It's also very interesting how many women say they would prefer to work for a male supervisor.

I only mention these anecdotes because they seem to parallel the story so closely.

Not exactly a surprise, but nice to have some corroboration. Funny how in things where the teachers opinion doesn't matter - math and IQ tests - boys rule, and in subjects the marking of which involves some subjective judgment they drool.

Can anyone from the UK confirm that external examiners don't know the sex of the pupil? I am assuming that they get initials or ID numbers, if not then things get more complicated.

I've always said that we need more male teachers to help out our boys, but I never expected that girls are more motivated with male teachers as well.

While I have an easy time believing it, I doubt the credibility of their external grading study, as they found that male teachers (grading boys) are above the standard and female teachers (grading boys) are below.

I hold myself to the standard that I wouldn't use this in an argument.

10 seconds into reading this:

Male teachers, by contrast, awarded them higher marks than external examiners.

If we assume there are an equal number of male and female teachers then this would level out. This is still a sexism issue, but the article says that it's applied equally to men and women.
