I find it sad that a lot of guys can't figure out for themselves what they want to do with their lives. Add in the lack of good role models (both male and female) and a lot of these guys think that a relationship will solve all their issues and fulfill the emptiness inside.

[–]RatDontPanic 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I find it sad that a lot of guys can't figure out for themselves what they want to do with their lives.

Same is true for a lot of women. The hidden problem that the media doesn't want to talk about.

[–]Stargazer1919 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I don't think that it's not talked about. It's just that it used to be women didn't have a life if they weren't with a guy. It was always like that. Men had the freedom to do as they liked.

Now it's just one of those things that isn't paid attention to much anymore. Because what women are supposed to do with their lives, the ideals have changed. Our lives don't revolve around men anymore, thanks to feminism. And if any woman expresses unhappiness with her life because she's single, everyone is like "girl you don't need a man!" Thanks again to feminism.

[–]RatDontPanic 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not just dating that I'm talking about, I think women slackers and NEETs are also more prevalent than the media is talking about.

[–]Stargazer1919 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They definitely do exist. Honestly I've met some women like that. They tend to pop out a couple of kids, or cling to a boyfriend, and don't do much with their lives. I think this is why some women get involved in MLM's, they are preyed upon by the pyramid scheme.

Just my anecdotes.

[–]SeliciousSedicious 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Old post but no, women don’t seem to be any more happy with this currently relationship phobic culture than men. The vocal bit of it just seems to either be louder or more quiet about that bit with media seeming to focus more on men(probably because they are the more vocal ones.

in reality, loneliness rates between men and women are pretty much equal and both on the rise and virginity rates are in a similar narrow disparity and also rising for both genders. The problem definitely isn’t a solo gender one and I think it has less to do with it being a symbol of women’s rights or being representative of that at all(which has been on the rise for many decades without loneliness rates skyrocketing). And more to do with an over reliance on technology, social media, dating apps, and a society increasingly focused on instant gratification.

And it makes sense too, we’re very social creatures coming into an increasingly antisocial world. We didn’t pair up before because of finances, we did it because we are at our core social animals. We’re closer to the guinea pig or rabbit than we are the cat.

I like that the article brings this up the need for a more healthy dating culture and it's something that I think it's super necessary but not discussed nearly enough.

Because I'm not thrilled with the way the conversation is currently going.

It feels like the rise of awful ideologies like the red pill, black pill and exploitative industries like pick up artistry have very loudly exposed the fact a lot of us (especially us in the USA) that we aren't doing much of anything to promote a healthy dating culture.

That's gotta change!

[–]Naus1987 24 points25 points26 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’ve never been a fan of hook-up culture. But as an asexual I’m pretty biased lol!!!

It does feel like in general dating has gotten more toxic. I do feel biggest contributing factor is the rise of entitlement and the search for perfection.

A good relationship requires a lot of compromise. And when people are told they don’t need to compromise it just leads to no one being happy.

I used to think people were smart enough not to get suckered into what the media says, but the amount of guys I see in this very sub blantantly admitting that they swallow everything a random YouTuber says certainly makes me question that.

I don’t want to call those guys dumb, but I really wish there was a lot more critical thinking involved when it came to swallowing information wholesale.

[–]Alternative-Skill167 16 points17 points18 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I wonder how many incels or red pillers are jaded and that way because their relationships with women didn’t work out because they didn’t put in any work toward their mental and emotional health, or were with women who had issues themselves or both. And both sides swear each other off because of bad experiences.

Looking for a partner with healthy mental/emotional state of mind is important and something I’m now more aware of myself

[–]MouseCloudess 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Based on my experience on purplepilldebate sub, that is indeed nearly all of them, yes.

[–]JonF1 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Language like this is part of the problem i feel. It's not that a man may not be able to at that moment of time of expressing emotions in more healthy ways or sneaking the mental help (which is extremely hard in the US), its a personal failure of the lack of effort to. It ties into the stereotype of hypermasculinity that men are never allowed to be victims and thus owed absolutely no sympathy.

It's especially cruel when you realize that more or elss the past centirues the rules of accepted male expression have just been shut the fuck up and deal with it, so as meany are just trying for really the first time to be vluerable, any mistake is met with little grace. It's a big reason why people just double down redpill ideology as on a balance of probability being emotionally unenviable and sotic is works out far more often for men than otherwise.

[–]uniquename1992 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think what is lacking in modern dating is positive modeling. If a man wants a life-long partner, he needs to see it in order to make it happen himself. However, not a lot of people have a happy family where they can model that from their parents. On the other hand, we see a glimpse of negative modeling like PUA

[–]RatDontPanic 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't forget FDS. FDS is poisoning a lot of women just like The Rules used to do.

