Merkel's a conservative politician. I know she seems like a beacon of light and hope to disillusioned Americans, and I like her just fine too, but she's not a progressive or particularly left-wing. So it's no surprise that she won't call herself a feminist. I don't think her main constituency wants her to either.

It means nothing for Feminism since she's never called herself one. So nothing has changed.
Because not every women identifies as a Feminist.

In Europe that's normal. Feminism is a bit of a dirty word it seems. In the UK for example only 7% of people identify as feminists, yet over two thirds support gender equality (which when you consider the sizable population we have from the Indian subcontinent, isn't that low). In France the figures are similar, but I'm not sure about Germany.

Generally I will say if you mention feminism here the reaction is like Merkels, an eye roll. Rightly or wrongly it's viewed by a lot of people here as a movement of extremists like Julie Bindel, or a bunch of petty whinging about minor things that's not helpful to anyone.

She was born in East Germany... Of course she has no love for the dominant, Marxist, interpretation of feminism. Furthermore, she's a paneuropean conservative. Even if that makes her a lot more liberal than any American Republican; and probably many Democrats... total subversion of existing socioeconomical structures for it's own sake isn't her thing.

Lastly, frau Merkel herself being a STEMlady, I would say she doesn't have too much time for feelz over reelz.

In all honesty I was a bit suprised she didn't consider her a feminist. Her reasons why I'm not sure but I kind of respect her more now.

So apparently she's done this consistently. I don't know what her motivations are but I'm starting to find her a bit admirable now honestly lol. My german colleagues are still angry with the refugee debacle though.

Not surprising at all. Third wave feminism really does have bad associations regardless of what some here may claim. When people think of modern day feminism they think of autistic SJW screeching. She's smart to separate herself from it. Politicians are all about image and that's not a good one.

If you look feminsim's numbers have fallen massively. It won't effect women's rights whatsoever. Let's say for the sake of argument that in the past feminism was key for women's rights. You still don't NEED them today, any more than you need the ancient Egyptians to do modern trigonometry.
It's public name is getting worse and worse, based on the most damning evidence evidence of all: their own words and actions. Politicians understand this and will always try to float towards the warm end of the pool popularity wise. As pigheaded as Merkel has been in the past it's my impression that she always makes moves based on her perception of it being approved of by the majority.

Feminism is rapidly losing its relevance to society. Female are effectively equal to men in the west, if not privileged over men.

I mean, if you wanted feminism to continue to have influence despite its objectives being fulfilled, you'd have to do some really heinous stuff. Stuff like screeching over non issues like manspreading, doubling down on the delusion than men still have some kind of advantage despite evidence to the contrary, or spinning issues out of thin air like campus rape hysteria... but surely no one would be evil enough to do that... now would they? :)

I find that feminism is more common in the anglophone first world, outside it, women enjoy more privileges and rights, as there have been more female leaders in south Asia and the Middle East (Israel has had Golda Meier and Tzipi Livni; Pakistan's had Benazir Bhutto; India's had Indira Ghandi; Sri Lanka's had Sirima Bandaranaike; Bengladesh has had Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina) than the Five eyes (Australia 1, New Zealand 2, Canada 1 caretaker, the UK 2, and the US 0), for example.
