I am extremely empathetic and consequently have to be very careful with who I keep close to me in friendship. I can stand from afar and think that someone made a stupid decision and brought a problem on themselves or that they are being overly emotional over nothing, but as soon as they are in front of me or express themselves to me directly I can't help but feel bad and want to help them. If someone I care about is unhappy and I'm around them I can't be happy. I will be constantly preoccupied with how they're doing and won't be able to think of anything but whether or not there's something I can do in that moment to make them feel better. It's probably why I'm such an introvert. I take on the feelings of others too much and it's emotionally exhausting.

My husband, whom I suppose qualifies as RP (he's the one who introduced me to RPW), is borderline robot and very rarely exhibits any negative emotions. He usually ranges from flat to generally positive, but rarely enthusiasm. It's very relaxing for me to be around him. His calmness is very soothing. He isn't good at reading people, but I would say he is fairly empathetic. Not so much as it relates to female issues because it's just not something he's experienced anything like, but he has cried because I'm crying if it's something legitimate like the death of a family member. He genuinely tries to understand me, in fact that is exactly why he looked into TRP. He doesn't really "get it" all of the time, but he usually responds appropriately to alleviate the situation, whether that be ignoring me, a reprimand, a hug, reassurance, or advice.

Maybe Red Pillers don't have empathy but no one has empathy for men. Lets look at a typical man's life from beginning to end.

Boys in school are treated as defective girls. Typical boy behavior isn't only discouraged its medicated. Toy guns, wrestling and fidgeting are all very boy things. They are also grounds for discipline from school administration and the prescription of mind altering drugs.
Boys face grading discrimination.
Upon entering university boys are labeled rapists by feminists trying to push the 1 in 4 agenda.
Men face employment discrimination because of gender quotas.
Girl talk is fine, but Human Resource departments have a tendency to crack down on boy talk.
Men get the short end of the stick in family law
Under Obamacare, men's healthcare premiums are used to subsidize more costly female healthcare.

Society doesn't give a fuck about men. Men have to deal with it. Men are told to man up. How many women genuinely care about any of those bullet points?

I have empathy for men who are put through the meat grinder. But as far as im concerned the social contract is no longer valid.

Do you really think you have to change someone else in order to make them want to have sex with you?

I realise that manipulation is a very broad subject, and does not have to be a bad thing. You have to change opinions that others hold for many good purposes, and manipulation cannot fully be omitted from that. At least not always, and sometimes it would yield in a worse result for all parties.

However, I greatly doubt manipulation has to happen for sex with a person to be desired. You do not necessarily have to change anything about another person to make them desire to have sex with you - and if you do not change anything, you do not manipulate.

Good markerters do not advertise trash to be bought, but create a product that satisfies the desires of the customer. Doing that is not manipulation. It is fulfillment of desires.

No. I also do not experience spontaneous negative emotions, any negative emotions I experience disappear with the stimulus and I can't hold grudges, the negative feelings recede immediately with the stimulus. Example, if I have an "emotional" fight with a loved one, and in the middle of the fight the loved one starts talking normally like nothing is happening, my negative feelings of say sadness or anger dissipate instantly and are really gone, they aren't repressed or brought out to refeel later. Same thing here, even though you and I have had ugly fights, this interaction isn't ugly, so I have no emotional response to it, even though we have a history. If in the next post you get ugly, I will have angry feelings, if you stop my anger will stop too

I wake up "reset" to basic happiness every day and don't experience causeless moods like "feeling blue" or "depression". The closest thing I have to a mood besides contentment or happiness is an occasional "flatness" at worst

I can see and recognize when people are sad or suffering but I don't co-feel it. I am buoyed by the happiness of others and made happier by it.

The fact is that only a minority of illegal immigrants enter the US because of real oppression and danger to their lives. The fact is the majority do it to make a better living for themselves and their families. The fact is that this shits on legal immigrants that do invest time and money to get into the US legally. The fact is that it changes the demographics in a way that the state might not want (think more educated legals vs less educated illegals).

If you are adamant about not forbidding anyone from crossing the border then just lobby for completely open borders.

I don't neccessarily want a completely open border, but we can handle illegal immigration a hell of a lot better than turning our Southern border into something resembling the Korean DMZ. I mean that's just humiliating. We're not fighting armed men in uniforms, we're fighting citizens who, yes, do just want to make a better life for themselves because Mexico just so happens to be extremely shitty.

By common standards, and even going by an in-depth discussion I had with CFRP, I would honestly say that I have above average empathetic ability, but average or slightly lower compulsive empathy.