[–]ShittyHuman1999 29 points30 points31 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Men were single and lonely back then as well. Don't know why people think that everything was good in past.

[–]Yalahabibi6969 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah TRP want to go the “caveman times” when in reality those “caveman” where no different from us they are humans who have Empathy and caring to the weak ones not some Barbaric brute who goes around and raped some women and leaving that kid to a beta.

[–]whenth3bowbreaks 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Caveman days" is totally made up.

[–]FINDarkside 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The research linked in the article actually shows that nowadays it's women who are more lonely. Most of the article isn't based on any real research anyway, it's based on authors tiktok followers experiences :D Graph of the loneliness research

[–]GoodSilhouette 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Your graph appears to be referencing loneliness at schools? And it also uses the term "girls"and "boys" not women and men which makes ms think its talking about sub-college age teens or even kids.

[–]FINDarkside 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

True, that doesn't actually seem to be the research the article links to. Not really sure how I ended up in that. This pic is actually from the paper used for the claim that "Younger and middle-aged men are the loneliest they’ve ever been in generations, and it’s probably going to get worse."

Note that that research didn't have any historical data, so "loneliest they’ve ever been in generations" isn't something the research actually claimed. Either way, all of the "men not meeting womens standards" is still based solely on authors tiktok lives.

[–]GoodSilhouette 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not even going to pretend I comprehend whats going on in those graphs. Psychology today isn't vigorous by any means so wouldn't be shocked either way.

[–]uniquename1992 28 points29 points30 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

does lonely mean not happily single only in this context or just single? being single doesn't have the negative connotation as "lonely" does

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

That's what I was wondering. The manosphere aside, are these single men actually unhappy?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

As a guy who doesn’t “have to” live alone but chooses to do so while exercising my options whenever I feel like …I’m not unhappy, I’m content

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good for you. I hope you stay happy & content always no matter your relationship status

[–]anubhav23 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How did you do it? Do you have many hobbies?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I do have a few hobbies , most of which take up a lot of time & concentration in order to execute properly… but when I realized not being alone or in a relationship or whatever isn’t what my inner self truly desired, things became much more clear. You maybe someone who really needs companionship, everyone is different. Unfortunately there’s no one size fits all to this problem , you have to figure your wants & needs out & don’t be afraid to try new things

[–]FINDarkside 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

The research the article refers to actually show that women have surpassed men in loneliness. (image) Conveniently the author doesn't mention this, but just says that male loneliness has rised. The part about women raising their standards is also not part of the research, but the article writer using his tiktok live streams as source.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Why the low quality info gets viral?

[–]AntiVictimhood 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

My firs thought, where is the evidence? He's making assertions but failing to support the bulk of his claims.

This guy has a TikTok live show where women vent about their dating challenges. Is that his data set? I'm confused where he's pulling this data from.

His first link to the Pew Research states that "The growth in the single population is driven mainly by the decline in marriage among adults who are at prime working age."

So it's not that men have shitty mental health, it's that people aren't getting married as early or as often. "While the unpartnered population includes some adults who were previously married (those who are separated, divorced or widowed), all of the growth in the unpartnered population since 1990 has come from a rise in the number who have never been married."- Pew study.

Secondly, 50% of the population is female, 50% is male- and we live in a monogamous society (you can't marry multiple people where I'm from), and being poly is still a tiny community of people. So if there is this rise of single hetero lonely men, aren't there a commensurate number of single hetero women? This is a point that always confuses me.

Third, the author completely failed to mention the social context which plays a big role in explaining modern dating. Which is that people are getting married later, women can be economically independent and no longer require a pair-bond to be financially stable so they can choose a partner who is a good fit not just a provider. Women are becoming more educated than men and it's well documented that the majority of women would prefer a partner with a similar education/income level. Given the economy, most families are dual-income so women need to prioritize their career as well and may have less interest in casual dating when there are competing priorities.

The Pew study that he cites says "Unpartnered adults have lower earnings, on average, than partnered adults and are less likely to be employed or economically independent. They also have lower educational attainment and are more likely to live with their parents"

Okay so it's not men's bad communication skills and mental health, it's that they're broke, uneducated, and living at home. Yeah, not a very appealing romantic prospect to anyone... Why does the author keep coming back to mental health and poor communication skills when that point isn't supported in any of the primary research?

Pew study again saying, "In a 2017 Pew Research Center survey, 71% of U.S. adults said being able to support a family financially is very important for a man to be a good spouse or partner. Similar shares of men and women said this."

