I'm at about 30k with a motion, filing, and now psych evaluations and we have barely started the actual divorce proceeding. We are about 3 months in. It's much worse when it's high conflict... My stbx is trying to remove me from my children's lives. I asked her to do the paperwork ourselves or with a mediator this was ok at first, but she became high conflict and on a power trip and refused. She picked an extremely expensive lawyer who is the absolute scum of the earth. Lies and manipulation of evidence and truth... Overall disgusting and just doing whatever he can to rack up a bill. And my attorney just follows suit

You know how much money I spent on my divorce? <$600 and a few nights of researching 😉 you don’t need a lawyer when you do your own homework and figure out all the loopholes.

Cause it's an emotional decision and people are willing to pay it so attorneys can "protect" you. In the end the laws are confusing and one could up losing big if you go at it solo. The best option to save time and money is to find an out of court mediator, but it's not too common cause of the emotional situation.

It's better to get out of a bad marriage, no matter the expense, than to throw away happiness and the rest of your life. If you share kids, focus on being a great and involved parent. It's a better example for them than being raised in a toxic or miserable two parent home.

I did the math of what was flowing in my bank account before the marriage compared to after the marriage. Even if I pay 20,000 now in retainer fees I will make it back plus extra in 6 months of being single.

I can only imagine. Mine only cost $650 for Filling Fees. Got Divorced with No Kids and we never combined Bank accounts or Credit Cards....My Ex Wife made 23K more than me and yet she had less savings and more Credit Card debt....There was a part of me that just said never combine so I didn't....Got to leave with all my own $$$.

It's hard to pull the trigger becasue it's acknowledgement of failure and a start of a really unpleasant project.
