If you're interested in creating familial/generational wealth, then it would behoove you to marry a woman of means. If not, then continue attempting to build your singular wealth with no one to pass it along to other than the government.

You get a lot of tax benefits. If you care about your spouse you get stuff like hospital/jail visitation rights. And you also get legal rights like being able to sue for wrongful death, and you can't be compelled to testify against each other.

I don't believe women have anything to gain in marrying. All bad aspects of marriage apart from divorce hassles are the bad aspects of live-in, long-term relationships. Marriage is a bad deal for everybody, but on the other hand it makes performing actions as a family unit ridiculously easier. Also if anything bad happens to your SO, you can see them in the hospital and act with power of attorney if they are unable (I might be wrong on that last part there).

My parents married and then divorced. My mom didn't remarry, but her long term bf has been living with her since I was about 11 or 12, so marriage is definitely one of those old-world, useless Judeo-Christian cultural leftovers.

It depends on what you value. If you are religious and plan on having a child, then marrying would be your best bet because bastards are a no no to most mainstream religions. If you value friendship then marrying would allow you to be legally inseparable from your best friend. If you value stability then marrying would grant you a safety net when you fall on hard times.

Different strokes for different folks. If you don't see the point then don't bother.

For some men, the symbol of ultimate commitment and love is what makes marriage so appealing. That's not the case for every man and it's obviously not the case for you (or many RP men, from what I've seen).

Kids raised in a married family are much healthier. Thus, if you want healthy kids, get married. If you don't want kids, you shouldn't marry, as the cons far outweigh any possible pros to getting married in that case.

My brother's girlfriend had to move to another country for school/work and the paperwork for him to go with her became much simpler if they married.

My friend is a struggling musician and the parents of the woman she married gifted them a house. He would not have that if they were just dating.

Certain apartments only approve you moving in if you're married. If you have a career in politics being married seems necessary. Basically, people take married people more seriously, it consolidates you socially.

You can inherit your wife's properties, if she has that sort of thing.

Basically, making someone your family may benefit you, but it really depends on both your individual situations (assets, lifestyle, etc). It may mean a better quality of life/household if she earns more (which is very common today), but like all decisions in life it could go wrong or right.

Marriage is about commitment, and sharing, and building a life as equals. If you're scared that you'll lose half of everything you own, then you're not ready to be married. Its not about what the benefit solely to yourself is, it's about the benefits you can bring to each other through love, support, companionship, etc. If this us what you're hung up over, i.e. "What do I get out of it?" - then you shouldn't do it.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that most dudes who get married aren't doing it primarily for the tax cuts or other peripheral, extraneous benefits.

They do it because they're in luffff and they think their girl is in luffff with them and they want to spend the rest of their lives with them, growing old; they're following the script laid out by western society. Face it, most men in America do not marry pragmatically. You think things like transferring wealth and creating stable environments for their progeny are the foremost prospects on the minds of soon-to-be-husbands? Fuck no. They're following their dicks and their cultural expectations.

What they don't realize is that their girl's love for them is very much conditional and that divorce laws in america blah blah blah.

So, yeah, while there most definitely are benefits of marriage, most dudes who've fallen head over heels in passionate, orgasmic love, after realizing how easy it is for their wives to become disillusioned with them and take half of their shit, really start to care less about tax breaks and all of that other extraneous bullshit.

TerraCottaPi's question comes from that mindset, I think.
