I have a group of about 10 friends, and we've all run together since we were ~4-5. Kindergarten homies right through to our 30s.
3 of them stood for me in my wedding 2 weeks ago. The word "friend" rings hollow; those guys are my brothers

In reality, yes.
I have five friends who have been together since grade-school. There are forty of us from high school that get together every year for a manorial golf tournament.
I think a lot of the argument that men need marriage because we do not maintain male friendship is just more hyperbole, and often it is marriage that separates us from those friends.
[–]Exorsaik 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Yep. Almost every guy has lost friends when they enter a relationship. They may or may not have been the best of friends but people change priorities and perspective when dating, especially if it gets serious.
[–]DJ-Roukan 13 points14 points15 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
True that, and I've read and heard many stories where the wife was instrumental in breaking up those friendships...often times while maintaining her own.
I've seen guys that appear to be more like another child of hers than her husband...and you know they have not had sex in months, or even years (that comes out when guys feel safe enough to confess). I've had guy say, "my wife won't let me", or "I'll have to see if it's ok with my wife"...even "I'll get in trouble with the wife".
Blows my mind as I've been married for years and if my wife even hints of such she gets the stare that says, "are you really going to go there?" They are so scared of upsetting her, and I have no idea why. My wife is a great woman, my best friend, but there have been plenty of times when I've pissed my wife off when she leaned to the "mother syndrome"...and she loves me for it.
Guys need to unlearn a whole set of nonsense they've been taught.

For real. Marriage is supposed to be a partnership. Sort of treat it like a mutual business were not always are both parties going to agree but they should at least try and compromise when issues come up and things should run smoothly. Helps to have a partner who feels the same way about it as well.
Wife and I dated for 13 years before marriage, only ended up married as a easier way to protect our accumulated joint assets after i had a heart attack and some of my family members came out of the wood work while i was in the hospital and it didnt look like id make it wanting to lay claim to things that rightfully should go to my wife and/or kids. I was like fuck that jazz.
Just like with any business if it goes south both partners take a cut, seems to scare some dudes. Id say to that though maybe dont just jump into getting married and actually spend some time actually learning what your partners life goals and wants are and how they behave under stresses in your relationship before doing so.
[–]DJ-Roukan 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Agree with all of what you've stated...and I am aslo married, long term.
My only argument is that marriage is not treated as an equal partnership if it all goes south, not even in the distribution of legal power during the marriage. Men are routinely being devastated by lack of power and an extremely biased court system, exiled in 85% of all divorces, often paying both child support and alimony...and the child support system is the biggest rip-off in the history of rip-offs, profitable to everyone except the father and child.
Here is a short clip that basically exposes the fallacies as "best interest of the child".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5V1QJ7G-qJo
Beyond that, maintaining the current system and telling men to "be careful" is like telling wives (when we thought DV was only perpetrated by men), that they should "be careful" but provide a system that not only fails to protect them, but punishes them if they become victims.
Hopefully it will change, we will exact change. I'm not a fan of extremism, and some issues can become extreme, but with the marriage power disparity, parental rights, the family courts system, Duluth as the basis for determining "victim-hood", men SHOULD be afraid, very afraid.

My boyfriend had to be taught that I don’t want him to ask for my permission to go do stuff with friends or family. Sometimes he’ll still ask, “Is that okay with you?” after he tells me he’s gonna go do something, but it’s fine because he doesn’t mean it in the sense of “I’m not going if you don’t let me” sort of way. It boggled my mind the first time he said, “Can I go see “so and so” this weekend?” I would never flat out just say, “Yes.” I would always reply with “Don’t ask me that,” and it took almost a year for him to kick the habit.
yes, my SO and I say the same, but as you state, a matter of courtesy.
Beyond that, you bring up a very important point, and I want this to be clearly understood, my contention is not the usual "women are evil" or that women are even responsible for such, but that men are offering this up, putting themselves in the position.
In a society where around 35% of kids are being born into fatherless homes, where 85% of divorces result in the exile of the father, where the educational system is vastly misrepresented by gender, and an estimated 50% of boy have no real interaction with a male until past middle school, how can this not be a result?
They've spent the vast majority of the young life in the charge of females, and even beyond that, when stepping into dating situations where where a man must , pay and provide service such as pulling chairs and opening doors in an attempt to prove himself and his behavior as acceptable, and then, in beggars posture, on bent knee, essentially offering up 1/3 of his salary for the approval and permission of the female.
All of that is accompanied by a media conglomerate that routinely portrays them as inept and incapable, unable to boil and egg without burning down the house or poisoning a kid.
Honestly, I'm surprised that so many even have the testicular fortitude to ask permission. We've basically castrated AND gutted our young men today...and then wonder why they are as they are, or why the suicide rate has skyrocketed as of late, postulating it as an aspect of "Toxic Masculinity"...blaming them once again for what we've done to them.
My contention is, and will remain, that the entirety of this issue is the result of a glaring lack of masculinity, the self confidence in provides...the souls of young men a decaying, vacant lot where masculinity used to park.

