I completely agree with what you have to say, but I feel like too many people misinterpret the idea of traveling in order to use it as an escape from the environment that they left rather than going out and actually experiencing the culture of the countries they visit.

I got back from a 4.5 month solo trip of Europe in October and I leave for South America indefinitely just after new years.

I learned so much about myself it was unreal. It was overwhelming at times the realisations I came to. But there was a lot of time to really soul search without distractions and process these things. I learned about my strengths, but more importantly I learned about my weaknesses and shortcomings. I learned to read people very well. Body language, motives and red flags. I learned that I could rely on myself for my own happiness and to be able to trust that I could handle anything that was thrown at me. I worked on fixing my awkward social ticks. I worked on approaching random people. I learned how to say no. I learned what makes me happy. I met so many interesting girls and learned what types of personalities really interested me. I learned about how I want to live my life.

This was probably to most educational thing I've ever done, at least in regards to personal development. And when I got back home...damn. I appreciate my family and my good friends so much more but at the same time I also kind of pity them because they are so stuck in their ways. Like they're living life with blinders on. I appreciate my country and how lucky I am to live here.

And the girls. I did well in Europe but when I got back home, it was like the veil had been lifted. I realised so many of the mistakes I had been making. Suddenly I was speaking and acting with a confidence I had never had before. Girls that had friend zoned me in the past have now become plates. When I go out, it's fucking ridiculous how easy it is for me to approach, to control conversations, to be seductive. And now because of this I have such an abundance mentality that they want me even more.

I still have a lot to learn and a ways to grow but going on that solo trip was by far the best thing I ever did for myself. And like OP mentioned I have caught the bug and want to keep doing it. I can't recommend enough how important it is for oneself to travel solo!

Some of the most important personal growth I've experienced has been on the road.

Taking time to step away from everything and live out of a backpack on your motorcycle gives you a lot of perspective.

Motocamping is my favorite. Stop in random small towns, eat at the local diners and talk to people in the coffee shops, and get out and clear your mind at the campsite.

It's like taking a rest day from the gym. It's important to lift and eat right, but your body and mind need to heal and grow as well.

I travel for work... and the idea of loneliness was something i addressed and obliterated, realizing that its linked to boredom and an addiction to human interaction. The normal lives everyone lives and tell themselves they need is a trap riddled with addictions they cannot walk away from. Perhaps comfort itself is the addiction, creating mental pain the moment your bubble is popped, or tolerance and hedonic adaptation sets in. Realizing that you can reframe your mind and your emotional reality was one of the best outcomes from this.

Btw im curious... did you have a strategy for socializing?

Traveling alone does some something special to your character that traveling with buddies or to a country where you don't stick out like a sore thumb can not do.

I think your post touches on what another post here mentioned recently, the rite of passage ritual. We don't have them anymore for men. We don't have things that test us and transform ourselves into 'men' the same way we used to. We are naturals at overcoming challenges and rites of passage allow us to see how good we really are at survival and overcoming the obstacles in our path. I don't think solo travel is necessary for this, but is one way to test our mettle. You are absolutely right though that our lives don't test us, and to be the best version of ourselves we have to push beyond the easy patterns of comfortability modern living affords us.

As a side thought, the military is maybe the only overt rite of passage test a man can take in modern western society. Even this is optional.

Great stuff.

Problem is some people travel and still look for comforts. Example: going to Amsterdam, my friends wanted to go to McDonalds. Of all places, instead of experiencing some local restaurants.

If you can avoid this trap and actually experience the local culture, it is beyond valuable.

From California here. Really badly want to travel the US and other countries solo but my parents wouldn't let me, plus I haven't the slightest clue as to where I should begin. We almost never go on vacation but when we do it's only for like three days because my parents work so much, and we just do the basic touristy hotspots. It'd be nice to go on my own, that way I wouldn't feel inclined to just appease the people with me and go wherever/whenever they wanted.

I recently bought a cheap fare (off Scotts Cheap Flights, highly recommended) and went to a totally random country for a few weeks, it was so great. It really gave me a respect for that old cliche that travel holds a mirror up to your own culture. Eagerly planning next trip.

Leaving the country when I went backpacking, especially when traveling through countries in southeast Asia, such as Thailand and Laos it was a real shock to the system and it showed me how blessed I was to have a life in New Zealand where some of my biggest problems were stressful emails.

We have a beautiful little country, but returning to NZ after travelling solo around Asia it really does feel like coming back to a small town after visiting the big city. Highlights the cliquishness, negativity, low work ethic, sense of entitlement and narrow-mindedness. Feel like I need to get out of here for at least several weeks every year or two.

In terms of personal growth it has given me a lot more perspective on what is really important in life and what problems really are. I feel far less lonely when traveling alone than I do after a year of living in Auckland and living a (mostly) routine life.

I plan on doing this when I graduate in May. I'm 26, so I'm not exactly in my early 20's, but it's all the same. I have passive income to survive for a while, cheaply. Once I come back, I plan on doing what MadKat talked about with the motocamping across country. I'll settle somewhere eventually and get a job. Great post.

I highly recommend this. Did this briefly between College and my first/current job and it was an utter shock. I was unaware of the red pill during that trip but I swallowed a bunch of them on that trip. Came back a better man willing to take risks. I always try to step out of my comfort zone every 6-9 months now when I take 1.5 weeks off from work.

