I'm sorry this is so long, I just- I've been screaming inside my head for a long time now and there's a part of me that hopes someone here will understand.
My mother considered herself an outspoken feminist and activist. She was beloved and admired by many people around her for her "moral fortitude" and dedication to helping people. In the left-leaning community that I was surrounded by growing up, she was a figurehead and had some notoriety for her political writings, her work as a medical professional, and later her time as a post-secondary educator. If there was a committee, she was on it. If someone was asking for volunteers, she was the first to sign up. But while she maintained the image of a caring, tolerant woman for outsiders, at home behind closed doors, it was a different story.
It was never okay for me to be a boy. Men were evil. Men were responsible for all the world's problems. I was going to grow up to be a rapist or a violent criminal. I wasn't allowed to be friends with boys, lest they influence me to be bad - but of course I didn't have any friends, because what girl would want to friends with a yucky boy like me? I had been born disgusting and only she could teach me to be better. My job was to serve her, to learn at her feet so I could atone for the sins of all men who had come before . And for a long time, I really believed her. I grew up thinking that I was born evil and only she could teach me to be better.
She would bring me around to her circles and events and publicly lavish me for being so sensitive, so quiet - around her friends, I was a "good boy", a shining example of how feminist parenting could raise boys to be different. At home, any argument or disagreement was quickly shut down with the cold stare and the familiar refrain - that I was the aggressor. She had to hit me if I yelled, because I was the aggressor. She had to lock me in the closet if I cried too loud, because I was the aggressor. I can remember the terrible shame I felt that somehow no matter how hard I worked I couldn't stop being bad. She used to say often that it was lucky that I had her as a mother, because only she had the grace to love me even though I was so difficult.
At meals, I was only allowed to eat so much - it was important to her that I stay small and thin. If she thought I was getting too heavy, I would be sent to bed without dinner for a while. Wanting to eat more was "me trying to take up more space than I deserved". I quickly learned how to save granola bars from my lunches at school, to hide in my room so I didn't go hungry later. She kept my hair long - I was absolutely NOT allowed to cut it. She was so angry when I finally did cut it short when I was 16 - how could I hate her so much that I had cut my hair, just to upset her? It was always like that - as far as she was concerned anytime I did something for myself it was an attack on her.
Her dream for me was that I would do ballet, but I had 2 left feet and was never good at it - after much grief, she decided she could settle for me being an academic and started calling me her "little absent-minded professor". She started me doing IQ tests when I was 6, excitedly telling me and everyone else that I was a genius - but privately being sure to let me know that I would never be smarter than her, never better than she was.
It took me a long, long time to admit to myself that she had sexually abused me. She had raised me to believe that women weren't capable of that - and she was an excellent manipulator. If I didn't want to touch her or look at her, it was my problem - I needed to learn how to appreciate the female form, become comfortable with what a "real woman" was like. If I protested her touching me, I was making a big deal out of nothing. When I tried to get her to stop bathing with e, well into my teens, she was hurt that I would reject being close with her, saying it was normal for a mother to bathe her child and be close with them. My body was always commented upon - she was fond of my hips, or my baby face, or my long legs. She told me often that she was happy my penis stayed so small, or that I didn't grow much taller than her. Well into my early 20's she would grab at me intimately, stroking me and not letting go - or she would strip me, to see what kind of underwear I was wearing.
When I started dating a girl in highschool, she hated my girlfriend and always complained that I loved my girlfriend more than I loved her - and no matter how much I tried to tell her I loved her, she wasn't happy until we broke up. "You don't need to be in a relationship," she told me after, "You aren't very good at it anyway."
I finally managed to escape from her when I was 23. I'd tried before but I had been so dependent on her, so intertwined with her that sooner or later I found myself back under her roof, under her control. I dropped out of university, and moved all the way to the other side of the country. In the 4 years since then, I've only seen her once, at my grandmothers funeral. I've been to therapy a little bit, but nnever could bring myself to talk about any of I have a psychiatrist. I take medication. And I'm almost one year sober after many years of secretly abusing alcohol and marijuana. But I have no idea how to make friends, or even just have a casual conversation. I'm very scared of women and I don't feel like I know how to talk to men. People at work comment frequently that my voice is very soft, that I seem like a nice, gentle young man, and I hate it because it just reminds me of how vulnerable I feel. I find myself wishing sometimes that I knew how to be more masculine, but I don't even know how to let myself buy a t-shirt with a skull on it without feeling ashamed (I swear I could hear her in my head, "Violent imagery is for misogynists!"). And even though I wish it didn't, feminism triggers me. I can't trust it, don't know how to interact with it without feeling like I have returned to the rhetoric of my childhood, where underneath the guise of tolerance and activism there was only pain. And I feel like I can't talk about it, like no one will understand, like I'm not supposed to be the way that I am, like no one will believe me or care - so I keep myself isolated because it's the only way I know how to feel safe.