So it's finances..... Not communication skills based on the primary research this author cited.... So why is he making the case that men just need therapy instead of better paying jobs? Why is that his conclusion? Hmm I wonder.

"How can men reap the benefit of the algorithms? Level up your mental health game. That means getting into some individual therapy to address your skills gap."

Oh wow. Who would have guessed? A therapist saying that the secret to getting into a loving relationship is simply therapy. I have encountered way too many bullshit therapists to be persuaded by this point. It also 100% fails to address the very real qualities that make it harder for people to get dates. And "reap the benefits of the algorithm"? I find it interesting that a therapist is encouraging dudes to game the algorithm rather than get out into the world, move off of online dating (if he's saying that men have few chances anyways), and develop communication and charisma to connect with women irl.

I don't like that dismissive attitude that asserts if you just "work on yourself and love yourself" that your issues will be resolved. That fails to consider the broader factors of why people have challenges with dating.

Additionally, the economically marginalized dudes who are struggling the most to get into relationships because they lack any form of financial stability which is often a requisite to attract partners (and no, you don't need to earn 6 figures but being gainfully employed and having a disposal income to actually go on dates and go out is usually required for dating) romantic prospect are probably not going to have an easy time accessing therapy! An average therapist in my city is 180$/hour. Why is there no discussion of how inaccessible that solution is? And what a slap in the face to the people who are stable and well adjusted but just broke, ugly, and awkward?

A blanket fix to a diverse problem is frankly stupid imo. And this article lacks the kind of empirical support I'd need to see to be persuaded by a lot of his claims.

[–]debatelord_1 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it's also important to add that relationship skills probably require actual relationship experience. Yeah a therapist might try to give you some helpful tools, but you ultimately can't teach someone to swim on land.

You can know all the swimming techniques, but you still need to actually jump in the water and swim at some point.

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Very well said. I didn't even catch all the issues until you pointed them out. This article sounds like a shallow patronizing pseudoscience opinion-piece. Therapy is unaffordable for most Americans and it is so dismissive for someone to say "just get therapy" as if all your problems will be magically solved. I have NOT been impressed with the therapy sessions I attempted. I wish everyone best wishes to benefit from therapy, but I find it hard to believe that someone whose job is to sit and listen to me about my problems without offering any insights is going to fix my issues.

[–]RatDontPanic 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Secondly, 50% of the population is female, 50% is male- and we live in a monogamous society (you can't marry multiple people where I'm from), and being poly is still a tiny community of people. So if there is this rise of single hetero lonely men, aren't there a commensurate number of single hetero women? This is a point that always confuses me.

I gotta nitpick this part. One man can have several wives - as in marry one, divorce her, then marry another. Donald Trump has had 3 wives. Women generally do not remarry.

There's your disparity right there.

[–]AntiVictimhood 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

But the data is about who is currently partnered when they were surveyed. Not who has been married and divorced.

Trump wasn't married to three women simultaneously.

They were either single or in relationships with other men- consequently taking 2 men out of "single" status if both Trump's future/past wives were with other men at the time.

Additionally, the gender gap in remarriage isn't really that significant (I guess that depends on what one considers significant though). Men are on average 10% more likely to remarry than women.

The questions remains, how can there be an epidemic of single hetero men when there is a commensurate number of single hetero women since a man isn't married or monogamously partnered with multiple women simultaneously? Genuine question that I don't even see explained in datasets that reference this reported gap.

[–]RatDontPanic 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Who knows, maybe it's an error in self-reporting?

[–]AntiVictimhood 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah or the other possibility is that since the age group measured and reported on is 25-54, maybe the women in that group are pairing with men over the age of 54 and consequently those men fall into another demographic?

Since 98% of age gap relationships that exceed a decade have an older man and younger woman, that was my other guess. That some percentage of the ladies between 25-54 are dating men over 54 who are captured in the next age grouping.

[–]RatDontPanic 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That is also quite possible.

[–]waffleznstuff30 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

I think it's a culture shift in some regards. Maybe the female version of MGTOW. Since a lot of men do not have basic life skills and emotional maturity. Sure you can work a decent job but can you communicate to someone your intentions instead of being sleazy and leading on people. Or do housework because you both live in the same house. Or go do that thing your partner wanted to do because it means a lot to them even though you don't want to.

But in all honesty men do need to change and work and develop emotional maturity. Since just providing and protecting isn't just the role in a relationship. There are so many things and labor that goes into a healthy partnership. There is compromise, communication, sometimes healthy criticism, valuing your partner on both sides. A lot of men take their connections for granted or don't continuously contribute to the relationship. Instead of neglecting it.

