DNA can't really be used to identify people. It can only be used to rule out people, if their DNA is obviously not a match.

This is because even when DNA is a "match" it's not a perfect match, which means it's technically possible that the "match" is not the same person who left the original DNA at the crime scene. Two different people can have very similar DNA.

But I'm sure all this will be forgotten because the word "rape" has been uttered.

Seriously. If they're demanding from you (and 500 others) a DNA specimen, you're already a suspect.

Then what the fuck does it matter if you don't provide a DNA specimen -- they're going to "consider you a suspect" one way or the other, whether you provide a specimen, or not.

Maybe this is their way of saying -- "If you don't volunteer, we're going to force you to submit a specimen anyway."

But then no-one is really volunteering, are they?

It just goes to show, according to some idiots, everything is illegal, unless it's some asshole from the government doing it. Unfortunately, government these days is full of douchebags.

I seem to be the odd one out here, but as long as the testing is not onerous I wouldn't mind at all.

I don't think it's strange that only men are tested, since the (alleged) rapist is supposed to be a man. If it was a crime where the perpetrator could be either man or woman, I wouldn't mind either - as long as both men and women were tested.

Expensive - sure - but I'd think it was worth quite a lot of money to identify a rapist, possibly stopping him from committing more rapes.

I can't really see why many here seem so agitated about it, but I guess I'd better get ready for some downvotes :/

It's just a matter of screening the pupils, it won't take long and I imagine most will be happy to go along with out if it helps move the case along quicker, that's basic empathy. I imagine the only person affected negatively by this is the rapist, that is, if it isn't a visitor.

I know that this is going to be an unpopular opinion but I'm not against the idea in principle.

Look , we have the ability now through science to catch criminals. On the one hand I understand the fear here of letting the state into your most personal life. On the other hand, they're looking for the perpetrator of a very serious crime.

The compromise here is to make it voluntary. As it stands, if you're a male at that school you're already a suspect so this really works to your advantage since the worst thing that can happen is that it removes you from the list of potential suspects.