"We're here to offer support for the OP, not debate feminism".
Uh, in case the moderator hadn't noticed, the OP's mother was a feminist and used it to hurt him.
Considering feminism as an ideaology always held passive-aggressive contempt for ALL men since 1848 when The Declaration of Sentiments decreed that it was MEN as a whole oppressing women, I'd say correlation equals causation in this case.
Too bad everyone in that thread are cowards to confront this fact.
[–]TehReedster89 31 points32 points33 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Right. That's so pathetic.
I am 100% positive that OP was the one who started a discussion about feminism. How does this mod even pretend what he said is reasonable?
[–]Doofchook 29 points30 points31 points (3 children) | Copy Link
Yeah seems silly to lock it, I did notice OP didn't mention any father or even second mum. The mum just seems an unfit parent that is hiding behind feminism to suit her extreme man hating, definitely not healthy for anyone Ivolved.

His mother was a feminist. Feminism from the start has been harboring anti-male contempt from its early inception.
You can't convince me with a straight face that statements like "The history of mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpation on the part of man toward woman, having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over her." don't lay bare the bigotry and prejudice for all to see and that there's no link between this, it's core theories, and what his mother did to him.
If we don't come down hard on this, you can bet there will be, and probably are, more boys going through the same harsh treatment by their single mothers, fathers, or both who adhere to feminist tenements.
[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Eh, they didn't only mute anyone who commented on the feminism - which undeniably is a crucial element to what he was saying - but in my case they even made me out to be an offender against the op, saying I was "deriding" him. The idiots don't know the meaning of the word

The good old no true scotsman.
Meanwhile, they're throwing a fit if you dare to say a "not all men" or whatever else, assuming that it means that yes, you're one of the problematic ones. Spot the hypocrisy.
"When a feminist does something bad, she's not a TRUE FEMINIST™, but when any man dare to say that [x "toxic" thing] is not a "man" thing or a male gender role thing, it's just a proof that the man is one of these!". Great logic here.
[–]girraween 42 points43 points44 points (6 children) | Copy Link
I think this is so dangerous. When you can’t even debate the bad side of feminism without it being chalked up as, “oh but they’re not real feminists”, that’s bad.
It’s very easy to keep a movement going in the minds of its followers, when every bad thing it does, can be explained away by “they’re not real feminists, good feminists don’t put down men”. When you can’t hold a movement responsible for its actions, it’s dangerous.
[–]suicidemeteor 7 points8 points9 points (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]girraween 8 points9 points10 points (3 children) | Copy Link
I do see a link to feminism and religion. It’s got the good and the bad (women and men), you have the devil, patriarchy. They have a very strict way of thinking and if something comes up that’s outside the feminist box, it’s not true.
Look at any Judeo Christian religion (only because they’re the ones I know most about), they all say they’re speaking the truth and doing good. Just like feminism. But then you see their actions, they’re hating on gay people, trans people. Their actions don’t match up with what they’re trying to preach.
Feminism, you check out their actions, or inactions. I see and hear a lot of man hate, see zero marches for men’s issues or even talked about in marches for women, I see zero men’s DV shelters opened by feminists.
[–]dungeonmonkey69 2 points3 points4 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Tbh once you start treating it and them as a cult, the easier it is to perceive them along the lines you need to. I could never put my finger on why it ticked me off so much till I started seeing the religious connection. They've got their right to believe what they believe but not the right to push it in my face, force convert me, or demonize me for being a non believer. Ive had enough problems mouthing off at churchies over that garbage let alone femmies.
[–]hyzermofo 2 points3 points4 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Just wanna jump in on the religion commentary here. I come from a family of charismatic Christians (happy-clappy, praying in tongues, etc) and while I consider myself a Christian too, I have many times had to rebuke other members of my family. Specifically on the question of gay marriage everyone had quite a lot to say against it. My response was basically, "Your job as a Christian is not to judge, but to love and forgive. This has nothing to do with you." Jesus has instructed us all to forgive our transgressors seven times seventy times every day. This is not to say homosexuality is a transgrrssion against Christians, but it is to exhort grace and forgiveness all the time.
TL;DR A Christian's job is to love and forgive, never to judge.
[–]dungeonmonkey69 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Hahahah I think many have lost their way with all that mate. Tell your preacher buddies to stop trying to convert me. Christians have been trying since I was a toddler (grew up in Samoa where it's ultra conservative and religiously oppressive to a degree). I get the exact same ugly feeling of being forced into dogma when talking to feminists in the west. It's so suffocating that feeling no matter whos doing it... I just want to be free of it.