Bros before ho(e?)s guys.
True for a great many men...and it should piss us off when "the experts" crane their necks to look around the issue seeking an acceptable explanation....Forrest through the trees.

Honestly, it’s nice to see a group of buddies through the long haul, but can’t the same be said for women?
I know several of my girl high school acquaintances have kept strong friendships with their girl friends, some 20 years later.
How’s this relevant to the sub?
[–]rationalthought314 70 points71 points72 points 7 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link
but can’t the same be said for women?
Sure but some would say that is largely unrealistic. One article on Cosmo says the friendship of Sex and City was unrealistic with such quotes as:
Group female relationships are complicated, even when you're not on the rigorous set of a hit TV series. The more people in a friend group, the more you have to navigate conflict more carefully, avoiding bigger blowups by taking sides or even trash-talking.
According to Dr. Irene Levine, half of female close friendships don't last over 7 years.
The much bigger picture of this which does relate to Men's Rights is the long held negative view of men overall - that we're violent, selfish, ego-driven, insecure which is why we get those gilette ads and the idea that toxic masculinity is a major male problem. This ignores men's inherent virtues such as longterm friendships based on respect and loyalty. Meanwhile, women refuse to do any self retrospection of their own problems and wonder at their their inability to keep longterm friendships or why they keep falling for the same kind of bad boy. Many of them would rather blame men and the patriarchy.

I've been a long time lurker of this sub because I do believe there is a discussion to be had with men's rights. However, it irks me when we moan about feminists making huge sweeping generalisations of men and yet I see it in this sub. It really does not help the cause if we're conducting in the very same trite, hackneyed discourse that we detest.
[–]rationalthought314 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Thanks for the tone policing! But it is a problem. Generally speaking society continually says "What is wrong with men?" but never addresses "What's wrong with women?" This is why we find ourselves collectively scratching our heads as for example more of these pedophile female teachers come out yet we don't say anything nor have that talk about why women do these things. I think it would benefit women if there were more discussions amongst themselves about the darker side of their nature something feminism in general will not do as they are too focused on fighting the vague patriarchy.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Generally speaking society continually says "What is wrong with men?" but never addresses "What's wrong with women?"
This is exactly my point. We get frustrated with the continuous diatribe against men as a whole and yet our response is to do exactly the same thus creating this dichotomous shit-slinging that doesn't really help either "side". Treat each issue with its own nuance and argue the case dependant on the issue at hand rather than lumping it all under the men vs women category.
[–]VANcf13 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I agree with this so much but also question, whether society as a whole does this
I personally neither see "what is wrong with men" nor "what is wrong with women" being a question being continuously asked throughout our society.
and from my personal perspective, I ask myself "what is wrong with people" sometimes but I do not perceive the "gender debate" the way it is frequently portrayed here, as a "men vs women" thing.

There are countless variations on the same theme in mainstream news and general media. Politicians kowtow to these groups, Hollywood believes "Girls rule and boys drool" is a viable marketing strategy for films with strong female protagonists, The Arts in general are engaged in full-scale virtue signalling towards women and minorities, and through all this society is eating it up. Granted, it's changing gradually but the change can't come fast enough in my opinion.

your point is to do nothing? Look, pushing back is not the same as being the same as feminists, for one thing it's back up with facts that we have all observed. Feminism fails women in only focusing on men as the source of their problems perpetuating a state of hopeless victimhood.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
your point is to do nothing?
Where are you getting that from? I think you're completely missing my point. I'm not offering an immediate solution to anything as I haven't got all the answers. I'm just pointing out my opinion on something I've observed. Essentially, broad sweeping platitudes that offer nothing in terms of discussion and progress are detrimental to Men's Rights being respected and valued on the world stage. Individuals are to blame, not whole genders.

