I saw this when the news came out a few years ago. Horrified, but not surprised based on what other people (who have lived there) have told me about systemic problems there preventing women from being independent. Just another day under patriarchy 🙃*

I still remember the day I read this and my heart broke and I cried thinking about all those young women who had hopes and dreams of being doctors, studied so hard, and got cheated but thought THEY weren’t good enough!! And the men were allowed to go on thinking they were smarter and superior students! This story genuinely radicalised me.

Yes, let's prevent female students from becoming doctors because they MIGHT get pregnant. Instead of, idk, making a community where men/ husbands did their fair share of childrearing so their wives didn't have to quit.

Generally if they start a family they are forced to quit their careers, childcare is non existent in Japan.
