Discrimination while looking for a place to rent?

My parents are in the real estate business and they preferred single men. They worked, paid the rent and didn't make trouble.

It is illegal to discriminate in housing with regard to sex in the US but landlords get around that all the time.

I dunno about discrimination, but I've found that having my daughter with me while looking at rentals definitely helped in application success.

I live in Chile and have seen this a lot. Also jobs asking especifically for women where the gender couldn't possibly be less relevant - like cashier at a bakery.

It’s definitely here in the USA as well, for example, all over Los Angeles. I think they get around anti-discrimination laws if it’s for a room in a house or a second bedroom in an apartment or condo.

I can only imagine the immediate outrage that would occur if all those “no men need apply” ads turned into “no women allowed.”

The double standard is real.

Some places rent rooms so in those cases you can get by with saying women especially for college students. Now if you have a rental and advertise then you should not discriminate, and there are laws to protect. Landlords also make rules to persuade potential renters of certain criteria not to rent.. With a shortage of housing in many areas more discrimation will take place. In the US it is perfectly legal to discrimante on credit worthiness by the way.

Yes more organized and clean, atleast in the stereotypical ideals of men vs. women.

But most importantly, much easier to control and manipulate.

I used to date this girl who lived in a rented room, and her land lord (also a woman) who lived in the house was almost like her mother, and my gf just accepted being treated like that, I mean stuff like the land lord deciding what time she had to come home and not allowing me to spend the night in her room, witch my gf was obviously paying for.

Most men would never put up with this shit, and therefore are ineligible for people looking for this kind of control over their tenants.

In most 3rd world countries its standard to not rent homes to single men.I paid double the price to get one .

In the US I've mainly only heard of landlords avoiding renting to a women becuse of the perception that men are less likely to be high maintenance (will change light bulbs themselves, won't call the landlord for minor things they can fix themselves or put up with, won't come up with cutesy little emotional victim excuses if they can't come up with the rent money).

That’s so weird, I’ve had the exact opposite experience. Even with great credit and annual income as an adult woman if I want to rent an apartment without a partner of some kind I’m seen as unstable. The world is fucking weird. I hate it.

My friend moved into an apartment and the landlady probably only let him because he moved in with his sister. The landlady said that girls were cleaner. My friend and his sister spent a week cleaning the grime caked on the floor and on the countertops.

His sister was thinking of moving out, and I was looking for a place to stay so we figured I'd move in. At first the landlady was open to the idea.

A week later she didn't want to anymore, was in a hurry to sell the place, and was trying to renovate and repaint the entire apartment while my friend was still in it. She was extremely unreasonable until my friend's sister went to talk to her.

So yeah, the whole discrimination in renting against men is real and it's strong. This was in Ontario, Canada BTW (not Toronto).

I couldn’t find any affordable shared housing in Eugene Oregon that was open to men so I had to move elsewhere

I am a strong supporter for justice, regardless of sex, and consider feminism a hoax, a dictatorship, a scam.

That being said, I must add that I completely understand why would anyone prefer renting to women only or mainly...

I had renting experiences with men and unfortunately I have to say that we are selfish (we only think of our own comfort) and we live like pigs.... Many of us basically are eternal teenagers.

Disappointing and humiliating as a man.

Yep. It exists in the Philippines, too. It helps that I'm feminine and usually dress really neatly, plus I speak English really well for a Filipino, so I can bypass all the discrimination. But yeah, it's been a minor discussion in Facebook groups but landlords don't seem to care since a lot of the working class and university students are women anyway.

In Latin America also. For the same perceived reasons that they are more quiet and clean, perhaps bring less guests also. It just raises prices for men since there’s less places available.