I think because women do not "need" a man. We want a man. But the issue is men aren't being partners women want. Go to Therapy to work on self confidence and healthy communication developing life skills and learning what women want from someone.

[–]Gilmoregirlin 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I agree with this. And women get a lot of their emotional and other l needs met by their friends. I have said this many times, the type of friendships that women have with their friends is so much different that the type that most men have with their friends. Most men only do that type of bonding with their romantic partners, hence men being so much lonelier and women not needing to fill that need. I am recently separated from my husband (it was not good) and I had to have emergency surgery. I had female friends surround me, literally to physically take care of me, stay at my home, cook for me, change my bandages, hold me when I was crying, to emotionally support me every step of the way. My ex? Well. . . I am not sure who he would have and he's not unique.

[–]JonF1 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

I don't think its from a lack of emotional connection with other men at any point, I just think they tend to get thrown out as soon as work or relationships start which is sad. I think the "advantage" that women have is these connections have lower barriers so when they lose friends from those things they are sort of easily replaced. On the other hand I know plenty of guys who basically fall off the face of the earth as soon as they get engaged and basically vanish from history as soon as kids get involved.

I think what has done my dad well is that he was able to keep up with a lot of his friends through reaching me and my brother. And my dad worked a lot and is very committed to my mom, there's only really been one "argument" that i know of and i barely lasted a week after marriage canceling.

I just see it a lot with people I honestly thought were friends but I don't know anymore as we all graduate. I try to hit them up even once and they will respond months later in a tone of annoyance that i spoiled 20 seconds of their day asking how they are doing and if they want to talk for a bit.

[–]Gilmoregirlin 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

My four best female friends, I have know or 30, 15, 23 and 20 years and I think if you ask most women their female friends are long term. Two have kids and are married, two don’t. I don’t have kids. I don’t think I am in the minority and I don’t think that we have lower barriers or that they are easily replaced. I think our connections are stronger and they are different So we make the effort to maintain he bonds and they are harder to break. They don’t consist of just hanging out of having superficial conversations. I have had this conversation with several of my male colleagues in their 40s.I asked them how many friends they have and most would say five or ten, that’s good. But then I would ask how many people could you could you call if you were upset and crying? If you were really sick and needed someone to one stay? If you needed a place to stay? If you were depressed in the middle of the night? Some responses went down to zero.

Loneliness is not defined by the good times, it’s defined by the bad ones. And I think that’s the issue. I hope men can get better at this and some men are actually quite good at it but there are some very lonely men out there And its sad.

[–]JonF1 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hmm I see. Thanks for sharing!

I'm in a weird situation. Two years ago I suffered from as stroke despite just now being 23 so I'd say I lost most of my friends, guys or girls from that. The finishing blows for the rest was college graduation where people just vanish and act like they don't know you anymore.

I I know two guys who would give me a place to stay if i hit a rough patch. I only really have one lady friend I keep up with anymore. I have other friends but its like a high one every two months sort of deal.

[–]JerriLaMan1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

But then I would ask how many people could you could you call if you were upset and crying? If you were really sick and needed someone to one stay? If you needed a place to stay? If you were depressed in the middle of the night?

This is emotional labour. This is a bad thing. My friends a re dealing with their own shit the last thing I need is for them to shoulder my shit as well

[–]Gilmoregirlin 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No this is true friendship. You have been given the wrong answer. Are you receiving this answer from other men, or from women you are trying to date? Your therapist should not be coming to your home to care for you when you are sick, you should not be staying at your therapist's home if you need somewhere to stay. Now if you are calling people in the middle of the night every night then yes you need to seek therapy, but friends, real friends are to be there to support you during the hard times. That's what friends do.

The people that have told men this are the women who go on first second and third dates with men or who are trying to develop relationships with them and men try to dump their entire emotional lives on them. I am speaking of male to male friendships. Men do not feel vulnerable enough around other men to develop these friends with other men, women do.

[–]JerriLaMan1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

Are you receiving this answer from other men, or from women you are trying to date?

Mainly people online. I just know your shouldn't really be vulnerable with people (especially women) because that it's emotional labour

Men do not feel vulnerable enough around other men to develop these friends with other men

Yes I do. Why do you generalise men like that? I was taught not to generalise people

[–]Gilmoregirlin 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's the problem. You don't make friends online, get out and make some friends in person. You just said above that you know that you should not be vulnerable around people but then tell me not to generalize that men don't feel vulnerable around other men lol. Studies show that men do not feel comfortable being vulnerable around other men not generalizing. You need to get out and develop friendships in real life, and be vulnerable around more people, you will be less lonely. Good luck.

