I refuse to go into any unisex changing rooms at big stores because of predators and males putting hidden cameras in. You can’t trust ANY of them

[–]ZirniaisuspirgaisFDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wow never even thought about it. Almost all stores I visit have unisex changing rooms :(

[–]MulticoloredCatMugPickmeisha™️ 264 points265 points266 points 5 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

I used to be a nanny for a 10 year old girl. Her school made all of their bathrooms unisex and she was telling me about it.

At the time I thought it was a good thing to just let people pee where they are most comfortable. But she was obviously distressed and told me that she doesn't want to be alone in the bathroom with her male teachers.

I felt really stupid for not recognizing just how vulnerable she and others are without single sex areas.

[–]FitncurlyFDS Disciple 151 points152 points153 points 5 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Why are her teachers using the student bathroom and not the teacher’s one? That’s weird. Teachers usually have separate offices or a “lounge” where they have a restroom, table, chairs and microwave or whatever. I’d keep an eye on that situation if I were a parent...

[–]MulticoloredCatMugPickmeisha™️ 58 points59 points60 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

It's a very small school, in a liberal area.

I'm not her parent, and I talked to her mom about some other very creepy and inappropriate things the teacher had done.

[–]FitncurlyFDS Disciple 23 points24 points25 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Oh no, I hope they get that sorted out and nothing comes of that creeper 😬

[–]MulticoloredCatMugPickmeisha™️ 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Her mother ignored me and I don’t work for them anymore

[–]FitncurlyFDS Disciple 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Damn, well, at least you tried 🤷🏻‍♀️. Some people just don’t listen. It’s sad though, I hope that girl will be alright.

[–]glittersparklesglitzFDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You should report the teacher to cps.

[–]MulticoloredCatMugPickmeisha™️ 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I’ve dealt with CPS before. It’s very difficult to get them to respond to things.

[–]glittersparklesglitzFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So have I. But it’s good for them to at least have the information on file.

[–]MulticoloredCatMugPickmeisha™️ 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree. The only thing I could prove the teacher did was photoshop a girls face onto a twerking elf then send it out to the rest of the class.

The mother thought it was funny and didn’t see an issue with it because she’s a pickme extraordinaire.

I talked to the daughter about how it’s inappropriate for the teacher to sexualize her friend like that.

[–][deleted] 112 points113 points114 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is around the time when some girls' bodies start changing and the are starting their periods. Girls still get shamed for periods, so I can understand that at that age they don't not want to share a washroom with boys or male teachers. Not to mention that some male teachers are effing pervs.

[–][deleted] 58 points59 points60 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If that were my daughter I would sue for discrimination against female children/title IX

Nowadays women seem to be leading the charge in fighting to take away what the women before them had to fight and claw for to progress to where we are today, and that includes sex specific bathrooms. Let's stop and think for a moment at the privilege of being able to leave our houses and use a washroom designated for us. It seems ridiculous now but it wasn't not too long ago.

The fight for same sex designed washrooms is important especially because it seems like it shouldn't matter, but data and history shows that it does.

Again, like so many issues regarding women that advocates are fighting against, it's about safety and respect.

Women's safety is more important than men's feelings.

Women's safety is more important than the corporate and government bottom line.

Women's safety is more important than inclusion at all costs.

[–]EveSerpentFDS Newbie 46 points47 points48 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. Basic reality & our experience shows that it’s important too. Bathrooms WERE the one place women and girls could also go to escape being harassed by men and boys in the moment, and find another woman to help if possible. Now the entitled pervs can follow right on in and gang up if they want to.

[–]LilithWonFDS STRATEGY COACH 33 points34 points35 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The legislative building in my province didn't have a women's washroom AT ALL until the freakin' 1990s! Female politicians had to go to a completely different building to use the washroom.

I wish more women could accept that women aren't to blame for the existence of male perverts. If people want to be mad because the world can't be turned into a gender neutral paradise, be mad at the disproportionate amount of perverted criminal men, not the women who want to avoid them.