Counter points and thoughts:
Cosmo is one of the worst offenders for opinions, so I frankly never listen to anything they publish.
The doctor’s friendship research then also shows 1/2 of women’s friendships do last longer than 7 years. I’d also guess that a healthy % of men’s friendships also don’t last longer than 7 years, but have no data on that.
I don’t think showing men can be long term friends negates the (completely fictional and harmful, yet still pervasive) mentality of toxic masculinity. Just because guys can be friends doesn’t mean they can’t also be plotting the rape of every female passer-by (/s for the second half of this point)

[–]rationalthought314 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Cosmo is terrible as is social media but like the latter Cosmo also reveals truths directly and indirectly that society wants to ignore. As for anecdotes, quite a few female friends have complained more about other women friends than they have about male friends whom they generally say are easier to get along with.
[–]Legiitsushii 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Toxic masculinity is an important issue. It is the reason people believe men cant be raped or that young boys would enjoy being molested by an older woman. Toxic masculinity is why so many men with depression let it go untreated. Toxic masculinity is something that affects men just as much as everyone else. Of course a shitty corporation is gonna use it as some "moral" marketing campaign. That can't stop us from seeing the actual issue with toxic masculinity. You also shouldn't make this an "us vs them" issue. We can tackle these issues with out being hateful towards the opposite gender.
[–]rationalthought314 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Toxic Masculinity is a bullshit buzzword made up recently to create awareness of a problem that doesn't really exist as a male problem. It does create an "us vs them" because it creates a situation where men are treated like sufferers of a disease we never heard of before.
[–]xKalista2 points 7 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
Toxic masculinity is an inherently toxic term because it implies masculinity is toxic. If you wanna have the talk about toxic masculinity you have to talk about toxic femininity. I'd argue women are more toxic than men. The toxic behaviors of women are passive-aggressive while men are aggressive, pick your poison.
[–]Legiitsushii 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Toxic Femininity is definitely a thing. Women are made to feel like they are "competing" with one another. Often leading to half hearted friendships. End result can go so far as women feeling as if they have to be some sort of sex icon. Getting plastic surgery and what not. Men have to be tough and women have to be pretty. The societal pressure forces people to be something they might not really want to be. Warps the mind of young children into believing that they have to follow the "guidelines" to be a "real" man or woman.
[–]marauderp 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Women are made to feel like they are "competing" with one another.
They are competing with one another. So are men. You have to be delusional to not understand this.
[–]AmuseDeath 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Nope.
[–]Legiitsushii 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
So you don't actually care about Men's rights. You just are looking for a reason to be angry. Toxic masculinity is the reason people dont take male victim's of domestic violence seriously. It effects men everywhere. It is just a phrase that people get angry about because they think it means all masculinity is toxic. That's not true at all.
[–]spectan3 points 7 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
you really just kinda said nothing but "hey this is the cause" with no actual evidence to back it up.
toxic masculinity isn't real, toxic people are.
depression goes untreated because men fear being made an outcast socially or may not have the means that many women do to get help.
people also think men cant be raped because they are small minded, nobody thinks of drugs or anything of the sort, and its a common thought between men and women.
if toxic masculinity is what you define it here, either you have the wrong definition or the vast majority of people have the wrong definition, im leaning towards it being you.
my favorite part of this post was the fact it was posted with a controversial opinion, offered no statistics or data to back up your claims, someone said nope and you immediately said he didn't care about men's rights LOL
[–]Legiitsushii 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You guys just really hate the idea of Masculinity being able to be toxic. You guys talk about how tough Men have it in this day in age yet won't accept a possible explanation. It's a bias held by society as a whole. That men should be providers and protectors. That they should not ever let their emotions show. That grown men can't experience anxiety or depression. That's toxic masculinity. You can say it doesn't exist but that just means that none of the issues men face today exist. Group think makes a lot of people wrong all the time. So I'm probably not wrong about the actual definition of Toxic masculinity. Also your example about men not seeking treatment is exactly what I mean by toxic masculinity. We as men are just expected to deal with it. Not being equipped with as many resources as others.
[–]tjanith 28 points29 points30 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
exactly. Things like this kills the value of "mens right" the same way how blind (figuratively) woman who ruins the value of "feminism"
[–]Kyriios188 -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I don't think so.
This is just a post about pride. Proud of having male friends, positivity regarding male friendship. That's the kind of thing you would expect from a sub about men's rights : positivity and pride of being what you are.
It's not just comparing to women
[–]NohoTwoPointOh 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
But don't forget. Most men are so damned brainwashed that they see pride as "anti-woman".
[–]tjanith 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
exactly what I'm saying, we both (men and women) have some brain washed people who think that,
females (some not all) in feminist movement thinks that "ANTI-MEN" and hates on males and be unrational.
males (some not all) in Men's right movement thinks that "ANTI-WOMEN" and hates on every female.
I mean come on. I have an auntie who's in her 70s and she still have her circle of best friends since grade 8?
and come on, my elder brother who's 34 have no friend who's with him when he was young. This fact and "progress" is not real, and "social issue" it's not a social issue, it's a issue of personality. Not the gender.
[–]NohoTwoPointOh 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
There is a STARK difference. FWIW, this is the same argument I hear when someone says "my grandfather and grandmother stayed married for 99 years".
The social environment is MUCH different now because of things like social media. My grandmother was the quintessential NAWALT to my grandfather. But when I look at pictures of her in her 20's, I realize that she was hotter than a two-dollar pistol. Had Facebook or IG existed in her day (or even no-stigma, no-fault divorce), she probably would have reacted differenly to the 475 kilometers of electronic cock hurled at her every hour. Your auntie and my grandmother had entirely different social landscapes and mores than your elder brother. I'm a bit of a "tweener" between those two generations, so I saw both.
I mention the male-female relationship angle only to say that we must figure things out based on today's landscape and not upon a past that is alien to our current mechanics. I *do* agree that personality is a factor, but environment makes a huge difference. It's similar to giving someone 10 million dollars and a "get out of jail free" card. Even the most demure librarian can become a hyper-competitive monster. And when it comes to gender, women are the ones who are substantially more affected by our current, social media climate. I agree that men are not immune, but proven biological dynamics mean that women will hyper-compete more--thus putting severe pressure on same-sex friendships. This pressure was not as pronounced back in auntie or grandma's day.
ETA Sources
[–]tjanith 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't really understand what you said but all I'm saying is that all men isn't having friendships that lasts, all women aren't having temporary friendships as well. It's different yeah? I mean, it can be dependable. I have female friends for years now. They have friends that has been for years. Yes environment does pave a big effect but I still believe that the mindset and personality is what cave them in for their relationships.
[–]NohoTwoPointOh 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Then you should try harder to understand, for the links I posted underscore why the gender differences exist and have been made wider by today's climate. Again, no one said all men or all women. But when you look at every bit of research, men are FAR more likely to have longer, lasting, GENUINE relationships. This was far more pronounced in auntie's time (and before), where men were far more affectionate with each other and had male-only spaces to build intimacy that makes long-term, deep friendships.
If I can clarify my point, please tell me how I can best do this. But don't take my word for it. People smarter than myself have figured this out.

