The other option they can surely afford is an au pair, nanny, or some other childcare service that takes the responsibility off her plate.

Assuming the $40,000/year is a clear profit she's making from her business, or a salary she's able to pay herself...that's not nothing. That's a lot more than a "hobby" or whatever insulting thing he's throwing at her. She is absolutely contributing financially to the family, she is NOT a housewife or a SAHM. She's working so many more hours than he is, it's ridiculous.

It might be a gay couple? I don't know. I only had to skim to see that a man is earning more, and a man made this post. A lower-earning woman isn't ever going to ask the man to be PRIMARY caregiver. Frankly, even a higher-earning woman isn't going to ask that either. Mothers typically just do their fair share with the children... without making a fuss about it on the internet. It's only men, particularly money-obsessed men, who try to use their salary as leverage to be lazy parents. If this was a lesbian couple, they would for sure just hire help to take care of any overbearing burdens. It's only men who are ever this stingy and demanding.

Yeah... My forever ex earned more than me and I paid 50%. The smidgen of FDS I had in me stopped me from performing housekeeper duties so the house was a mess half the time. But I delivered free emotional labour. For the usual reasons I didn't know I could just leave.

He declared regularly that his job was more important and he was the breadwinner. He tried constantly to 'debate' me into deprioritising myself in every area, even to try to persuade me into sacrificing my morning work prep routine to iron his shirt and pack him a lunch while he slept. I never got a bite of that bread though.

I used to have this argument with my ex, although it was less about the money earned than it was about the difficulty of the job vs. time spent. He was a teacher, I worked in hospitality. We both worked 40-50 hours a week. His take was that I should do the lions share of the housework because his job was harder. My take was that we both had the same amount of free time at the end of the day, so why should I spend 80% of it doing chores to his 20%? Unsurprisingly, he also wanted me to do up a chore chart 🙄

If you're working 40-50 hours a week, then how are there 60 hours of childcare needed? What are you doing for 10 hours that's not work and you can't involve your children in? Not to mention, are the two parents working the SAME exact 40 hours? Does one start earlier and the other start later in the day? Then one takes over while the other is at work.

If anything, I'd guess that they probably need closer to 30 hrs of childcare per week. Which brings the next question, why is a family making $440k squabbling about who is going to take over for child care? You can pay a nanny like $20/hr for those 30 hrs and it wouldn't make a dent in your income. Child care/education is an inevitable part of a family budget. By having a nanny, you end up paying her about $20-25k per year. If your lower income partner leaves their business, you end up losing $40k to the household income.

Just from a look at the numbers, without even accounting for nonquantifiable things like emotional fulfillment, strong role models for the kids, potential company gains, it doesn't make sense to expect the lower earning partner to give it up for child care.