[–]t3ddiFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think alot of women are unaware of the history. Disconnected history is the root of all evil.

[–]ferociouslycuriousFDS Newbie 90 points91 points92 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Is this problem occurring in single room locations or larger rooms with multiple stalls? I have only seen single room unisex ones (such as a gas station bathroom, single room with locking door) but I hear about being alone with males and it makes me think there are spaces I’m unfamiliar with. I feel very privileged WRT assault so I’m naive and I want to be more aware of how best to advocate. Are the single room ones safer?

[–]LadyKaitlyn91 points 5 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Same, when I think of unisex bathrooms I think of the single room ones as well, but multiple stalls would definitely make me uncomfortable in a unisex bathroom. I’m a petite woman and bathrooms tend to be out of the way, I don’t want to go in there knowing any man can just follow behind. Also makes me nervous about those tiny hidden cameras people sometimes find in stalls even in separated bathrooms. I’m a little germaphobic anyway but if this catches on more I think I’d rather just go home than keep shopping there if I had to go.

[–]vaguelinenFDS Newbie 92 points93 points94 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Whenever I read about people like you saying they’d go home rather than continuing the activity you want to do, I wonder if there isn’t something underhand at play.

Women’s bathrooms are still a fairly recent thing. Victorian Women used to stay closer to home due to a lack of toilets for them to use. I fear we’ll see that return if we don’t have safe spaces.

How do you feel about Butch women being assaulted when trying to use the restroom because they don't look feminine enough??

[–]jargon_explosionFDS Newbie 64 points65 points66 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It's happening in both. Or the women's washroom gets designated as unisex while the men's remains men only.

[–]yourscreennamesucksFDS Newbie 50 points51 points52 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Women don't want to use the men's restroom. MEN act like they are entitled to use the women's. They go in and act like psychopaths, leaving their shit stains for us to scrub. Scrotes got mad when they were banned at work. Acted like it was the women who were the problem. God forbid they hold each other accountable.

[–]Aphor1stFDS Newbie 44 points45 points46 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

In my area it’s the opposite most of the female restrooms have stayed the same and all the male restrooms have been switched to unisex. I don’t hate it.

[–]jargon_explosionFDS Newbie 46 points47 points48 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's a better compromise in my opinion. It hasn't been my experience unfortunately.

[–]intergalacticanon44FDS Newbie 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My uni in central london has both a unisex restroom and a female and male restroom. Everyone feels comfortable.

[–]EveSerpentFDS Newbie 121 points122 points123 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Any woman who supports these has never had to use one. The first time I did, there was a line to use the stalls. A gross guy in line behind me was trying to hit on me. I was trapped: if I left , I’d lose my place. There was no other bathroom around. Unisex bathrooms and change rooms are anti -women and unsafe in multiple ways. Their existence is misogyny in the extreme.

[–]LilithWonFDS STRATEGY COACH 77 points78 points79 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Story time [trigger warning]

I once needed to use the washroom at the grocery store. They only had single-room unisex bathrooms, one was unlocked, so I went in. To my surprise, there was a middle aged, hairy, obese man standing in there shirtless with his pants all the way on the ground and his hands on his dick. I immediately was like "holy shit!" and turned on my heel and got out of there. I went to complain to the manager and he was just like "oh, okay?" and didn't seem to have a problem with that. Didn't want to call the police, didn't want to write a report or anything. Just seemed kinda annoyed with me for wasting his time.

[–]FitncurlyFDS Disciple 81 points82 points83 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Speak with your dollars—never patronize or spend money at a place that does this. They’ll notice the loss of revenue and either fix it or tank. I’d walk right out and go to the competition that actually has some damn common sense. If it’s a school? Raise hell, get together with other parents (who would likely be on board, especially if they have daughters), go to the school board and PTA. This is another instance where money talks. If you can, relocate to a school that also has common sense. If all the people with money and influence did this it’d put pressure on the schools for their own bottom line.