I agree this sub isn’t about comparing to women, but it is about identifying where men have a deficit in rights, and working to bring attention to and/or solve those problems.
Male friendship isn’t at stake, and never has been.
Adults often lose track of friends, but that’s fairly common across the board.
This being a pat on the back post, it really doesn’t address any problems we men face, nor console us for the problems we have.
I don’t see it being anything more than /r/pics worthy, and it already was at the top of that sub, earlier in the week.
[–]Kyriios188 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't think it's just about men's legal rights, but about men's situation. Men very rarely are proud to be men, and i think that's an issue. This type of post glorifies male friendship and spreads positivy around what it means to be male, and I think that's great.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Like one person has said that women don't have long term friendships with other women. The OP never said anything about women.
We can have a discussion about positive male experiences, and how men interact with their fellow men without worrying if women are included or not.
[–]jostler57 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
When reading this post’s title, “Men’s friendships can last a lifetime,” subtext and logical next steps in thought process lead one to consider several things:
Why say “Men’s” if all genders share the same experience? Any logical thinker will consider the unsaid subtext: Is it meant to say that women’s friendships do not? If that’s not the case, what’s the point? Were men’s friendships ever under attack or reduced over time?
Those are the next steps in thinking. So, which one is it? Men’s friendships are viewed as bad or in dire straights? Or is it to view the opposite end of the spectrum, at women’s friendships?
It’s not a face value post.