[–]One_Neferi37181 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

As if it an easy thing to do. You sounded like those who tell a fat person to go exercise and eat salad and you will be skinny in no time.

Men were never been taught how to communicate their feelings ever, also men stopped caring about their friends' feelings at young age because they faced hard time when they did by the society and so they're not emotionally matured. The only men who make better partners in my experience are the ones who were lucky enough to had girlfriend at a young age.

You can't teach people how to be emotionally matured. You have to experience it, you need to feel it. You might learn a thing or two but you're not sure why you should behave(act or say) this way. A lot of men say mean things then apologize when they see their partner is hurt but still have no idea what they did wrong.

Most matured men in my university studies are

  • men who had a healthy relationship with their emotionally matured father
  • men who had experiences with women at a young age
  • men who have children
  • men who had certain dramatic experience
  • men who smoke weed not for recreational purposes

I think it will take time a general cultural shift in attitudes towards men expressing their feelings and having their feelings validated. It's not a wake up and you lose weight from eating healthy it's a process. I think a lot of push back from this is from other men ironically. You get a plethora of "Alpha" male content because somehow masculinity is under attack. That god forbid men actually work on their emotional development as people too. Have unaddressed trauma tended too. That should be worked through and understood.

I can sympathize with men on this. Because society by and large enforces the tough strong stoic male stereotype. Boys don't cry. Men don't feel hurt. Thus what comes out of this is emotionally stunted, and immature men. And you get faced with the backlash ridiculed for this because weakness and not living up to those expectations. And for men failure is not an option.

I think this general disdain has caused a gap in relationships because women feel unheard or taken for granted or hurt by men. And men feel ostracized and can't really relate thus resorting to toxic behaviors. And you get the "nice guy" syndrome because expressing any sort of kindness should be rewarded. Not a behavior you should just do.

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

But the issue is men aren't being partners women want.

Lol, men have never been the partners women want in any time period. This says more about women than it does about men.

[–]waffleznstuff30 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Agreeable.

But women historically needed men to do anything. Being unmarried would lead to a lot of disadvantages you couldn't have a bank account and societally were expected to marry if you didn't something was wrong . So regardless if they were a piece of crap, abusive, unfaithful, lazy you were obligated to be married to this person no matter how miserable you are and toxic your relationship is since divorce was frowned upon

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Correct. And without being forced to marry a man for survival it's not surprising if more women abstain. This is a good thing. I'm not sure there's anything men can do to make themselves more appealing. I could be wrong,

As a woman, this stuck out to me, "How can men reap the benefit of the algorithms? Level up your mental health game. That means getting into some individual therapy to address your skills gap. It means valuing your own internal world and respecting your ideas enough to communicate them effectively. It means seeing intimacy, romance, and emotional connection as worthy of your time and effort. Open communication is so fucking sexy. It helps me not to work so hard to get shit outta you when we know you have things to say, it helps me get to know you better, helps us not waste your time, and so much more. I loooooove men that are good at communicating and who are honest.

[–]JonF1 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

A few things. Individual therapy is expensive and finding a therapist that works for you is a very exhaustive process especially if you don't have have much of an idea of what is explicitly wrong with yourself.

I wouldn't really say the average woman has better mental health skill, just outside of things such as borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorders its more accepted for women to be struggling with mental health in general. TO me, it appears that a woman who has depression is seen as a victim, a man who has depression is seen as pathetic.

With open communication it supper depends. Many women complain about ther husbands and or boyfriends emtoinally dumping depsite the man feeling lioke he's bnaying saying much and is actuallying holding back a much larger malstrom of negative emotion. This is why for a lot of men it is so much easier to just to say nothing about that stuff at all because when the line is crost often the entire relationship now faces significant danger which can just compound on the problems (oftentimes is emotional lonesomeness).

[–]Graywing84 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The root of those issues were started by men. The patriarchy always held "stoicism" in high regard. I have been in therapy since my freshman year of freshman year of college. It's been 20 years and I still go to my weekly therapy visit. My father who was the son of a Korean war vet ridiculed me for going. My mother didn't. When I talk with my friends about therapy it was always the women in my friendship circle that was supportive. The guys always had trouble connecting to someone who would constantly go to a therapist and thought that with therapy you go for a few months then you're cured. It was men who told other men that therapy is not masculine. It's going to have to be men to tell men otherwise. I also worked with some groups for group therapy for anxiety and many of the young men in our groups had beliefs that align with the black and red pill ideologies. What I found interesting is that while some of them were bullied by both men and women they always held more anger towards the women and just pretty much thought that being bullied by guys was normal. And it's true that many men emotionally dump on their significant others. A partner is not a therapist. I do have some hard times but I don't expect my partner to shoulder it all. That's why I still go to therapy so I can work on myself. While therapy can be expensive there are some counseling services that can be found via online and do sliding scale for payments. The whole women seen as a victim for depression was also started by men(see stoicism). Men are not allowed to cry or have feelings but it was men who set that narrative. Just like when I took my first step into a healthier mindset(which once I got out of college I had to pay out of pocket), other men will have to do the same and we cannot expect women to lead us by the hand.

