Joint custody, or shared custody, is the default option in three-quarters of US states. It's the presumption that shared parenting is in the child's best interest, with exceptions made when there is child abuse or neglect.

That's from a quick google search. I think over time we'll see shared custody becoming the default option in most states and countries. Yes, men shouldn't have to fight for shared custody. Expecting and holding both parents accountable to do their job - to parent their kids should be the default.

Usually when a man doesn't "fight" for his kids, people (mostly women and liberal men), will say "why didn't he fight" or "if he fights, he wins" type of stuff.

It could be that more liberal states fare better at giving equal custody than conservative states that support gender roles.

When people say fight, they mean JUST FUCKING TRY. Men will fight for every fucking penny in a divorce, but not one word out of their mouths when it comes to having to parent their kids.

This is just wrong. 90% of divorces get settled outside of court. So, men aren’t even having the conversation for full custody. We don’t take custody because it would be a detriment to our earning potential. We don’t want to be broke single father. We let women do that. Women are usually the ones closest with the children and they are the ones usually largely invested in the children on average so the court gives the children to them.

I was raised by a single father. My mom paid child support. The courts are here to protect the kid and my dad was broke as fuck. Hell I think my mom had to payed all the lawyers and fees too.

The laws have changed alot. I support that.

I helped my brother fight for custody 15 years ago because his ex was a junkie who moved her dealer boyfriend in and didn’t send their daughter to school. In those days it was a fight and i helped him financially. Nobody deserved that.

Now what the stats show is most custody issues are negotiated up front and the father doesn’t want more than partial custody, claiming “work”, which women overwhelmingly do as well. The stats show that when men DON’T just dump the kids on the mother, and ask for custody they overwhelmingly get it. Full custody unless agreed by both parties is hard to get.

What I’ve observed is that men don’t really want to do parenting work until they get another girlfriend to do it, or until their mom steps in to help.

When they were guilted into near 50/50 custody up front they immediately try to reconcile or line up another woman.

There are always outliers. One of my best friends is a fucking amazing single dad.

Don't marry women who want to be SAHMs. Don't enforce gender roles in your home and be an equal parent. That alone will help you immensly.

Most of the time when they don't fight they don't even want it. Not only don't they fight, they don't even show up. The default is shared custody and literal drug dealers get it. Anyone who actually wants custody of their children will go to the ends of the earth to get it. The mums pretty much always fight for it and you're not saying they shouldn't have to. But the dads aren't used to looking after their children for hours at a time and often don't want to start now.

I think that’s normally said in response to ‘the courts favour the women’. Obviously prolonged custody battles aren’t good for anyone, but there is a belief that there’s no point going to court because they’ll always award custody to the woman. But the evidence doesn’t support that.

Men only truly “want” their kids on the condition that their partner will be the one that changes their diapers, cleans up their puke/shit, cooks their meals, does most of the emotional labor, books their appointments, stays in touch with their teachers, etc.

Once they stop fucking the mother and realize they will now have to shoulder more parental responsibility a good majority of their interest in children pretty much flies out the window.

Some of men say they "faught" to see their children are using this as an excuse to be a deadbeat.

Men need to choose better if they don't want to get divorced.
