I think it's partially because of the way women are enhanced in the media -- magazines, tv shows, insta, etc. We rate ourselves against gorgeous models who starve themselves and get plastic surgery and hair extensions and wear multiple layers of "no makeup makeup" to make themselves look perfect. We're rating our natural bodies and faces against exceptional beauty which has been artificially enhanced to perfection. Of course we're going to give ourselves lower numbers.

Men, on the other hand, compare themselves to...men. The muscles and the perfect head of hair might not always be natural, but for the most part, everything else is. It's a much more achievable standard of beauty.

Men overestimate themselves, in: attractiveness, height and intelligence. I believe this is a societal issue because many are treated as being worthy and important.

Literally all the American guys on OLD I’ve met in person lied to me about their height. I noticed it’s American thing. Instead of increasing their height, they should work on decreasing their weight.

Women tend to underestimate their attractiveness and men tend to overestimate their attractiveness.

Just like the incel scenario, a 3/10 man thinks he is a 5 so he approaches a 7/10 girl (but in his mind she is a 5.5), she is not interested and repulsed by him so she rejects him and dates a 8/10 man instead so he goes on reddit to type "All women love chads!!" when truly it is not a girl going above her league but a cute girl dating a cute boy.

I've dealt with that before, a 2/10 guy (yes, he was truly a 2. I can't name a single attractive feature except for his eye color) rated himself a 6/10. Not even joking.

Men always get rated so high. Just take a look at the Rate Me subreddits. Angelina Jolie would probably be given a 7 out of 10 at best even though she is drop dead gorgeous. Meanwhile Michael Cera would get 8 out of 10. It's fucking ridiculous.

Their egos honestly need to be taken down a notch.

I absolutely hate that number ranking system. I find things attractive in men that most other people wouldn't, there is no universal beauty. Even people like say, Johnny Depp who I might think were totally conventionally attractive, that doesn't mean I am attracted to him, so the number system is useless.

On the other hand, I think men have an easier time than women because attractive men are so rare, whereas most young women are good looking. So the men have a lower standard to meet to be considered good looking. And yeah, tbh their overestimate themselves in every capacity. I work in a particular industry where men think they are amazing and 90% of them are so bad at what they do it's embarrassing.

Yes. At the same time they like putting women down like crazy but if someone criticises something about them they get all offended. Many men have a fragile ego.

While I do agree they tend to rate themselves higher, there might be other reasons in your particular situation. Just because they said 8/10 doesn’t mean they truly believed so. It could be that they actually thought they were 2/10, but said 8/10 to save face or something.

I try to picture myself in the situation: if a tinder guy asked me to rate my appearance, I would either ghost, or unmatch, or say that I’m a 12/10 then unmatch. It’s not because I truly think I’m a 12/10, but rather I personally don’t find such a question worth answering, especially when it’s from some online stranger. But idk maybe that’s just me

In my experience (and of course, the plural of anecdote is not data):

-most very hot (9/10 or 10/10) guys know they are extremely hot. They have lots of success with women and often skate by on their looks and charisma.

-most good looking guys (7 or 8/10) think they are average, especially if it took them a while to "grow" into their looks. I ascribe this to the fact that guys have a harder time judging the relative attractiveness of dudes and so tend to think "well I'm not super hot but I'm not hideous so I guess I'm average??"

-average guys (5 or 6/10) think they are as attractive as the 7/8s and are confused or in denial about why they aren't dating "hotter" women. Again, I think this is because they think of 7 or 8/10 guys as also average and so they expect the same level of success.

-below average (3 or 4/10) guys either go totally above and beyond in other areas to try to make up for it (jobs, personality, hobbies - rare!), give up on women entirely OR live in denial/get angry

-1 or 2/10 is really quite ugly...actually I don't think I've known enough men in this category to make an observation.

i didn't ask anyone that on social media or dating apps, but judging from the guys in my circle of friends, i can't think of even just one who doesn't have deep insecurities. there are one or two, who'll act cocky. but that's an act to hide the fact that they're lacking self esteem.

obviously, that's just my experience with my friends, so it's not at all representative.