My reasoning is this:

I score around 70 on EQ when I answer quickly and without any regards to faiths and principles. E.g. I'm willing to lie or go against rationality just to make someone feel better about their hair. For other questions/metrics, I can generally read emotions fairly well and can easily put myself in others' shoes due to my own wide range of experiences.

Once I slow down my decision-making and consider faiths/principles and give room for rationality to take place (e.g. My compulsive reaction to situations isn't just to make others feel better), my EQ drops down to average.

I have empathy. It's not compulsive.

It can, but rarely does it happen without me allowing it. I tend to anticipate when there will be an emotional situation and I guard against it most of the time. I can express sympathy with voice inflection and body language without actually feeling exactly what I know the other party feels. It took a lot of practice. I have to decide at the beginning of these interactions whether to guard or let flow with my true feelings on a matter; I don't think I could change my mind mid-way unless there was a clear topical change or the situation changed.

I think the best way to do this is to pass judgment on their emotions. If you reason that their emotions are not valid, (i.e. a result of ignorance - as it often tends to be the case, intentionally harmful to me, unimportant/inconsequential, I don't respect the person, etc.), then you can very easily understand their emotions without suffering with them. If you do open yourself to an honest vulnerability, you are not in control. It just takes a lot of trust to do that with someone, because emotions are fickle. I rarely do this with women, unless they are intelligent. Even then, it's not often. It's something I reserve for people who respect me and know that I have a vast depth of knowledge, experience, and general appreciation for truth and honesty - believe me, the irony is not lost on me - because it's a waste of effort and time to invest yourself in every single emotional connection. In its simplest form, it's just a cost-benefit analysis.

I wish I could show you how wrong you are. Some of the people I despise the most feel a deep connection to me, because I resist my own emotions so deeply. Let's call me a good and active listener. I'm not saying anyone can do what I do, and I sincerely don't enjoy bragging, but I am truly good at making people trust me and consider me a genuine person. For the most part I am, but the people I am forced to interact with on a regular basis are not getting the "true" me. The easiest example is with co-workers. I can't tell you how many of them bend over backwards to offer me favors, give me advice (whether good or bad), or tell me things that they wouldn't tell others they've worked with for years and years. People see me as discrete, honest, trustworthy, and they are completely at ease with me (disarmed is an interchangeable term).

they are clueless people, not the norm. most people feel when someone despises them. it makes sense that you would find the few people who could tolerate your particular psychology. or you are just deluding yourself as to how the people you know experience you.

again, only clueless people will trust empathetically blunted individuals. you think you are somehow made of different matter such that people can't pick up on how you really are? why would anyone call you out on being unempathetic? they probably feel sorry for you. are you able to emotionally pick up on when people feel sorry for you or hate you?

Haha, this is a pointless conversation if you can't take me at my word.

When I first started trying to "go through the motions" I was painfully obvious. As I said, it took a long time.

I'm not saying I give complete strangers this impression at every opportunity. But, I have an anecdote for you from last year before my divorce. My wife at the time, when we had one of the few opportunities to spend time together went through a drive through. I was driving, so I handled the order and the interactions. After we were on our way, she remarked with genuine surprise, "wow, you really know how to be nice when you want to." And that's from the inside looking out - my wife said that about me. She noticed the difference, because most of our genuine conversations, when I was truly empathetic and vulnerable with her was when she was high on ambien, so she didn't remember a damned thing.

What she didn't realize is that I'm that way at my work, too; I do this all the time, I'm just very good at it, not because I have a talent, but because I've conditioned myself.

Your dismissive and flippant responses tell me that you would easily fall into your own category of clueless people if you truly believe you've never been duped into believing you've had a connection with someone before.

I think the last time I slipped up between professionalism and being completely honest with people was in 2010 (yes, that's how long it has been). I was in a leadership role and in a moment of weakness I told one of my soldiers exactly what I thought, and he said, "really? Fuck you, man." And it's been tiny interactions like that over I'd say 12 years that this has been a constant effort for me.

No, you're confusing empathy with sympathy. And this research you're talking about clearly states that mirror neurons simply allow us to understand, not necessarily experience the same things.

What you're talking about is actually somewhat unremarkable in terms of significance - it's an introductory level psychology topic I learned about in high school. Mirror neurons are a survival tool. For example (and try this on groups of friends, it's hilarious how well it works), if you're in a group of people and you suddenly look dramatically to your side, people who notice will look in the same direction as you, completely subconsciously. It's because these neurons are designed to take thought out of the equation for time's sake. If someone is alerted to danger from stimuli that you don't perceive yourself, then you're not going to know that danger is coming. But if you have a well-developed cluster of mirror neurons, then you're going to come up to speed with your surroundings pretty quickly if you observe stimuli and response with members of your own species. (e.g. Meerkat videos).

