Actually the article states that 108 people died in Houla, an event that happened two weeks ago. The article itself if about the town of Quebier where "at least 78 people" died, 40 of whom were women and children, meaning that the remaining 38 were men.

The whole thing is written in a very confusin way, almost as if the author had no hard facts and is just using the attack two weeks ago as filler.

Now, I'm with you that the headline is utter bullshit, and that the lives of the men should not be ignored. I just want to make sure we get the numbers right.

The reason to highlight women and children is to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the attack was not on a para-military base but rather on an ordinary village.

I think part of this title stems from a recent decision by the Whitehouse where any male of fighting range within the vicinity of a drone attack are immediately deemed militants and enemy combatants. This decision is made without any intelligence at all, just their presence.

It's done to keep the reported civilian casualty count low.

Would you rather the title be, "Over 108 dead, amongst the dead were 68 men"? It's implied in war and conflict that men are killed. Noting that women and children are amongst the dead tries to imply a more heinous nature to the massacre, thereby hopefully receiving more attention. It's messed up, but that fact is people pay more attention when women and children are part of the casualties.

Ok, I know this going to be unpopular but when they raise the point that 40 women and children were among the 108 dead they are pointing out that there were 40 people who the Syrian army cant realistically just call terrorists when confronted over this issue by the rest of the world. That excuse could just about fly for the male dissidents, but women and children in particular are a hard sell.

The point I'm trying to make is that in war men are generally the only combatants. anyone else is just fodder and gunning them down is inexcusable.

Until women and children are fighting on the front lines, civilian deaths will always rank highest in shock value - and even then, male civilians could be part of a militia or similar.

As a result, not sure how this is MR-related.

EDIT: And that reaction doesn't make us look militant, easily-ignored and a circlejerk at all, right?

Enough with the petty shit guys, you make the end goal here seem like a joke. Obviously theyre going to talk about the women and children deaths because the males are automatically assumed to be our enemy while others are innocent.