O'rlamente? So why is it that Study suggests mothers, not fathers, have a "boys don't cry" mentality? Surely if it was the Patriarchy men would have this bias at least as much or more than women.

Also if you're going to say "your source sucks!" at least provide a counter source?

[–]JerriLaMan1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

A few things. Individual therapy is expensive and finding a therapist that works for you is a very exhaustive process especially if you don't have have much of an idea of what is explicitly wrong with yourself.

Totally ignoring this first part. People say 'go to therapy' like it's something you can just go down to the shops and buy. For a lot of people it's hard to access because either their insurance doesn't cover it, it's too expensive to pay for our of pocket, or government cuts have eroded what mental health systems were in place

Even in my country with free healthcare the waiting lists are months or sometimes even years long. And what if you don't click with that therapist, then you have to wait a couple more months or years

Blaming this problem solely on men and stocicism reeks of toxic masculinity and an inability to see men as victims

[–]Graywing84 -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Where else would the responsibility of men's mental health be placed at? Not talking about children as that is the responsibility of both parents. This is for adults(which is why I said men). If individual therapy is too expensive why not try group? There's even online therapists that are available. Or just plain old support groups. Either way there are other avenues for mental health if you can't get access to a therapist for some time. Toxic masculinity has nothing to do with what I said as stoicism is a trait of toxic masculinity. Telling people to seek mental help is not a bad thing as it is not an individual's job to mentally treat you. Getting a therapist can be hard depending where you live but once again that is a societal issue not the individual. What do you think the alternative to seeking therapy should be? You state that's it's expensive and hard to come by but you don't mention any other avenues. How do you think you're going to start working on improving you're mental health if you don't keep trying. I've done one on one counseling, group counseling, support groups and online therapy via zoom. There are many ways to get mental health. You have to keep trying even if you don't click with that therapist you can ask them for references to other ones. It's the individual's responsibility to seek and improve their mental health. Yes we can blame society for lack of facilities but that doesn't change that you are responsible for taking that step to improvement. Again as you state issues with trying to get a therapist have you tried any alternatives?

[–]datinginour30s1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Ah yeah, it is psychology today so it’s biased. I think therapists are optional, it could just be personal research and adjustments which in a twisted way is what TRP is trying to be

To each his own. Good for the extroverted men who can do this.

It means seeing intimacy, romance, and emotional connection as worthy of your time and effort.

It's not worthy of my time & effort. I have more rewarding things to do with my time that give more benefit for the same effort. Why not just admit (this is directed at the author, not at you) that women aren't that much into men.

[–]TheVillagePriestess1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (8 children) | Copy Link

Why not just admit (this is directed at the author, not at you) that women aren't that much into men.

Because then you box in the women that are into men incorrectly. Again, people aren't the same. Each person has their own level of desire, their own level of libido, their own ways of handling that, their own preferences for relationship structure, etc. When you say "women", that's too broad of a label.

But I can tell you that after having 4 potential partners try to secretly install spyware on my phone, my desire to not date, isn't me being into men. It's men who have zero concept of boundaries and do this kind of shit. I shouldn't have to pay for 2 phones just to keep dates outta my shit. Good men have these schmucks dirtying up the pool.

I’m not denying the diversity of women. But on average women aren’t as much into men as vice versa. The article is falsely attributing this to men’s lack of communication skill, when even if every man was a top notch communicator it isn’t going to make women interested in them.

[–]TheVillagePriestess1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link

I'm not totally sure we're reading the same stuff, or at least focusing on the same parts. When I read "Men have a key role in this transformation but only if they go all-in. It’s going to take that kind of commitment to themselves, to their own mental health, to the kind of love they want to generate in this world", this means to me that they are being called to lead the bunch by putting your money where your mouth is basically. I don't see anything about men still not being desired even if they're top notch communicators. Can you show me where you're at? I truly want to understand your perspective if you're willing to have a good faith discussion. I'm a woman, so mabye I can help with perspectives if you want it.

