As a unapologetic gender egalitarian and body autonomy supporter, let me say clearly: discrimination and prejudice against gay men is reprehensible and condemnable because homophobia and Misandry are reprehensible and condemnable.

Gay men are our brothers just as lesbians are our fellow sisters. Leaving politics aside, that is a statement of fact.

It is sad to see tradcons discriminate against our brothers of any sexuality.

Covid has revealed a lot of monsters in our society, as OP rightfully points out. It is as predictable as it is tiring but society has to explicitly discuss it honestly, and I'm glad OP has stepped forward and done so

Why is monkey pox being treated like an STD by the public in the first place? From what I have read, it’s transmissible in many different ways, including through airborne particles, not just physical contact with lesions and bodily fluids. It would be kind of like calling chickenpox or the flu or even COVID an STD.

I mean I have also seen the statistics indicating that men who have sex with men appear to be affected more than the general population, so I’m assuming that’s leading people to assume it is sexually-transmitted. But children are getting it, too. I am curious how the data behind those statistics are gathered. Pointing at the LGBT+ community and gay men specifically seems like a bullshit culture war red herring to me. Bigots will use any excuse to spew homophobic bile wherever they go. I can only hope that if those statistics are accurate then it will help regions prioritize resources to help men get the healthcare they need (but I’m not holding my breath…).

Genuine question. I would welcome anyone with some relevant expertise to ELI5.

While I think it does not warrant any homophobia and such against gay and bi men, it does highlight the fact that even in 2022 a lot of Gay/Bi men still have dangerous sexual habits that might need to be addressed. Live and let live is fine and dandy until something like this happens and it results in a public health crisis.

Absolutely. Any discrimination and demonisation of LGBTQ+ people is absolutely unacceptable. That was one of the main reasons why I wasn't part of the MRA movement for quite some time. I was always extremely supportive of LGBT rights and a lot of homophobia in many MRA circles really put me off.

The timing of monkeypox is admittedly terribly inconvenient - we were already dealing with massive attacks on LGBT rights in the United States, and then along comes this disease that disproportionately affects men who have sex with men!

I'd refrain from linking the two events in your head too much. Reactionaries try their hardest to capture the government and roll back the clock on social issues, but they can't completely undo the change in public opinion since gay marriage became legal nationwide. I think homophobic hate crimes will remain a rare event.

what is the scientifc proof or evidence that it affects men and gay men a lot more?? it seems like bad sampling where they happen to interview more gay people than straight people or the government starting an “AIDS epidemic scare” all over again against the gay community

Part of this is just feminists misunderstanding how English works. If you break all of the support columns of the building you stand in, you deserve to have a building fall on your head. A person who pets every animal they meet deserves to get bitten. "Deserve" doesn't always refer to a moral culpability sort of 'ought', but rather a sense that luck 'ought' more or less equalize over the long term: which it does. Deserve can refer to moral culpability, and often does, particularly in this context, but not always. Confusion on this point has caused feminists to see intent in critical responses to the actions of some sexual assault victims where there is none.

People who have orgies with other people who have orgies have found a great way to end up with diseases that spread through persistent contact with bodily fluids. It is indeed gross because this has always been a good way to catch a disease, and right now is a high-risk time for that. People who say that even saying that much is homophobic are perverted.

And yeah, humanity is really quite bad at affirming unfashionable life choices and adopting rigid stereotypes. The application of those stereotypes will result in senseless antagonism towards gay people, and also blinkered anatagonism to those who criticize a flawed unsafe culture. Haters gonna hate.
