I’d say there are multi red flags here. 1. She may not care. 2. She sees this as not her money. Ok to freely spend. 3. Has no awareness of legal fees. You spent 10k she spent 150k. Ignorance is bliss. 4. She knows your tracking and your pissed.

Time to change tactics. Show the judge she is spending frivolously wasting funds on needless legal work. Not a responsible party to manage funds.

I hear you. My STBXW has racked up 60k in 4 months. We have accomplished nothing but a temporary order. Discovery just wrapped up. We have a mediation session in a few weeks.

I frequently observe women being taken advantage of in such situations. However, I wonder what new insights or discoveries could possibly be gained after a year and a half? It seems somewhat perplexing. Were you requested to split the cost with her? And was there any notable gain from spending such a large sum of money?

Your STBX is encouraged to spend more because she's seeking emotional justice through the court. Her attorneys know and welcome this because their primary motivator is billable hours. Any logic about what she's spent vs what the marital estate is worth will only fall on deaf ears to her. Women's natural proclivity is emotionalism, not rationalism.

The quickest and cheapest way to get your divorce finalized is to set sail for trial. Schedule mediation 6-8 weeks before trial. With trial as a backstop, sometimes that's enough fear uncertainty and doubt for her to become reasonable long enough to get a deal done. Sometimes that won't happen until the 11th hour on the courthouse steps. 95-98% of all divorces are finalized before trial.

I know we all agree here on how parasitic the family law industry is, but it’s still kind of shocking to me how shameless they are. My ex wasn’t insane before she filed for divorce, but during the process her lawyers put the fear of god into her about “things I might do”, and she went legitimately batshit crazy. It’s a real shame.

When I realized how much my ex was spending on her lawyer, and confronted her, she casually said, "We're going to sue you for my legal fees. So it's all free for me."

Said with a smile and total indifference.

Now, maybe if you're sitting on a $1MM nest egg, there could be some truth to the threat. But in my case, I was putting my lawyer on a credit card. We didn't have a huge nest egg. They just look at you like you're a bottomless pit of money. Totally delusional.

Anyway, OP, it made me wonder if her lawyer promised her that YOU will be paying for it all.

This seems like one of those scams where the body shop over charges your insurance company and gives you a grand after repairs.