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I'm saying the article is falsely attributing cause without data to support it. If the number of single men is growing, so is the number of single women. How is the article concluding that trend can be reversed if only men do X and Y and Z? It is just an opinion piece with no science. How do we know that the trend is not caused by the very real differences in desire levels between men and women?

Edit: How do we know the cause isn't biological rather than sociological ?

Ok, I read the study. My take away is that loneliness increases with individualistic cultures, decreases with age and men are lonelier than women. Ok, what does this have to do with men's communication skills or dating ?

[–]Meruem-x-Meruem 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The article literally says that women aren’t into men as much, but that doesn’t mean they don’t find men sexy/desirable anymore, the info you’re leaving out is that they’re not into as much men because a large portion of men they encounter don’t meet the rising communication/etc standards. Women are not as interested anymore because they expect better and aren’t wasting their time and energy on looking as much, because of how often they’re disappointed.

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal -5 points-4 points-3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

they’re not into as much men because a large portion of men they encounter don’t meet the rising communication/etc standards.

They’re not as much into men, period. I disagree with attributing it to men's lack of communication. That is just a scapegoat. As more women gain financial independence (which is a good thing) they no longer have to feign an interest in men. In the past they were forced to marry a man just to survive. Now they don't have to. Good for them. No need to scapegoat men for that.

[–]Meruem-x-Meruem 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree with what you’re saying I’m just saying there’s more to it than that. It’s not like hetero women are now less hetero lol, or that they’re asexual or something. They would gladly include a man into their life if the man added to their life’s happiness instead of subtracted from it. Many aren’t interested anymore because time and again the men they’ve dated ended up net-subtracting from their life. It takes a lot of emotional labour to be with someone you can’t really communicate with who doesn’t see the problem nor wants to change. So the women just give up. It’s not that they don’t want to, is my point. It’s that most of what’s available to them is not worth the hassle.

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s not like Herero women are now less hetero lol, or that they’re asexual or something.

Are you sure? My own suspicion is that most hetero women are actually asexual or lesbian. It's just that most women don't bother declaring their sexuality. We don't really know the true number of people who might identify as asexual or lesbian if the world was 100% accepting of differences. It would not surprise me if the number of hetero men greatly outnumbered the number of hetero women. I got laughed at yesterday by a lesbian lady in this sub when I suggested this hypothesis, but the number of people willing to identify as LGBT grows every year. Who is to say most women may not identify as LGBT in another 50 years? Most of our strongly held beliefs are just assumptions.

Edit:

because time and again the men they’ve dated ended up net-subtracting from their life.

Are you saying that women on average are fundamentally better people than men? If so, just say that instead of beating about the bush. I for one, will not be offended as a man.

  1. More boys are born than girls, there's gonna be single guys
  2. Single doesn't mean lonely, doesn't mean it wasn't by choice.
  3. Being on such an app doesn't mean they aren't in a relationship, or that relationship is what they are after.
  4. That there are not as many women on there doesn't mean they don't have difficulty finding someone. Putting out a profile may be a scary thing for a woman. (An online stalker once found a woman through images reflected in her eye, then raped her.)
  5. Most couples find each other through friends<work<club/pub----<dating apps is low on the list.

That's about it for my thoughts.

[–]2020mademejoinreddit 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This article assumes that everyone is "forced" to be alone. Instead of admitting that there are those who choose to be by themselves.

Being on your own doesn't mean you're lonely. Alone is not the same as lonely.

Not to mention the erroneous, outdated and absolutely disproven claim that single men and women are sadder.

Flawed article cannot be used for any reference. This seems more like a personal opinion.

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

As /u/AntiVictimhood pointed out, if the number of single men rising then isn't the number of single women rising also? Why is the article using this patronizing tone towards men only?

If men are more desperate, as the rise of manosphere implies, doesn't that also mean that women don't desire men as much. Why not just admit that and call it a day.

[–]whenth3bowbreaks 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Actual data on this is that 60% off single women over 40 have no desire to date or get married again. This is from a census. They don't want to sign up. They are happier in their own vs in relationships. Can you imagine what's happened to them so that the cultural conditioning that women get married and need a man gets overturned?

[–]xvszero 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Another thing is women just live longer in general, so stats will get skewed by that, despite the fact that only a fraction of elderly women want to date.

A counter argument could be that many women are sharing fewer men.

But I have no proof, nor skin in that game to die on that point. But it’s possible.

I would also think that some single moms drop out of dating altogether to focus on their family. And they wouldn’t be desperate or trying to date. But just doing their own thing and raising kids.

