Hypocritical that the Boy Scouts need to accept girls but not the reverse.

If the Girl Scouts is failing at delivering experiences the girls want, they should fix the Girl Scouts, not put the burden on the Boy Scouts.

I have a friend who’s on the board of a scout troop. This is really messing things up for them. Parent leaders now need special training. If there’s girls, they need a female leader which they often can’t get. They’ve had to cancel many opportunities because they can’t get the leaders they need due to this.

I was a Cub Scout in the early 1970’s and there was a push then to allow girls into the organization. Around the same time a boy tried to join the Girl Scouts and there was pushback by the same women trying to get girls into the Cub Scouts. That’s when I realized the hypocritical nature of women.

My understanding is they made the change not due to outside pressure but to try to boost falling enrollment numbers. They lost a lot of the very conservative troops.

The big complaint I've always heard is that Girl Scouts couldn't earn the Eagle Scout rank. But the Girl Scouts do have a similar level of attainment called the Gold Award. When I would bring that up the complaint was then "But it isn't as well known and prestigious as Eagle Scout." That sounds to me like a branding and publicity problem for the Girl Scouts to solve.

I am not from the USA. Sometimes I see mixed groups that are similar to boy scouts. I see no issue with this part. When I was part of such a group, girls were already present.

Of course forcing boy scouts to accept girls, when girls scouts can keep discriminating, that is just more of the double standards.

Yeah they recently became inclusive. You should watch the documentary scouts honor. Watch out for the rape, still not enough practices in place to prevent that.

I agree they could’ve started their own org. I saw a lot of private schools convert from all boys to include girls as well.

Any fraternal organization that allows women to join is not a men's/boys' organization at all, and frankly, not worthy of existing.

It's not always women's fault, but having women in the group completely fucks up the fraternal bonding process and makes shit awkward. Even if all the men play it cool, you can no longer speak as freely. Even worse, it only takes one dude deciding to become a comedian or athlete now that the ladies have shown up to completely wreck the group dynamic. We are sorely lacking for men's spaces, it's a huge contributor to the "loneliness crisis" the media frequently talks about.

I've been involved with Scouting in some fashion for the past 30+ years. I'm currently on the troop committee for my son's troop. The most recent Youth Protection Training kind of blew my mind. With all the guidelines and "protections" in place, there is nothing to prevent two boys of similar age, in a dating relationship, from sharing a tent. Boys and girls can't share a tent, hard stop; Women leaders must be present; etc.; etc.

So many double standards and lack of clarity. For such "progress," they sure have a regressive attitude toward sexuality...

What do you think it takes away besides the feeling of a males only space? Also, do you think telling dads who only have daughters "just put them in girl scouts" is reasonable? Not to take anything away from the girl scouts but their programming is different from boy scouts (at least when I was a kid). If I wanted to do the same things with my daughter that I did in the scouts, we'd pretty much buy a boy scouts manual not sign her up for girl scouts

I'm a 50-year-old man and one of my great regrets in life was not being involved in the BSA. Now it seems the org is not what it used to be when I was a kid.

People don't realize the stress and anxiety, especially for young men and boys, of having to socialize with the opposite sex. Sometimes you just want to do stuff with the fellas and not worry about what some girl is going to think about you.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Allowing girls into a sacred male space will devalue the experience for all of the men. That was the whole point of having Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. To give the children/young adults a safe space with peers to learn and grow. That won’t happen when you cater to specific needs of different genders. As we all know, boys and girls have very different interests and skills.

So, I'll throw a disclaimer here that I have both a daughter and a son in the boy scouts. I had the same opinion that you did until I saw how it works here.

So in cub scouts it makes sense to be co-ed since it's family centric, when you go camping the entire family is there. Basically, the sisters of the cub scouts were joining in the activities (because no one's going to be the asshole that tells them that they can't join in even if they are already there), so why not make it official? It made it easy on me to go to just one organization with both kids, and you find yourself only volunteering your time with one place instead of performing a balancing act. I did give my daughter the option of doing girl scouts, but she thought their names and uniforms looked/sounded dumb.

So when my daughter crossed over to scouts, I was a little nervous about the troop structure; but it's basically a brother/sister troop setup where they rarely interact with each other. Usually they only see each other whenever they're pooling their resources for fundraising stuff or whenever they need someone to pull a camping trailer. Usually it's the girl troop asking the boy troop if a parent can pull the trailer, so I'll give you that one.

I understand what your point is and where it's coming from, but after seeing it I do think this is the way forward. I think that we have to be really careful in both allowing BSA to grow, but but doing so without taking away from it in the way that you're afraid of. The girl scouts, in all honesty, is a dumpster fire of an organization. There's a reason that not even the girls want to be a part of it.

I'm not a fan of scouting at all, but the blunt reality is that I think the solution to the current issue is creating independent scouting organizations. Fuck the BSA and fuck the Cookie Child Labor Scam.

I absolutely sympathize with those girls who want something more adventurous than selling cookies. At the same time I agree that abolishing male-exclusive spaces isn't the way to do it.

Showing my age here somewhat, but both Exploring and Venturing have been co-ed for decades. Frankly, there have always been girls who wanted to be part of mainline BSA because it gave them something that their local GSA organization couldn't or wouldn't and who came along on events. I generally think this is a good change, with the only better change of the last 20 years being the Mormons getting pissy and leaving.

Scouts Argentina has long been Co.Ed. being that we have from Beavers to Cubs, Scouts, Raiders, and Rovers, all of which have males and females often times joined in games and activities, no mixed parties except the leader and sub-leader one of course and still we can share the same activities and trainings, no one complains and have great memories of comradeship and stories to share, a lot have even got married and I've assisted to a Scout wedding as a kid too raising my flag in an arms salute.

I find it hard to describe how it all works in a language that is not my mother tongue, but I can't accept such an insult to scouting from someone who can't appreciate the true nature of union and adventurous life where a gender doesn't matter whether male, female, or any other pronounce we're Once Scout, always a Scout and part of a family and a group of friends sharing all together an incredible opportunity of a life experience in touch with the nature.

Scoutism is not a competition nor a comparison or a battle of the sexes. It's a lifestyle. Good hunt and long moons.

I totally agree. Tho I wish GS would let boys in. I took my kids to both and unfortunately the Boy Scouts troop we were in weren’t as organized as the GS. And the Cubs program was run by a grouchy lady. It was awful. Underfunded. GS had amazing activities like space ice cream once when they learned about eclipses, a bunch of themed parties and a dedicated building that had things like the entire place was converted into hogwarts, with a platform entrance, all the girls got their letter, sorted into houses and there were REAL owls brought in from the local animal refuge. It was so cool.

That year I ended up taking my son to the downtown Halloween party that was going on at the same time and he got to meet a huge Pikachu and pick out things at the local hobby shop with life size dinosaurs. But he always felt sad about not getting to be in the Hogwarts party.

People, particularly feminists have problems with men entering female spaces e.g biological men entering women's sports but will say nothing about women entering male spaces, in fact they openly endorse it. GSA were told repeatedly for years that they needed to buck up their ideas and provide the education and opportunities that the Boy scouts do.

They refused and only pulled their heads out once they realised they were haemorrhaging members after the Boy scouts provided those opportunities instead.

Too little too late.

They lacked the trainers and connections to change their direction.

IMHO, its good for everyone to be able to learn how to cooperate in a way that is not taught in schools or at home.

Also, it's an opportunity for genders to learn about each other so that future relationships will be based on a realistic and stable footing.