[–]EveSerpentFDS Newbie 52 points53 points54 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes when possible, but it’s not always. Community centres and libraries have done this in my city, it’s awful because the only choice is to not go, and so limit our community life as women. Which is the real goal of all of this.

[–]FitncurlyFDS Disciple 26 points27 points28 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That’s awful, and so true. At our libraries they have unisex for the small children’s restroom in the children’s library, but the adults still have separate sexed ones. Doesn’t matter about the kids’ bathroom because the toilets are so tiny and the door locks so it’s meant for parents to take their kids in and not have anyone else there. I may live in a liberal place but at least they’ve never lost common sense....yet 🤞🏼 (for the love of Goddess hopefully never)

[–]EveSerpentFDS Newbie 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m crossing my fingers for you. I first encountered this back in 2013 in Manhattan. I don’t live there and I thought my city would surely be safe from it. Now here we are. My community centre that I used to love going to for various activities is now a place I cringe about and avoid. It’s awful and super-frustrating.

[–]uptownxthotFDS Newbie 99 points100 points101 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

unisex bathrooms would honestly be such a great idea if men weren’t socialized to be fucking predators. they literally ruin everything.

[–]AnanorielFDS Newbie 19 points20 points21 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Exactly my thoughts. I think it is a wonderful idea especially to make non binary and/or people feel included instead of excluded by only 2 types of gendered bathrooms. But it made me feel sad that men apparantly still know how to fuck it up and make everyone feel unsafe by assaulting us. Why can't we have nice things?

[–]Aphor1stFDS Newbie 51 points52 points53 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I live in a VERY progressive gay orientated area. I think we have the second highest population of LGBTQIA+ in California after San Francisco. Most restaurants and stores have switched to unisex bathrooms but the difference here is also since it’s a high tourist area as well is that there is usually a unisex bathroom and a female only bathroom. I think this is the best way to keep it inclusive and safe for everyone.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Completely agree here. I think having a unisex OPTION is queer inclusive/essential, but it would be good to have male/female/unisex as a single stall (which i feel it usually is?)

[–]honeybeerollFDS Disciple 42 points43 points44 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I have seen women on here talk about the voyeurism that happens in unisex bathrooms OR one story where this woman worked a graveyard shift w/ one other guy who used the women's restroom and purposefully trashed it. Other employees were getting angry at her when it was him.

So I used to have no problem with single stall unisex bathrooms, and always thought it was kinda funny that my mom is like "no, I don't want to use a bathroom a man has used." But after hearing these stories, I get my mom's perspective. There's psychotic men out there like the one in the story I just mentioned, and men who set cameras in all female changing rooms, bathrooms, and elsewhere for years now. Men actively invade our private spaces, so I don't really fw inviting them into those private spaces. If it's a small restaurant then I'm like alright it is what it is, it's a cost/space thing, but putting in unisex bathrooms as policy, I don't fw.

I'm fine w/ unisex bathrooms as policy if you have room for all 3 - male, female, and all gender. Think I saw that at the San Francisco Airport and appreciated that. My office is part of a 2 floor coworking space, and there's 4 bathrooms - a women's on each floor, a men's on the 2nd floor, and a single stall unisex on the 1st floor. I appreciated that they put a women's bathroom on each floor and recognized that women need more space. You never see a line a mile long outside a men's restroom lol.

Appreciate you making this post btw. I have never seen bathroom bills and such be passed w/ much consideration for women's feelings or how this law will affect the primary user, women.

Same here. There should be more options, not less. Accommodate parents with kids, non binary/ trans, sensory sensitivity, etc.

[–]ThoraFriganzaFDS Newbie 27 points28 points29 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have never been to a unisex chancing rooms and I wouldn't want to go in one if there are men. That said I think there should be an option for people who are more comfortable with that. But I'm sure there is a majority who wouldn't (though most men probably don't care) so it sounds more about it beig cheaper rather than the safety for women or that they actually care about gender neutral people.

We have a right to penis free spaces, where the hell has safeguarding gone? Not only the violation of privacy and potential for voyeurism, sexual assault and bullying - but men piss on the floor 😫
