It’s a nice stark color that’s also bright and differentiates you from passersby. You’re the star. Most people aren’t in white head to toe white.

But everyday colors are red black green yellow blue etc.

Because it's about wealth not purity, the tradition only started because queen Victoria did it to show how wealthy she was to have a dress made out of lace that she only wore once. After that not wearing white wasn't saying you were unsure but said your were poor and people still don't want to be seen as poor.

i look terrible in white. will not be marrying in it. but i’m also not much of a feminist. just…. very pale and not trying to look like casper lmao

i do think white dresses are just very deeply associated with weddings, and that’s probably most of it

Of the weddings I’ve been to of my friends and family (mostly feminist) over the last 20 years, white wedding dresses were in about half of them. Personally, I got married in a pink t-shirt and jean shorts.

The white wedding dress is just some trend started by a queen, it isn’t anyone “presenting as virginal and pure”, it’s literally just a common color for wedding dresses. And in liberal areas it’s extremely common to have different colored dresses, no idea why you think “the bride always wears white”??

I've also seen a lot of feminist get married in other colors or not in dresses at all. And I know a bunch of feminist that choose not to get married because they do not like the institution. That's me. I don't think the way I love and live should be registered with the state. Fuck the state.

Which is to say, nice straw woman. It seems like you don't actually know any feminists or anything about this history of the institution and costumes you are talking about.

I don't think anyone is going to a wedding where a couple has already been living together for years and assumes the bride is a virgin because she's wearing a white dress. At this point it's just a custom. The virginity symbolism is exaggerated anyway; white dresses became popular after Queen Victoria's wedding, and at the time were more a symbol of wealth and class than virginity.

That said, I have friends who got married in gray, blue and gold. It's not all that unheard of anymore for the bride to wear a color other than white.

It’s just a dress. Most people don’t think about it in terms of patriarchy or virginity or whatever. Weddings are about celebrating yourself and your love with family and friends. It’s the party and it being something you share with everyone where everyone around you is proud and supportive of you and your partner.

All my friends had white wedding dresses. No one was a virgin. No one associates white with virginity anymore, that’s just for weirdos and idealists or religious people at this point

This is one of those gendered issues that I have no opinion on. Our wedding traditions date back to a time that is no longer representative of the world we now live in. And while the metaphors involved might no longer make sense, I can't be bothered to care about it, truth be told. Maybe thay isn't particularly helpful toward a debate, but of all the issues happening between men and women, a white wedding dress is the last thing I'm going to worry about.

It’s a relatively new tradition started by queen Victoria. Women haven’t worn white for millennia or something. They used to just wear their nicest dress or Sunday best

I'm a feminist and my husband and I didn't even have a wedding.

Edit: and no one really assumes that a bride in the white is a virgin. Plus, lots of women choose not purr white, but cream, beige, pinky, peachy etc.

I probably won't wear white for my "wedding". It's such a stark color, it'll make me look ill, lmao.

I probably won't be having a wedding either, tbh. We'll probably pop by the registry office on an impulsive whim and have a small get-together in a garden afterwards with our families and friends.

I was talking to this ultra-feminist girl and told her how I wanted to have a simple wedding, nothing grand why spend all that money on it. I was so surprised to hear her say that she wanted a huge wedding, the works. It was surprising since she is anti-capitalist, all about women working too, minimalistic living, etc.
