Advice for Shaving Head?

Reddit View
June 8, 2018

I'm looking for some help in my continued quest to be attractive (and to not be unattractive).

So I started losing the hair on top of my head several years ago; I've tried various treatments (Rogaine, Nioxin, etc.) but nothing worked and now I've pretty much got the "horseshoe" look going on, with a bit of hair still clinging on top. A few months ago my barber recommended that I try to grow out the hair on top and see if a combover would work; I tried it but don't like the results. I'm strongly considering grabbing this thing by the balls and just shaving the whole thing and going full bald. This would be a really bold move for me and would pretty much shock anybody who has known me for any length of time, but I feel like I'm ready to shake things up and take some risks. I might even do it today.

I'm lifting but still not "big," and I generally think the full bald look is better on guys who have some real muscle on their frame (I'm not there yet), but I also don't like the way my (lack of) hair looks now and I'm running out of other options.

Has anybody tried a full head shave and not liked it? Any good results? For those who have gone full bald, any tips or advice on shaving it and keeping it looking good? Things I should look out for?

“I'm strongly considering grabbing this thing by the balls and just shaving the whole thing and going full bald.“

Do it. Own it.

Start with clippers with no attachments first. Get used to that, Then eventually clean shave.

“Looks better on guys with muscles..”

SMV starts in your mind first. Get out of the comparison paradigm, because you can never win in it.

Your inner world will show through- how you feel about yourself. The time is now faggot.

You're right - but reject444 is right too.

I've been shaving my head pretty low (e.g. an inch) for ages now, and I wasn't even losing my hair. Then I went through (1) terrible disease and (2) practically more terrible treatment, and I now have weird-ass, unhealthy hair that doesn't do so well. I shave it way lower now but I love it.

Keys to shaving and pulling it off:

  • Tan. I know, you don't want to get skin cancer. But why do you think black dudes look so good (and normal) with shaved heads?
  • Skull shape. You can't do much about this (unless you go to Korea where plastic surgeons do this). I got lucky in this department.
  • Muscles. And specifically a big neck. Helps a ton.
  • Be tall. Ideally. There's a dude who speaks at 21 Convention who is tall and has muscles and that dude has presence.
  • Don't let your head get all greasy and shiny it looks ridiculous.
  • Dress well. You can look like a beast with a shaved head when you dress well.
  • Ideally live in an area where it's the norm. Fucking everyone shaves their head where I live so it's no problemo.

MCT, you're right, but at the same time, pasty, skinny, white dudes - a few of whom play in the NBA - look lame as hell with shaved heads.

Your hair: This isn't working out. I don't want to be in this relationship anymore.

You: Baby, no! Please stay. I love you. I'll do anything! Just please don't leave me 😭.

Your hair: Stop crying. I have to go now. Good bye.

Maybe thats a dumb analogy, but you get the point. Fuck your hair and everything it stands for. Shave that shit!

As a man with MPB, this made me laugh my ass of. So much I wrote it out.

[–]TJC774 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy

Hey bro. 37 male here. I started losing my hair at 21, said fuck it, shaved it all off and have never looked back!

Think about it; do you want to be a Middle balding man, holding onto the little hair you do have, or do you want to be a confident bad ass who shaves his head?

It will be a shock at first, but get some sun on it and be confident and I promise you’ll never look back. People will OMG you, tell them you’re making some changes and they can touch it if they want! Girls want to touch it all the time!

Invest in a smart old school double edged safety razor, non of that Gillette tripped head shit, some barber cream and an alum block and go for it. You will cut your self a few times, but you’ll get it pretty quickly!

Embrace it, be a badass who shaves his head. Make shaving it a ritual and be confident with it! Fuck everyone else.

All the best!

Get a headblade and don't look back. If you are fit, yes bald looks awesome. But then again, anything looks better when you are fit.

[–]TaipanshimshonRed Beret3 points4 points  (1 child) | Copy

Bic it and see if you like it. What’s the problem ?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy

Decision paralysis. You should see him in the grocery store..."Store brand or name brand...shit...better ask reddit."

This would be a really bold move for me and would pretty much shock anybody who has known me for any length of time, but I feel like I'm ready to shake things up

So is this for you or for them?

Has anybody tried a full head shave and not liked it? Any good results?

You sound timid. Do you usually consult random ppl before making a decision about yourself?

[–]Reject444[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children) | Copy

So is this for you or for them?

