I just don't understand why people write these with gender specific pronouns in the first place. If they're true than they're true for both sexes and I feel like they'd sound more profound that way anyway. "The real power of a person is the size of the smile of the person sitting next to them" doesn't that sound way more wholesome? Isn't the message "Just be awesome to each other" much more clear when written like this? It's like the people who wrote these don't see the opposite sex as people and that feelings are things only they have.

I think the original and this one played too heavily into gender roles. Men don't need to be masculine in a relationship and women don't need to be feminine.

It's okay if you want one that is, but not everyone needs to be like that.

I actually think the third and ninth ones impart a good-ish message. No one will love you unconditionally, and being in a relationship where one person doesn't respect the value of the relationship is unhealthy. A healthy man or woman doesn't need their partner, but does respect the value he/she adds to their life.

If you can't live without your spouse, you're heading into codependency territory. Even if your spouse is otherwise a good partner, that will end badly if you ever break up or if they die.

You should always be capable of standing on your own if you can help it. Then your relationship is balanced between two forces of equal strength, and more likely to remain stable.

When I was younger and unaware of how sexist feminism was, i saw these kinds of 'empowering' quotes and while I didnt necessarily think of them as empowering it was more of a yeah go girl power thing. It's surprising to me how many girls fall for that sort of thing, thinking it's cool to think that way
