Yeah, but it's tough from my angle since my blocking of posts is gonna be subjective. We already have a lot of posts get blocked by the spam filter on a daily basis, and honestly man, half the posts I see in there make me think "God dammit, I feel no need to approve this post because it's lame IMO" but at the same time it's like "Well, there's a chance it'll open up a good discussion." Some of the shittiest, most basic posts in the world end up getting 30 comments of good discussion, so it's hard for me to go and say "Ok, this post is objectively 'good,' but that one is 'shitty.'" Not to mention all the "good" (IMO) posts I've seen that get a handful of upvotes and not much else. There really isn't much I can do in those situations. We also don't have the power to move posts to other subreddits or anything like that- basically we can just add and remove shit.
But it all comes down to subjectiveness- from my POV, every single post about dealing with a specific girl, or talking about attractiveness issues, or simply talking about basic concepts, is a post I'd be happy to remove. But then we'd end up with like 5 new posts a day. Usually even in some of those basic posts, there's some unique aspect involved or something that makes me think "Alright, I know I can give some decent advice about this specific issue, and I bet others can as well"- even if it's a shitty post in itself.
The way we're doing it right now is we essentially allow most things that get submitted, regardless of how we feel about the content. Especially when I see a "shitty" post from a recognizable name (happens all the time), I don't want to disrespect the guy by removing the post and not giving him a chance to get some feedback. As much as I hate seeing rehashed shit all the time, the question (in my mind) is, who should I appeal to? Should I appeal to the guys on seddit who have seen this post before and are mildly annoyed by it, or should I allow the poster to get some advice even if he doesn't realize his post sucks ass? How am I helping him by removing the post? I can PM him and let him know why I did it, and maybe give him some advice on top of that, but if I decide to "mod" that way, you're gonna see about 90% of posts get removed.
I also gotta ask myself, could the average guy benefit from seeing the advice brought on by this post? If the answer's anything better than "NO WAY MAN," then who am I to decide what's good for someone else? I don't need anyone to tell me about inner game or kino, but I know a lot of people do (sometimes they still have questions even after reading through the sidebar). Then it's a slippery slope- if I allow a basic question about kino, when does something cross the line into "removal" territory? It's tough to say.
Then you also have the issue where there's already been some discussion on a post, and who am I to say "You're done!"? I'll allow that discussion to continue even if the post itself is absolutely terrible.
I mean maybe if the mods agree on a certain benchmark standard as a prerequisite for a post (it'll be an arbitrary benchmark, but it'll cut down on shitty posts), we can start enforcing it. It'd have to be pretty strict modding though if that's the case, and I don't like the vibe of that. It might be something like:
- If I have reason to believe this person hasn't read the sidebar, AND their post deals with oneitis/basic shit, scrap it.
But there's a reason why some basic-ass posts get hundreds of upvotes- because a whole shitload of people haven't seen it before. They get value from it. Is it shitty that they haven't taken the time to look through the sidebar (where they would've already seen that advice before)? Sure, but it is what it is. If the majority of people on seddit haven't looked through the sidebar and haven't read any material, aren't I providing more value to them by allowing them to be exposed to basic shit instead of removing it?
I know a lot of guys believe seddit should provide a specific function- FRs, advice on more "advanced" topics, and solid discussion about some of the broader topics. I believe that, too, but I also know a majority of sedditors (even regular participants) haven't even seen half the material I've seen. So where do I draw the line between what's good and what's bad? I'll give the Simple Pickup videos as an example. Lots of people don't appreciate the videos because they can't take much value from them, and they're highly edited. But IMO, there's value to be found if you "read between the lines," and I don't give a shit if they're edited- they're still funny, at the very least, and I'm glad I was exposed to em. Another mod might not feel the same way- which one of us is "right"?
Anyway, look over that wall of text and let me know how you feel. Today I've started removing posts based on my own opinion of their quality- so feel free to look at the front page and let me know if it looks better than it did yesterday. If you think we should start heavily moderating, so be it- I just don't really like the precedent it sets. I wish there was a better solution. You also gotta keep in mind, mods don't have that much power. All we can really do is add and remove shit.
