Wonder if they ever considered that the reason Ocean's 8 wasn't well received was because the movie stunk, not because of a female cast. Most remakes are pretty bad and they only came up with this idea in the search for "equality".

These flicks will almost always fail. You have a woman playing a male role like a male. This turns them basically into men with tits. Men don't like to watch men with tits. Men want to be the hero who rescues the princess. Women don't want to watch men with tits either. Women want to be the princess. And they want the hero (prince) to come to the rescue.

I begrudgingly watched Ocean's 8, and it was not good. The technology in the movie was a cop out, the plot was kind of boring even for a heist movie, and the editing was painfully reminiscent of Powerpoint. The acting was ok, but it was clear that they steered so far away from John Mulaney's idea for how an all-female heist movie would go down that it was clear that they were avoiding it.

Calls for increased diversity in films is not the issue. It's weird, but you'll generally find reviewers who have bias actually have consumers who share that bias, and no not the negative ones the filmmakers think is going on.

Everyone has a bias based on their background and history, and so it's not uncommon to reflect that in your work. A straight white man will have a different perspective than a straight white woman, or gay white man. People who read reviews look for relevance to their own experiences to serve as a gauge on how closely they relate to the reviewer and by extension how alike their thinking would be.

Does that mean there isn't diversity? No. There are black, Hispanic, native American, women, any kind of reviewer who offers their own unique perspective. However, thanks diversity includes their life experiences, meaning that all the cultural baggage comes with it and alters the reviewers perspective. It can be incredibly useful to get a reviewer with a different cultural experience, but most movie goers just want to know if they'll enjoy the movie, and ultimately that drives popularity.

Forcing gender and ethnic diversity will only lead to a situation like GamerGate, where reviewers virtue signal, call their audience racists and sexist, and lead to a massive consumer revolt. If that happens, either it will drive people away from listening to these reviews, or they'll revert to the tried and true formula that works.

So it's ultimately chaos followed by a return to the status quo it the collapse of a valuable tool of the film industry to show them what works and what falls flat.