the only "feminism" I accept is that at one time in history poor white men gained equality with rich white men, and then poor and rich white women no longer accepted being held as lesser and fought back. But it so nuanced because for all of the history that feminists can pull up where women were held as lesser to their fathers or husbands, they ignore that for all of that same time poor men were held as lesser to landowners. I think that all of the issues boild down to two things 1) once there was a class system and anyone not above was mistreated and 2) within that class system abused people went on to do terrible things so someone else could be "lesser" than them. 1) is a thing that changed for white men, but took longer to change for black men and women of all colors 2) is a product of bad people and not a thing of any big entity. The solution has always been simple, make everyone equal and punish shitty people without giving their shitty behavior an excuse like "the patriarchy". Men and women can be abusive, it's not about an outside entity it's about a single person being a shitty person. But I'm not a freaking expert, all I know is, some men have been shitty to me and some women have as well and I never really smelt a difference in the shit they piled on me.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points (2 children) | Copy Link
I have said it before and I'm saying it again, feminists only "call out" misandry in their movement whenever people criticize them for fostering these people in their communities while claiming to be for equality and they don't really call them out. They just pull a no true scotsmans fallacy or they justify the shit those people say even tho we know damn well that they wouldn't defend the people if the genders were reversed and in case people are unaware, double standards on the basis of gender is not gender equality. Misandrists are not some radical fringe within feminism, they're the overwhelming majority.
[–]iAntiMage 3 points4 points5 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Nailed it.. Hope more people recognize the majority and their views in the movement

yeah it's feminism. Feminism is misandry. It breeds hate for men and only seems to want to hurt men. That's the entire foundation of feminism. It has nothing to do with "equality" and everything to do with women dominating society through manipulation and hate.

When an elephant is small they tie their foot to a stake in the ground. They try to pull it out but aren’t strong enough and eventually give up. Adult elephants weight at least 10x as much as a baby and could easily pull the stake out of the ground.... but they never try. They are already broken.

I’ve heard that story so many times. My mom would use it to explain the scripture from the Bible “teach your children in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it”
It’s a two edged sword because yes, you need to teach your kids right from wrong, but when bad parents teach their kids they are worthless and weak, it is very hard for them to fight it even when they have the power to do so.
I think the key is this: “in the way they SHOULD go” ie not the way your twisted feminist mind thinks they should go. My mom’s parenting style was a mix of both good parenting and some abuse, but above all, she wanted me to be independent so with that independence I was able to separate truth from abuse and adapt accordingly. I got lucky

I love how people in the sub are more concerned about protecting the image of feminism rather than sympathizing with a male rape victim
[–]Exvareon 6 points7 points8 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Its not even just rape. It's literally abuse and torture. My eyes teared up reading the post. She broke the guy in pieces.
[–]Safwan_stark 1 point2 points3 points (0 children) | Copy Link
It is actually scary to think how many mothers like these are actually out there and how society tolerates them, i was watching a ted talk the other day where feminist mother basically explains how she raises her sons to make sure they don't become rapists and in one of the slides she literally edited her sons picture (a 7 year old) next to Harvey Weinstein with text saying "how?" The worst part is the audience were actually laughing and cheering for her.

EVERY. FUCKING. TIME!
And these are the same people who whine about people saying "#notallmen". Fuck off you idiot.

God this whole story is so sad. The people commenting "this isnt feminism" or "I am a feminist and don't think like this" this thread isn't the place to bring up feminism or make it about yourself and your views on it in any way. This guy just really needs support. His fears of feminism ARE valid, and it seems like saying that's not feminism is just a way of invalidating those fears. However, everyone here making this a point of "see this IS feminism" is like every single story of a creep man and the women saying "see ALL men are like this" it's plain hypocrisy. This wasn't a post on a page that was about feminism it was a raised by narcissist thread. I feel the only appropriate response is to offer support and care and validate that his mother abused him in the view of carrying out her own beliefs (in this case feminism ) and that it was wrong and it is okay to feel wary around woman or those who are very loudly feminists, while recognizing personally it's not our view or that we know they're not all bad, but it doesn't need to be brought up just then the same way we can support women who have been abused about being wary around men without implying that this should be the common view that they're all bad but their own personal feelings/fears are valid until they can work through them.
Basically what I'm saying is the whole "NOT ALL" statement or "that is NOT what X is about/are" is never appropriate when we're trying to comfort someone about personal trauma someone is sharing with us and understanding why that would make them feel that way.

