This is still just reactionary. It's far too late for a woman to find out when she goes to open a bank account or buy a house with a registered offender. And this is now public knowledge so abusers can manipulate a woman into buying the house in only her name so nothing is ever triggered, meanwhile you have a trail of victims including the current partner in need of expensive mental health care and likely financial assistance.

Anyone who's ever been abused or assaulted knows the danger of telling people and hearing the chorus of "you don't want to ruin his life, do you?" Can we just imagine for a second what will happen now if, god forbid, the man could potentially face actual financial consequences that would hinder his ability to abuse another woman?

The problem with the sex offenders registry and now with a DV registry is that men need to be reported and charged (and yes, the perpetrators are overwhelmingly men) which isn't going to happen with the current state of law enforcement and the victim blaming boys will be boys mentality.

They should focus more on getting these men convicted and locked up in prison. They shouldn't be free and roaming about in the first place. They should also try and work together with dating websites because often when women report abusive men on Tinder, their profiles don't even get taken down, nor shared with the police.

This is an extremely interesting idea that I never would have thought of. What I fear in a dystopian not so far future is that this will somehow be used against women to claim they assumed some sort of risk when moving in with a known offender.

Though you can’t legally consent to abuse (yet, but can’t you really if so many get off based on the woman supposedly agreeing to being strangled?) I wonder if from the damages point of view there will be an issue of assumption of risk…

Likewise, will it be able to serve men as a defense? “He is such a standup guy, everyone loves him, if he were an abuser wouldn’t he be on the registry by now? This woman is lying because their relationship has gone sour”.

Lastly, if someone has been convicted of something deemed so much of public interest to the point to warn women of them, why not just have a proper public registry? For domestic abusers. Sure, not all criminals need to be on a public list, but if child abusers are, presumably because of the risk to children outweighing their right to privacy, surely he who would abuse a woman he’s intimately involved with represents a real risk to other intimate, vulnerable individuals of the household or that may visit the household - like children.

So this is another example of privileged women having no clue about the real world whatsoever:

First off, the register idea is great (in theory) but with most ideas by privileged women in politics, it doesn’t work in practice since we don’t live in a Utopia

It relies on the abuser having the intention to inform the government he’s seeing someone new, which we all know is wishful thinking at best , especially in our casual dating culture

These women clearly haven’t spent time in working class areas to know what goes on there

Because violent men with records aren’t fond of honesty & will pull all sorts of tricks to hide their pasts and identity

For this reason, I’d stay suspicious of men with names that don’t fit their background or seem off especially if they’ve scrubbed themselves off the internet & are extremely secretive- aka keep a low profile, no local ties or try to isolate you with him… paranoid about technology / social media or you talking to locals 🚩

This reminds me of the sex offenders registry loophole - many sex offenders and child abusers especially have managed to find new victims and stay under the radar by legally changing their name for £40

Now you’d think the government would have some sort of alert system for when registered sex offenders try to change their name so they can stop them or update their files….but they don’t

I wonder why that is? Probably because they don’t want offenders with high profile careers like law or politics being ousted

The government relies on the kind hearts of registered pedophiles to inform them of their new name change- why would a pedophile want to do this? Especially if he’s getting a new job ?

This is how many pedophiles stay under the radar and get access to jobs near children etc because they changed their name and so fell off the registry

This has been brought up numerous times and no real action has been taken yet

If they don’t alert authorities about their new name change in 3 days they can face up to five years in jail…but this relies on the offender alerting authorities which we know they’re not going to do

In working class areas full of violent men….most people are renting so what measures are in place for that?

What happens if a man is renting and moves a new woman in off record? What then?

(Abusers are fond of renting, moving around a lot and moving victims in fast or to remote areas so they can isolate them)

Many people are cohabiting and not sharing bank accounts these days either

Until the government does something about these loopholes. These measures are fairly pointless

They need to create an automated alert system for when domestic abusers try to change their name. That either forbids them from doing so or updates the registry by default & raises a red flag/ further investigation.

And we need an open accessible registry database so we can cross check these name changes & location changes.

That way when a domestic abuser enters a new relationship, his partner can find out herself.

Because you don’t rely on violent woman beating criminals to tell the truth. The fuck?

They should also be informing their place of work in case he targets women there, since he’s at high risk or reoffending & those women are in danger.

Oh and his movements should be prohibited/ tracked re travelling abroad. Since he becomes a danger to women abroad as well.

When grace millanes killer was caught (he was a British National living abroad in New Zealand) it turned out he had also raped another woman prior and had another domestic violence case.

He had raped another woman 8 months before she was killed.

So he already had a history & was known as high risk. That death was preventable.

This is why the law should start taking rape accusations seriously, barely any of them get sentenced (1.3% in the U.K.).

It's a step. Obviously, 98% of domestic abusers are going to fly under the radar. The only thing that will change this is the mass, wholesale move of society to caring about girls and women. Can you imagine? It won't happen. At this stage - a women gets raped and she's most likely lying and nobody will believe her. A man rapes a woman, he gets caught (so, so, so, so, so, so so rare - did I put enough sos' there? -not sure) and all he needs to do is cry that his future is ruined because he raped a women and he gets six months max - this is the WORST CASE scenario for men. The most case is they go unseen, unheard and unpunished but let's just forget the millions of women around the world who report similar experiences of domestic abuse because they MUST be LIARS. This is why a register won't work - most abusers don't even make any register EVER and they don't think they are abusing - they are your neighbour, teacher, cousin, brother, grocer, uber guy, father, labourer - and they aren't on any register. Most women know this. But this will at least make some pause before they offend. I view it as a positive much like I'd view knowing sharks are in the ocean before I swim, as a positive service announcement. Stay safe. xo

A pickme is alerted that her creep is an abuser but he swears his crazy ex made everything up and he was wrongfully charged. Her friends love him, so do her parents, so she chooses to continue the relationship. In time the mask slips and he assaults her. Everyone blames her, she should have known better. The cops blame her, she has no standing in court, CPS takes the kids because she failed to protect them. Creep guy gets compassion for his violent relapse, because you know, he is a victim too.

Registries make me nervous because it sets precedent for social credit systems. They are also unhelpful because what women in DV situations need are safe affordable and anonymous places to live, access to immediate private financial independence, and a system that supports believing women and allowing them to protect their children and maintain custody. Also restraining orders without 90 loopholes and prerequisites.

This does however remind me of an app that existed several years ago called like Lulu or Lola or something like that where women could post and rate their dates and warn other women if men were cheaters or had stds or were abusive etc. and men sued the creators and got it banned because it was defamatory and “women will use it to lie”. Meanwhile men are still allowed to take nudes and share them on Reddit and send them to prospective employers etc.

Unbelievable how the system protects abusive men.

Question, so this whole new strategy doesn't tie up with UK's preexisting laws? I'm not really familiar with UK so I'm really curious.

If this has been suggested in our country, this will be a total failure. Most women here, especially moms, uses their husband's account. There is no such thing as joint account. I mean, its being offered but most here just uses one bank account in one household.

I also don’t agree with banks being privy to people’s criminal records and being the stewards of such information.

These records should be government-administered and maintained.

A public registry will backfire on victims- courts and police often label them as the abuser and they could end up on the registry. and what happens if a victim doesn't break up with they guy as soon as they hear they are on the registry? everyone will say "you knew he was bad"
