Newsflash: prostate cancer kills as many men as breast cancer does women. It very much IS just as important to research.

On the topic of privilege, the Carleton University Students’ Association made a similar misguided determination back in 2008 when it cancelled its Shinerama fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis based on the incorrect suggestion that the disease “only affect white people, and primarily men.”

Prostate cancer clearly affects men rather than women, but it also affects black men more frequently than it does any other ethnicity. Black men, in fact, are more than twice as likely to die from the disease, according to Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Is Manley suggesting that we should stop wasting our time on a “not so bad” cancer that affects privileged black men?

by running with the given assertion, and making an effort to justify fundraising efforts because the disease in questions effects black men more often, the author of this response makes a mistake, in my opinion. why is it a problem to do a fundraiser for a disease that may more often effect white men than others? why did he need to justify it be asserting that black men are also, indeed moreso, impacted? that run to playing the race card, even if for a positive reason, is a problem and symptom of how much society denigrates white males. anyone looking for evidence of sexism against men or discrimination against white men...look no further. this is how much it means to be white male; to be allowed a fundraiser for a disease you suffer from, it must also significantly impact either another race or another gender.

Guys, I just think two things should be made very clear.

1) The article attacking Movember and calling prostate cancer less important than "women's cancers" was written by a man.

2) The linked article that is not only defending Movember but doing a pretty decent job of dismantling the original article is written by a woman. A feminist.

Let's also remember that this was written by a student for a crappy local paper. This is hardly the New York Times. Hell, it's not even the New York Post.

Prostate cancer: First-world problem!

I always love the "men are privileged because of average wealth" when in reality nearly all that wealth is owned by the 1%. It also ignores that the bottom cohort of men is much poorer, and has worse long term prospects, then the bottom cohort of women.

How do people even get into university with thinking as wooly as this? Shit, but that guys own argument we should stop Pinktober and instead fund women's programs in Africa. After all privileged mostly white Western female cancer sufferers don't have it as bad as black Africans.

Doesn't the Movember charity also support several research centers for testicular cancer as well? I am kind of curious about the line from fight club about suicide rates in people with testicular cancer, if it is true or not and google has not helped me at all.