Absolutely for me. Other than this thread, I haven't mentioned or discussed it with anybody. IDGAF if people are shocked-- I was just making the point that doing this would be far out of character for old BP me. People will like it or they won't; all that is really going to matter is how I like it and feel about it.

You sound timid. Do you usually consult random ppl before making a decision about yourself?

Maybe I am a bit timid about this because it's a big step and I don't want to screw anything up; my post wasn't really looking to answer the "should I or shouldn't I" question, but rather to try to get advice and learn from the experiences and/or mistakes of my MRP brothers to make this move in the best way possible, assuming I choose to do it. There's nothing wrong with gathering information before you do something you've never done before.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Whatever you have to hamster to yourself.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

Everyone on this message board is consulting random people when they post questions. So, DGAF if people call you timid. When I first shaved my shit, it shocked my friends and family. Then they got used to it and now can't picture me with hair. OP I don't know your backstory, but I bet this greatly increases your SMV and your wife or GF will take notice. Just like improving your body or wardrobe.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Awww. It's really nice that you're making him feel good. What a great world we live in.

[–]officerkondo0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I don't want to screw anything up

How do you think you would screw up shaving?

[–]CaliEd2561 point2 points  (4 children) | Copy

That’s why it’s called AskMRP

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children) | Copy

Question: I want to do X. How can I do this most effectively? Any recommended sites?

Question: I think I want to X because other people would think Y. I'm not sure though because I'm waffling. I know in the long history of shaved heads there have been people that love and hate it...but I'm too worried that I'll fall into the hate it category...can you make me feel good about doing it?

One question is for askMRP. The other is for askPeopleForValidationOfLifeChoices. Can you tell which is which and why?

[–]CaliEd2561 point2 points  (2 children) | Copy

Why didn’t you just say that in the first place? Judgement without explanation offers no education.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

Check out the other flaired guys as well. Sometimes we're generous and spell it out. But similar to the fact that you can lead a horse to can tell someone that 2+2=4, but until they have two things and add two more things, and see themselves that it results in 4 things, they don't get it. Reading something, and having your own mind coming to the same conclusion, are two different mental processes of understanding.

I can only show him the door. He needs to walk thru it.

When trying to get that annoying spot on the base, go up to down, not down to up.

[–]InChargeManRed Beret2 points3 points  (4 children) | Copy

Lol, just fucking with OP, but i wouldn't touch my balls with razor. It's electric trimmer all the way...

[–]drty_prRed Beret1 point2 points  (3 children) | Copy

I caught my bag in the clippers once. Holy fuck did it bleed. The most frantically I've ever ran around the house screaming, next to the time I sprayed Muskol directly into my eye.

[–]JDRoedellRed Beret0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I’ve done that. Fuck, that’s real pain

[–]InChargeManRed Beret0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Lol, yeah...

I use the beard trimmer setting 1, figure it's close enough :)

[–]SteelSharpensSteelMod / Red Beret0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I didn't realize after following the 60 DoD Hygiene post that I would have razor burn after that first time. That hurt like all get out. After the first time though its been smooth sailing.

My balls might have lycanthropy given how fast they grow hair...

[–]Reject444[S] 0 points1 point  (8 children) | Copy

Does everybody use a manual razor to keep their head shaved? Anybody had success with some kind of electric--either rotary or clipper style? How long does it take to shave your whole head with something like a Gillette Fusion?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I'm 48 now but since I was 24 I've used my electric shaver (Norelco has been a good one) that I use on my face to shave my entire head. I do it every 3 days. I suppose I could get a closer shave with a blade and shaving cream, but that is more time consuming. Also, when I was 24 I was rapidly losing my hair and my confidence was shot. I couldn't believe how much more confident I became once I started shaving my whole head. I felt like a badass and I gained a ton of confidence with women. It's a weird feeling -- but the moment you shave your head you are no longer "going" bald. To this day, some people even assume I could grow my hair out if I wanted to because they don't look close enough to realize I would have the classic horse shoe hair style if actually grew it out.

[–]Fritz_Frauenraub0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I just go to the barber and say "No. 1 guard" and he does the rest.

[–]WesternhagenWinner0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I have tried both a Wahl electric clipper and a blade, and I like the blade better. Gives a closer shave.

[–]mrpCamper0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

It takes me less than 10 minutes to shave my head with normal razor I get from Harry's.