Must I trot this out everytime:
"The history of mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpation on the part of man toward woman, having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over her."
Declaration of Sentiments, 1848
Feminism was a factor in the abuse. You can't simply brush it off as "Not all feminist are like that" because I don't recall any of those "Good Feminists" opposing such unwarranted vitriol towards all men back then.
[–]azazelcrowley 1 point2 points3 points (0 children) | Copy Link
"I'm just a stochastic terrorist, I don't support terrorism. That's not what stochastic terrorism is about.".
[–]Normal_Theory_9316 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
I think you missed my point, I was saying it's not appropriate to brush it off and say not all feminists are like this. I don't think the people in the comments saying "I am feminist and this isn't it" or "I'm not like that" etc should even be discussing their views on feminism in this setting besides to say something along the lines of your mother was feminist and she hurt you and that's not okay.
Where are you getting your feminist talking points from? No women came out and said not all men? Cause that's just not true, plenty did, many feminists as well. There are obvious extremes, but a good feminist is only about equal opportunity and that INCLUDES men. It's similar to saying all Republicans are racist, or all men are crap, in that it's just not true.

If I was dating her these then this would be a minefield of red flags Holy shit, why did no one pick up on this or call a child service branch
[–]Exvareon 1 point2 points3 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Because feminist = good, man = bad. People don't think she is capable of such a thing so they subconsciously ignore it, even if she is the monster she is. Child services would just ignore the abuse because its a mother and not a father.

I think I saw this in a movie once. It was called PSYCHO, directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
In all seriousness though, smother mothers, let alone feminist smother mothers are extremely dangerous people. His story is a great example of the cancer that is feminism. It's not at all about equality, it's about power.

[–]LaInquisitore 0 points1 point2 points (0 children) | Copy Link
So everyone there are saying that ain't feminism and it's mysandry They obviously don't get that third wave feminism is based upon misandry. We over here recently had a post by an ultra feminists Facebook page saying that all the women who want a family and a husband should 'get back to their patriarchal caves'. That's third wave feminism for you. They don't just hate the men, but also the women who happen to like men and want a family with them. Message of the story - fuck third-wave feminism.
[–]GoelandAnonyme -1 points0 points1 point (0 children) | Copy Link
No, they're not muting anyone who comments on feminism, but people who attack feminism based on the misconception it is equal to misandry or otherwise try to paint wll feminists bad based on this one situation. Anyway, hope I won't get banned for this.
[–]Musicrafter -5 points-4 points-3 points (2 children) | Copy Link
If you guys can't tell that yes, there is a huge difference between misandry and (even radical) feminism, you are ideologically blinded.

i think yall need to realize that feminism isnt thinking women are superior. thats toxic and not the real definition. i do feel bad for this kid but feminism isnt bad.
[–]Asspants22 13 points14 points15 points (6 children) | Copy Link
In modern times, its not the least bit good either.
[+]slut4larry -18 points-17 points-16 points (5 children) | Copy Link
no, just because people are calling themselves feminists, doesnt mean they are. its still the same thing, people just forget the real definition ig.
[–]TheBeees 13 points14 points15 points (4 children) | Copy Link
The toxic feminists are the ones that are raising millions of dollars, making policy, teaching our children and most recently, they're the ones infiltrating and hijacking pop culture. Until the "real" feminists will campaign for male abuse centers and will stop protesting male suicide support groups, then those fake feminists remain the face of the movement.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Or if those "real feminists" call out those "fake feminists" and tell them they're not welcome in their movement without having to be called out for fostering them in their movement first. If they do it completly on their own then I'll start to believe them. Until then....
[–]slut4larry -4 points-3 points-2 points (2 children) | Copy Link
if you do that then your AGAINST equality, making you NOT a feminist....
[–]TheBeees 1 point2 points3 points (1 child) | Copy Link
Sounds like a shit load of feminists aren't actually feminists then. Like...basically all the ones that actually matter. Until your ideology rallies around the idea that the ones spearheading your movement against men are actually preaching misandry and hatred to the easily swayed masses that are seduced by the pretty ideal of of a movement that at its roots presupposes a society where men are the enemy of women, then you'll continue to be treated based on the actual effects of the feminists movement, as opposed to the lofty ideals of liberal arts students and keyboard warriors.