Look, I appreciate your insistence that I don't have empathy, but at this point I just don't think you have all the facts, or you just don't know any smart and educated people irl for a proper frame of reference.

empathy is orthogonal to intelligence (read up on big five accommodation and openness to experience). so being smart and educated confers no benefit to at least a personal understanding of empathy which you may lack. but if you want to compare the education of our irl associations on the internet, ok, what are yours?

and cofeeling is empathy. sympathy is feeling sorry for someone, empathy is feeling the same thing as someone. are you really sticking to this argument that human being can't pick up on when others are happy or sad or some other feeling? why is it important for you for that to be true (beyond my suspicion that you are weak in this area so you have trouble believing this skill exists)?

I believe you've used a colloquial understanding rather than a dictionary definition of the words.

The ones who make you *sympathize with them are great at acting, because the majority of them don't feel anything like what they make their audience feel. And before you bring in the idea of method actors and actresses, these people shoot scenes completely out of order; your perception of their emotions is NOTHING like what they're feeling, because you're watching them scene by scene over months and months of work.

i agree but the people that can be tricked are the ones with low empathy skills/radar. i do think one can improve if one is weak in this area (like in anything else) but it's hard to improve on something you don't believe exists.

a good theater or movie actor becomes the person they are portraying, the order of shooting doesn't change that. why do you think people prepare for roles, or have to get into character, or stay in character on set. why do you think really great actors are so rare. why do you think so many great actors have identity issues. actors also rely on the audience suspending disbelief, putting themself in an agreeable suggestible state.

a good con artist can accomplish something similar, but it's hard and it's never 24/7, they always get exposed if they play the con too long, which is why people like that rarely have long term relationships (except with other con men, who they probably don't trust... or really clueless helpers).

so i agree some people can be faked by people who are very good at faking (entirely pretending to be that fake identity, which if done well means becoming that person) but no one can maintain the ruse long term (without either being exposed as a fraud or entirely becoming the person they are pretending to be).

I resent this. My mother left my shitty alcoholic father when I was 1. I'm her only child. She went to school, and works a white collar job. She has worked her whole life only to declare bankruptcy at 50 years old.

She never asked for a penny of child support from my father because she's too proud, he barely works anyway, and she didn't want to be one of those single mothers who are draining tax dollars when there are "people who are worse off than her". So seeing people complain about single mothers when I know mine would do anything for anyone, and is always trying to give people whatever she can, it just makes me mad.

I've also known mothers who are like the ones I assume you don't have empathy for. Ones who live in government subsidized housing looking after their 4 kids, and don't work. However, here at least, once people get into that situation it is impossible for them to get out until their children can take care of themselves. The cost of day care wipes out whatever you make, even if you only have 1 child.

As outlined here, there are numerous reasons I have little empathy for single mothers.

First, you have a child. This means it's a packaged deal. The child will always come first. A good thing really, but most men would rather rather come first unless its their own child. I wholly believe most men who marry single mothers are 100% Beta Bucks, whom the women in question likely wouldn't have thought twice about before becoming a single mother.

Second, you have a poor track record with relationships

You were once in a relationship, which you saw as serious enough to have a child in. That relationship failed.

Now, this is either your fault, his fault, or some combination of the two. If it's your fault, you are a bad relationship partner. If it's his fault, you are a poor judge of character and a bad decision maker. If it's some combination of the two... well, you guessed it.

Now if she was young, as most single mothers are, she decided to have child with little so no options to support it. If the father left, again, what does that say about her decision making and choice of men?

Also, she could have had an abortion. If she's pro-life, dating her is a major risk should there be an accident.

As for single fathers, men rarely get sole custody of children in divorces at the worst; they have shared custody, and often not even that

Hm. My mother was sexually abused as a child as well as violently assaulted so many times that she become accustomed to seeking comfort in men who assaulted her. When she was still a teenager my father, in his early 40's, wooed her just long enough to knock her up, and then beat the shit out of her. He wanted to keep his children, he also wanted to beat his children. And his teenage girlfriend.

My father hated women because he felt inadequate. His rationalization for his violent behaviour? So who's to blame in this situation here? The mature adult male who knowingly took advantage of a traumatized teenage girl? Or the traumatized teenage girl for having the audacity to allow a predator to knock her up not once but twice?

Umm...yes? She's an adult. She deserves some of the blame. If you want to get treated as an adult, you have to take on adult responsibilities and whatever consequences that follow. Once something goes wrong, you can't just go "everything was out of my control, treat me like a little helpless lamb".

If you ask me, it's analogous to punishing the driver of a getaway car as equally as the robbers inside the bank.