[–]Reach180Red Beret0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

If I was balding, I'd go with the Ed Harris/Jason Statham buzz cut...a 1 or 2 guard... rather than the full shaved head.

I've got a full head of hair, but did the bic'd head thing quite a bit in my 20s. Doing it clean like that got to be a pain in the ass, I thought...and it usually looked better with a day or two's stubble anyway.

This point in my life, though, I'd rather not DIY it. The clean-up and knowing there aren't any missed spots would be worth the 12 bucks.

Just make sure you clean up all the hair above the shoulders. Keep the eyebrows & ears tidy. That shit really sticks out when there's no head hair.

[–]The_LitzRed Beret0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I shaved it all off 2 months ago. It suited my headshape but I was not 100% satisfied with the look, and it took more work to keep it off than I anticipated.

Don't be afraid to do it. It grows back!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Neil Strauss tried it and it seemed to work for him.

Just do it already and stop whinging. You're not a woman for who hair is really important.

[–]WesternhagenWinner0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I have been shaving my head for over a year. It is more work than I thought it would be to maintain a "clean" look. I get stubble even over the course of one day. I prefer using a blade to an electric. I don't use shaving cream (turns my skin into mush) because I get a better shave without it. The hardest spots to keep tidy, for me, are right over the ears.

[–]RonSwanson640 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I generally shave my head with a normal multiple blade razor in the shower every 2-3 days. No need for any shaving cream.

[–]mattizie0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Go for it. Muscle will come if you lift, eat and sleep.

Being bald will subconsciously make you more attractive than if you actually could pull off a "good looking" toupee or combover or grow just enough hair to be almost normal. Doing either of those things shows that you're insecure about your looks and yourself. Own it completely, and you'll surprise yourself.

Same thing with grey hair. Greying hair will look weird at times, and shit if you do a half arse job at dying it, but let it go, stop worrying about it, and all of a sudden you're a "grey fox".

This also goes for glasses. Either get contacts or laser, or own it. Don't get those minimalist, frameless, thin things that scream out to everyone that you're ashamed of your eyesight and trying to hide it.

[–]Bedtimeshine0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Train your neck. Tan, jawline, muscular neck... that’s how you make a shaved head look good... don’t fall for the beard shit. Beards are for pussies with weak chins and jawlines. A big neck is ten times more masculine than a beard. My head gets shiny so I use a matte lotion by a company called head lube... and a shiny tan head looks way better than a shiny pale head. I don’t use a razor... even if you bic it... you’ll still have a monks ring visible. It’s way quicker than using a bic type razor. I used regular clippers but I wanted something that cuts shorter so I bought a set of wahl five star balding clippers (a main stay at black barber shops)...that fucked my shit up in 2 seconds... hurt like hell and gave me a rash. So I searched for something that cuts at a length in between regular clippers and balding clippers. So I bought these... they’re perfect.

It’s just hair. If you don’t like how it looks after, it will grow back to its current shitty condition soon enough. This is a really low risk move and you’re spending too much time fretting over it.

[–]PersaeusRed Beret0 points1 point  (2 children) | Copy

hair grafting (aka Bosley's hair replacement) works great. only downside is significant one time expense.

[–]Reject444[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child) | Copy

Really? I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about it, being really painful or looking really bad a few years after the procedure.

[–]PersaeusRed Beret0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

i can't vouch for every place; and there are a lot of knock-off's that i would steer clear of; but yes Really

after being scalped in the back of your head (sedated) getting stabbed in the head several thousand times while your awake is sort of painful but they are providing local anesthetic. i'm not a pussy though so . . . meh.

i had it two years ago this summer and it still looks great. would totally do it again; and probably will someday.

[–]ravenRedwake0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

So I've been using women's disposable razors in the shower (working good so far), but I was wondering maybe if an electric shaver might be better for daily use? I haven't cut myself badly yet and I'm used to doing it in the shower but does anybody have any recommendations for a shaver?

[–]Reject444[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children) | Copy

And should I do this at the barber for the initial shaving, or just do it at home with my own clippers?

[–]TJC770 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

Do it yourself!

[–]Barvazon0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I shaved my head a couple of times. Kept the beard a bit thick. Looked badass as fuck, people did not even recognized me.

Your diet, sleep, vit-d are perhaps shit. Look into those.

[–]mrpCamper0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy

I've been shaving for several years. The first time I just told the barber to shave it for me with the clipper at lowest level. Eventually I started doing it myself and eventually went to a razor for a clean look.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
