I can confirm. Brother-in-law works for a major uk newspaper and he is told if he, or anyone else, is reporting a crime, even if that criminal was proven guilty, they are to use the word "allegedly" instead of "guilty/not guity", unless the person has no chance of parole.

It is done because while it isn't common, enough people have been falsely convicted and were set free only to sue for damages all those that called them guilty.

Though it is used very well on Have I Got News For You, where they would tell a joke or a bare faced truth, only to jokingly add "allegedly" to cover their ass!