I've had the same group of friends since grade 8 when we all met. There's 11 of us. We're in our late 30s now.
We've shared so much together. We've started families, our partners genuinely like each other and hang out without the guys. Some of us are complete idiots. We come from all over the world and all walks of life. We've got construction workers and actuaries in the group and everything in between.
It's an effort to maintain that many relationships but we are all together at least once a month and we get together for football games or hockey games in smaller groups frequently. It's important to keep good people in your life.
Frankly I don't know what I'd do without these guys. I love them and I tell them that pretty often.
You're the average of the people who you are surrounded by. Make those people good ones.

They all look like a different type of Dad in the last picture. Makes me love this even more.
Such a great great photo grouping. Great to see through time!

Wow your lucky, I had two friends from age 2/3 in my neighborhood that I grew up with since we played together in a playpen as toddlers.
We were pretty much best friends until around age 14. One stayed friendly and the other became one of those “who are you again?” Friends when I was around him at school.
By the time I was 18 both ended up being total dicks and we have never spoken since, and the two dicks don’t speak to each other either.
Shame how it goes sometimes.
Enjoy your friendship it’s certainly lucky to have it.

The older you get, the more you appreciate friends like this... trust me.
I wonder what Sprite did to lose their business.

Haha, was sort of thinking the same thing. Also realized though that over the years ive changed my favorite pop a few times so if you look at old pictures of me from around early teenager age ill have diet cokes in them. Somewhere around late highschool i switched to diet pepsi because during gym at school my cokes would get to warm and basically burn my throat and i felt that it probably wasnt a good idea to drink something that when warm like that felt painful to drink. Just a few years later i went on a exploration for a few months so theres just a random assortment of drinks i tried out and some pictures may show that for around a period of 6 months to 9 months. Eventually settled on diet dr. pepper which to this day is still what i drink on the regular.

gosh I wish I was still friends with my HS buddies, most of them became meth heads or otherwise became unsavory people.

Can't wait for the depressing one when they're like 65 but a few of them are missing...

My best friends have all lived several hours from me for years and years at this point. I get to see them maybe once a year and it’s great.
But moving away and then switching major cities three times in 5 years feels bad man for making friends. Especially in your 30s!

I'm sure a Feminist somewhere on reddit looked at this and thought to themselves ''How can I make this about the Patriarchy'' ?
Women hate the concept of happy men.
Wish I could’ve had long lasting friendships since childhood. Knew this kid since we were infants and my mom would babysit while our older sisters were in school and his mom worked full time, and in the summers we’d go to each other’s houses and they had a built in pool and we had a sprinkler in the backyard. But such is life, we have totally different lives now and I haven’t talked to him in a few years.
My dad on the other hand has been close with his college buddies for over 40 years now and every August they do a 3 day “reunion” party at a beautiful cottage right on the lake. Wine tasting, great food, bonfire, etc. A couple of his college friends moved out of state, one of which is my dad’s best friend since high school but they come up during Christmas and we do a get together. It’s pretty fun! I was one of the first few “kids” out of several, and now all the kids are grown up or married. My first year, the moms arranged a picture of the 5 of us (at the time) at the base of a large oak tree. We were all little babies/toddlers. That was 30 years ago. My dad’s best friend’s son brings a lot of his friends up and they all set up their tents for the weekend and we play volleyball or croquet or bocce. So much fun!

I do wish I had friends like this though, I just have 1 best friend that I see maybe twice a year and speak to over discord just as often.
Friggin getting together with a woman with kids from 3 other dads... jesus christ. Not worth it.

Copy. I knew my best friend since we were pre-toddlers (5months/3months) ... I rarely see him these days since I now live half a planet away, but we do stay in touch.

This is nice to see. Though feels sort of r/wholesome to me.
Still friends with alot of my friends school. We always talk mature at first but it devolves into childish banter after a few hours or pints. Haha.

Men together in one place?? So much toxic masculinity they must be planning to rape women.
[–]crnext -3 points-2 points-1 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
We don't get jealous of each other. Someone else gets a promotion at work, we are excited for them. Best friend gets a nice big boat, no reason to try and keep up with the Joneses. He will still be your best friend. If two guys wore the same expensive suit to an event, we laugh it off.
Women? Yeah, umm.
[–]May-Yo-Naize 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Lol I don't think you've met many women. But that's to be expected, given the subreddit

Thanks for sharing.. Don’t you think that this exchange of views would be more fruitful if we would remember that our words make a difference. „If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”, said Dalai Lama
