Right, so it's important for the safety of everyone that uses these roads/bridges/buildings, that the engineers are actually able to pass the exam.

Keen suggested that the timing of the exam may pose a problem for women, as they may have less time to study due to family obligations.

So in other words, the exam ISN'T biased against women, they just lack the knowledge because they "don't have time to study"?

Of course, because not being able to pass the exam must mean some sort of bias against women. Interestingly, I raised a similar concern with feminists before, about the fact that boys do worse in school and so the education system is biased against boys. The response was that maybe girls are smarter than boys… Yet here, they immediately jump to ‘bias against women’.

Looking at the details of the exam itself, it does seem rather excessive, it is 8 hours apparently!

Pointless article. They hypothesize the whole biased against women argument but don’t have any evidence from the exam itself. They just have data that women tend to do poorly on the exam. Except in Montana where they tend to do better. Maybe they should research what Montana engineers are doing differently instead of assuming a question can be so heavily biased a college educated person can’t answer it properly.

This is incredibly ironic. I am unsure if you guys know but there have been multiple studies over the years that show professors at unis and colleges and teachers in grade school on average will give women a higher grade for less work done. This is because they believe that women are oppressed. This could be a reason why men arent going to college as much anymore

Mid 30s civil engineer with my PE license here

I took the exam relatively late in my career in 2019.

There were plenty of women taking the exam.

Also, I remember a female classmate of mine back in 2009 who went into engineering because it paid better than being a math teacher. Our senior year, she chose not to take the prerequisite exam (FE) to the PE because she was focused on filling out her application for Teach for America.

I think she's now a homeschooling mom, which is what she should have been aiming to do in the first place.

And, yes, by all accounts she's a very traditional wife and mother who frankly was lied to about how fun it is to get splinters on the corporate ladder.

TLDR: Motivation is a key component to passing the FE and PE exams. And, since being an engineer doesn't help women find the relationship with men they claim to want, studying for the PE and passing the PE isn't as high of a priority for women as it is for men.

Kind of what happens if you take in engineering students for diversity rather than because the college believes they can absorb the curriculum and get a license. They let in unqualified students to meet a quota, inflate their grades, but they suddenly slam into reality when it comes time for the exam when they can't skirt by on diversity and find out that their four years of education has been a complete lie for the university's benefit.

I'm a hard science graduate and the system in my country is similar to the British system. Before we can apply to join a degree course we have to obtain certificates in the 3 main advanced level sciences: chemistry, biology and physics.

Biology is by far a science dominated by women. But physics, which is absolutely necessary for engineering, does not seem to be a favourite with women. Several years ago it was being argued that women were shying away from physics because when teaching the basic concepts, male examples were being used. For example some feminists were arguing that when a subject like acceleration was being taught, the examples used by teachers were racing cars. When teaching momentum, bullets were used as examples.