I mean, if you're too stupid to understand what logical fallacies are, then I'm not going to waste my time fixing the failures of your school system. You've got Google, go educate yourself.
[–]slut4larry 0 points1 point2 points (26 children) | Copy Link
dude theres no need to call me stupid, not cool bro. also my school system isnt failing me im just still in it, as in im still learning. and as a girl who would like to grow up to have just as much rights as you, i dont like seeing the constant slander on women. 👍
[–]Dynged -1 points0 points1 point (25 children) | Copy Link
Cant understand what basic logical fallacies are, yet objects to being called stupid.
Yeah, you're stupid.
Also, what rights do you not have in the western world right now that men have? I'll give you a hint, it's none. You have every right and more that men have in the west.
My suggestion to you is if you dont want to be called stupid, go educate yourself outside of your little pity party echo chamber, or keep your mouth shut when you obviously have zero clue what you're talking about princess.
[–]slut4larry -1 points0 points1 point (24 children) | Copy Link
let me rephrase, i myself have every right to my knowledge. not all women though, even in the us and i dont plan on staying where i am my whole life. im more focused on the way we r treated though. im only 14 and not only do i get harassed whenever i go to the literal mall, but i have to worry about so many things like rape, ect. its gets old hearing men whine about how much they hate women bro, especially when men literally face zero problems because of their gender.
[–]LettuceBeGrateful 1 point2 points3 points (3 children) | Copy Link
Hey, so I'm not the same guy that's been responding to you and calling you stupid, but I wanted to actually address what you said so that you can understand more of where we're coming from. You said that men face no problems because of our gender, but we absolutely do.
In terms of problems we face:
The draft is male-only.
Only women have the right to genital integrity. Baby boys are circumcised every day.
Legally, straight men who are forced into sex is not defined as rape. If we include those men, then we find that half of all rape victims are men.
In some states, male-on-female assault is a worse crime than any other gender combination.
The Duluth model, an explicitly feminist paradigm and the most common DV-intervention program in the country, assumes that "men are encouraged and expected to control their partners." This results in male abuse victims being twice as likely as their abusers to be arrested.
A gender sentencing gap six times larger than the racial sentencing gap.
There are currently only two men's DV shelters, despite men comprising almost half of DV victims, and 70% of non-reciprocal victims.
The majority of suicides are men, and the majority of the homeless and destitute are men.
The PPACA (the Affordable Care Act, or "Obamacare") provides many services to women for free, including DV screening and counseling. This service is not provided to men. In fact, there is no page for men at all.
Regarding our objections to feminism, I understand that the dictionary definition of feminism is gender equality, and I truly believe that many individuals who call themselves feminists believe in gender equality. However, we are criticizing the activism and policy that has actively hurt men:
Women's advocacy groups, including feminists, fought against the Equal Rights Amendment. As a result, men are specifically excluded from having the legal right to genital integrity, and only men are obligated to sign up for the Selective Service.
Mary P. Koss, one of the most decorated feminists of the past few decades, published seminal research on rape that resulted in the current legal definition of rape: forced penetration. (Here she is in 2015 (skip to 8:30) claiming that a man is not raped, even if drugged and physically forced into sex. She considers it merely "unwanted contact.") As a result, false statistics are still published to this day saying that the vast majority of rape victims are women, when in reality half of rape victims are men.
The Duluth Model, an explicitly feminist DV intervention framework, is widely practiced by American police. As a result, a male abuse victim is twice as likely as his abuser to be arrested.
The National Organization for Women has torpedoed alimony and child support reform which had both popular and bipartisan support. (They also tweeted last year that men who are suing schools for unjust expulsion are bullies and rapists, which tells us how NOW views the presumption of innocence for men.)
Additionally, men have been stripped of the presumption of innocence, and many have had their lives destroyed because of unproven accusations of sexual misconduct:
Jonathan Kaimen.
Matt Boermeester. (Expelled from college, even after the alleged victim said he was innocent.)
Boy arrested and spent summer under house arrest over false accusations. He's now being homeschooled due to bullying, and there has been no consequence for his false accusers.
Albert Wilson Sentenced To Jail For Rape But Didn’t Have Sex With Victim. More about the victim, if you're interested.
None of this is intended to invalidate women's issues, I'm just trying to share the male perspective on things so we can be included in the conversation more in the future. The assumption that men don't have problems results in a lot of suffering being ignored, and as a society we can't fix these problems if we continue to ignore them.

Shut the actual fuck up, you have no idea about anything you're talking about princess. Until you've walked a mile in a mans shoes, much less an actual adults shoes, then you dont get to speak about what we do or dont face on a daily basis.
Go back to your tumblr hugbox you ignorant child.