I feel like that’s portrayed a lot in movies. Treasure planet was like that. The mom wasn’t actively dating. And she just focused on her kid and career.

[–]JonF1 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not to make it a gender war but being a single mom is tougher on average.

A lot of guys don't want to date single mothers period.

A lot of men, included just don't want to deal with the baby daddy or being a stepdad even if the biological father is a deadbeat and/or unreliable. Plenty of these guys will do nothing but start shit about where their kid they don't care about goes to school, or how they don't want another man chancing their kids deeper even though they never did, bla bla bla. If the bioparents are coparents there's nothing wrong with hit at all, its just incredibly awkward for you.

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I understand

[–]JonF1 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dating apps: Not to go full tin follow hat but they make money keeping chasing after whatever you're seeking. Honestly for me a lot of the time when I was using them it wasn't even necessarily tog et a date, it to feel that I am attractive and just be able to talk about random bullshit with girls.

Tinder and its affiliated apps (everything except Bumble, which still works basically in the same way) literally give you an ELO rank and along with other info it gathered about you, uses it against you to make you match less, or when you even do match the chances of anything happening lower. Dating apps are quite literally designed to keep you dating but always single because that's what the best for add CTR and selling tinder gold/premium/boosts or whatever.

Relationship standards: Yeah, social media is a hot mess for this.

It is often said that women want men, per the article are, emotionally available, good communicators, and share similar values. Do i believe them? Yep, but I just don't think a lot of people, importunately young women in particular know what this means.

For example, emotional vulnerability. Often this plays out to mean that women want the vulnerability that makes her feel specials but not the ones that make her feel burdened or unforgettable such as ugly crying, anxiety about money/work, or "lebensmüde".

Good communication... I feel this is misnomer for mutual understanding of communication preferences and style. Stereotypical men are seen are more blunt and crass and women as more indirect and gentle. Which one is better? Neither, people just need to be more patience with tachometer.

[–]RatDontPanic 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's driven by the huge disparity between the number of men and women on dating apps.

The article's idea that men aren't meeting women's expectations is a grossly insufficient explanation. The reality is women are encountering environments (dating apps) where they are greatly outnumbered, and the men that are on there are hyper aggressive with their right swipes. This is a double-whammy. The supply of male attention is trebly higher than what the women want. Male importance in dating is suffering from hyperinflation - far too much male attention seeking too few women.

Hyperinflation is the problem here, not the quality of men. In this environment, the better the average man is, the higher women will set their standards. It's a death spiral.

The same would be true of men if we were drowning in female attention. You should all go back and read about the plight of women in England after the 1st and 2nd World War when men were in short supply, it was brutal for those women. After World War II the average height of a married man in the UK shrank by several centimeters!

[–]Double_A_92 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Why do you think women are outnumbered there? All those men pretending to be single to cheat on their partners?

[–]RatDontPanic 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That could be the case?

[–]zapadz 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

A larger portion of men are not pursuing relationships or not pursuing long term relationships. That combined with online dating algorithms results in many men dating more than one woman, and a lot of men not engaging in relationships. One reason is because single women now outearn single men, but on average want a partner who is in a similar or higher economic bracket as them.

Women still report more feelings of loneliness then men, and there are also more single women than in the past. The main issue is probably just a atomizing society. This has been happening for a while, see “bowling alone”. It’s actually a major issue, as lonely societies are more prone to totalitarianism.

[–]AntiVictimhood 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But the study is about being partnered, not just going on dates. I do think it's true that a relatively smaller portion of men date more women if they're better looking, more confident, and are comfortable approaching women.

But that disparity in dating success is different than being in a relationship.

One dude might date 5 women, but he's not in a pair-bonded monogamous relationship with 5 women. And since this study is talking about being single (you can still be single and go on dates), I'm confused where the data is coming from and how the respondents were told to define partnership... Because I sure as shit wouldn't consider myself "partnered" to someone who was casually dating other women as well.

The data is super unclear in this article.

[–]zapadz 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It says more women are in partnerships then men. What else could it be? Aside from women in partnerships with other women, but they are a very small minority and there is also men in partnerships with other men.

[–]RatDontPanic 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

but on average want a partner who is in a similar or higher economic bracket as them.

38% of women earn more than their husbands.

That doesn’t conflict with my point, it’s only natural that happens when on average single women out earn single men. But still on average women prefer a partner who earns as much or more than them. Those are just the minority of women who don’t, or they got married inspite of it. Many women are less likely to get married for this reason.

or they got married inspite of it.

There's the answer right there. This is one of those rare areas where women go with a man who doesn't match her preferences.

Women are now less likely to divorce men who earn less, too.