I went through Europe with a college friend in my 20s, I wish I would have gone alone. It would have made me push that social solo comfort zone, and I would have met a lot more females. Its been exactly ten years in January, and Im headed out on a new adventure soon, as a mark of a lot of new positive changes I have recently made in my life.
Somewhere with less english, and more discomfort. Thanks for sharing, this hit home for me. And is in line with so many of the good solid pieces of advice I have gotten here. Thank you TRP!

Excellent Post. A solo trip could also be called a "grand gesture".

There's too much advice out there focused on how to change your comfort zone while staying in your existing life. As if blowing up your comforts while having the same life is supposed to accomplish anything substantial.

You are who you are today mostly because your environment is nudging you constantly towards the decisions you're making. You can't will yourself to be a totally different person without putting yourself in different places, and away from your friends and family for some time, even a short vacation.

Earlier this year I planned a two and a half months backpacking trip around Europe. I got back from my trip in October. I'm an introvert and had the time of my life. Those pictures and memories will be with me forever. And I don't have Normie book or any other social media so those pictures are for me and when I share them with people in person... I did nothing for the Facebook likes. traveling alone is awesome because you do everything what you want, when you want, and it makes you meet new people and really learn the places you go. I seriously had a blast, saw some amazing things, and met some great people, fell in love a few times. And I don't care what you might think it's still great to travel as an American people seem to like us. But I've always been very proud to be American and I think I project that confidence. I remember a German girl actually told me "I wish I was as proud of being German as you are American. I really respect that." But i digress.

10/10 alone traveling is best traveling.

The only thing that really I guess stops me from traveling solo at this point in my life is that I want to get my finances and career in order (currently in a contract position, so not getting paid for days I take off sucks and looking for job with benefits and PTO).

Also, the fact that people will think it's weird that I am traveling somewhere by myself. I think in the next two years or so, I will travel solo. Why stop yourself from exploring places, because you have nobody to go with?

I'm planning a road trip this coming summer for this very reason. I'm taking three months off school to hit 48 states back to back in my little Honda Civic. Going it solo, but also hoping to meet some sick people along the way. I'm going to try couch surfing for a bit, and lots of camping.

A big part of travelling by yourself is to remember to journal. After my last trip I felt like I had grown so much, but I wasn't able to put it into words after. Just had a vague sense of self improvement. This time, I'm going to keep track of my thoughts and feelings, and really spend some time being introspective. Hopefully when I get back I can do a bit of a field report and talk about the things I've learned and maybe inspire some other people to do the same.

Totally agree with the traveling. Some of my greatest personal growth happened when I lived in 4 different States in 4 years across the US, all without any family. I got to live with people from vastly different backgrounds, try different foods, social skills became vastly better, gained some perspective I wouldn't have gotten any other way. Could write a whole book about everything I learned.

Reading posts like this makes me want to travel more, and not for all the glamorous shit that girls always want to talk about when speaking of traveling. Talking about beaches, and clubs, and "omg this French guy had the cutest accent" etc.

People don't realize how different it feels when you are removed from the regular routine that you are accustomed to

Something I'd suggest from the book MODELS is that emotional vulnerability is tied to the highest possible confidence. Striking up a conversation with a stranger is scary when you aren't actively making the connection confidence with emotional vulnerability. Socially putting yourself out there makes you emotionally vulnerable, but the thing is, almost all strangers will have a pleasant conversation with you because there is shared humanity in that; and the strangers who give you negativity have issues that don't even relate to you.

In the end its just small talk or asking a question, its not The World's Greatest Conversation, or me in my daydreams of talking in a bar with the Kriya Yoga guy about meditation and enlightenment..

Did 30 countries solo in hostels it was awesome, my only regret is not going into active war zones. I was in Turkey with a few bombings here and there but I was too "safe" feeling still. Needed more extreme adventure

I completely agree with what is written here. Before stumbling into the redpill I was a natural MGTOW. What I started doing is crossing continents on motorcycles. Just you, a bike and some camping gear. I rode as far North as I could, I rode South into Mexico in the areas where we are told not to go. On these trips, I did not give a crap about anything(well almost anything), taking risk, going into the unknown, living life, finding myslef. Now, today when I am faced with a tough situation, I tell myslef: well this cant be worse than that time I broke down in the middle of cartel land in Chihuahua Mexico. And this is what confidence is made of, knowing you can get your shit together and pull yourself out of bad situations wether it be physical or "social" danger. The things that people tell you not to do, DO THAT. Stop living the life you are told to live, live the life you would live if you had no fear, then the fear will go away.

from america.I traveled solo across europe for 4.5 weeks before I started medschool (was 21). Best times of my life, serious. I lived in hostels, even though I could afford hotels because it was literally living in a dorm with travelers and locals. Crazy parties everynight (sparties, bar crawls, hostel orgies,etc), amazing beer/food, cool castles and adventures. I would literally meet people in the hostel, say lets go explore, and ended up on a new adventure every day/night. And don't give me a bs excuse about money, the whole trip costed me 6000$, which I saved up while in college working two jobs over a year.

tl;dr... Hiked and explored so many cool places, did amazing things, hooked up with so many women, and just had an amazing time. Traveling solo forces u to meet people, become very social, being independant, and in general a better people person!

I agree with you but it doesn't necessarily mean leave the country and go overseas. I travel solo all the time, but within the confines of the United States.

Traveling overseas is expensive and honestly there is nothing overseas worth seeing that can't be seen here in the states.

The biggest benefit to traveling by yourself is being able to do whatever the fuck you want, whenever you want. I went to Las Vegas by myself a few months ago and on the plane ride there, there were 5 guys in a group all arguing over what to do when they got there. I encountered the same problem at the pool the next day - a group of guys who couldn't all agree on what to do/where to go.
