This must be more of that evidence that 'Feminism helps men too' I keep hearing about ...

[–]DAE_FAP 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It'll help men know their place.

[–]scdi 15 points16 points17 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More like male feminists should seek treatment for their Stockholm Syndrome.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

So, does it? Are men's voices as equally important to women's in feminism? And can men even be feminists?

No, says newly retired gender politics academic Sheila Jeffreys, a leading figure of 1970s-style radical feminism.

She says men can be "pro-feminist but not feminists".

"Men do not like to be left out and many think they know better than women even about distinctively women's issues," she says. "Women daring to organise around their issues without men does actually threaten the power relations of male dominance, and this is why it is crucially important."

Professor Jeffreys likens this to trade unionism, saying members of "oppressed" groups must be able to meet and articulate their concerns without fear of being surveilled or interrupted.

If you believe that men have been the oppressors of women throughout history, and that sympathy and mutual appreciation between men and women is part of false consciousness, then you have to conclude that feminist women should be constantly renewing their suspicions of male colleagues lest they get used to them and end up liking them, and that men in the movement should spend much of their time renewing their guilt in self-criticism sessions.

These feminists are playing out their hatred of the entire male sex on the men who happen to be in the room with them. And those men are confused because they thought that being feminists would either make them one of the good guys, or would allow them to project their individual badness onto all men instead of having the badness of all men projected onto them.

Funny to watch, though. Couldn't happen to nicer guys...

I fully expect Mr Merryweather to spend the next decade of his life agonising over whether he is a 'feminist' or an 'ally'."

And then finally realise that feminism doesn't accept allies. Alliance is a reciprocal thing. You couldn't even call it serfhood or vassalage, because in the feudal system lords had some reciprocal obligations to their serfs and vassals. What feminists demand is unconditional surrender. Anything less is oppression.

[–]Blutarg 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly.

[–]rottingchrist 28 points29 points30 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's really cringeworthy to see men still so desperate to be feminists even after told in no uncertain terms, multiple times, and over a long period of time by prominent feminists that they aren't eligible to be.

[–]eaton80 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She might as well have said "Cuckold fetishists should shut-up and watch!".

It is becoming the same demographic more or less.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Most male feminists are so because they know / are around other feminists who don't treat them like this.

At least - not as long as they "stay in line". They don't encounter feminism at a "leadership" level, but rather encounter other self-proclaimed feminists who believe feminism is about equality and believe that the patriarchy is a thing.

Basically they are egalitarians who believe the feminist statistics, so they base their views on that. Heck - I think a wage gap of 23% for the same work is abysmal and should be fought against! The fact that I know it doesn't exist is what sets me apart from most male feminists.

The fact that I actually read MacKinnon instead of believing the oft repeated "she never claimed all sex is rape, it's just an MRA lie!" is what sets me apart.

Most importantly - the fact that the feminists I did hang out with became over time "academic feminists", and I got to see first hand the crazy therein - that sets me apart from most male feminists.

In other words - most of them just lack the knowledge we have. They believe the lies as those lies are so often repeated they seem credible. And most self proclaimed feminists (male and female) actually believe in equality. So what they see around them isn't "feminists kicking out men" but "feminists and men working together for a common goal".

The good thing is - the crazies are getting so much more vocal that now only a minority of the population (male and female) will even call themselves feminists. It will only get worse (well, better, depending how you look at it).

[–]Blutarg 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"who believe feminism is about equality and believe that the patriarchy is a thing"

The problem is there is no way to reconcile those two beliefs. If you say "I just want women to have the same rights that all men get from the all-powerful patriarchy that gives benefits and power to all men everywhere" then you will end up advocating for women to have more rights than men.

[–]Ted8367 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Professor Jeffreys ... has a suggestion for men who would be feminists ... they should "discuss" ... "why, for instance, do some men find it hard even to imagine being attracted to women who do not depilate".

Seriously, male feminists! What are you waiting for? This very important topic needs immediate discussion!

"This is an excellent question

sez the good Perfesser

and men need to talk through this on their own. Women should not have to listen to it."

That's either an elaborate fuck off, or it's serious academic feminism as usual. Difficult to tell, really.

[–]baskandpurr[🍰] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

men find it hard even to imagine being attracted to women who do not depilate

Because women have no preference at all, right? They don't care about tall, dark and handsome. Muscular? Big cock? Wealthy? Nope, a woman would have no problem being attracted to men who have none of these attributes.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Is this where they tell us that feminism is about equality of the sexes?

[–]Inertbert 7 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I guess they are going for separate but equal.

[–]Blutarg 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Somepeople are more equal than others.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Feminists only respect men who don't respect them.

[–]chavelah 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Untrue. I respect all people who deal with their own shit and don't try to hamstring me while I am dealing with mine. So, in general, I have more respect for MRAs than male feminists. Much as I can be frustrated with MRAs for navel-gazing instead of doing the grassroots work that needs doing, male feminists have that tendency 10X.

[–]YetAnotherCommenter 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Professor Jeffreys is cut from the same cloth as Dworkin. The fact that Third Wavers, who once tried to claim Dworkin and co were "the radicals, don't listen to them" are now totally accepting the legacy of that kind of feminism, truly says everything.

[–]Leinadro 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Honestly I feel sorry for male feminists. Female feminists often say "if you believe ib equality then you're a feminist" when met with people saying they dont ID as such.

But as we can see there is more to it being a feminist than what you believe.

Simply out feminists want to have it both ways. They want the credit for the work men do by claiming they are male feminists but dont want the men themselves.

Its a lot like how some white people want every part of black culture except for the actual being black part.

[–]GHGCottage 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't feel sorry for them at all as they support sex and race discrimination. Some (most?) male feminists have real privilege that they hope to preserve by supporting feminist work to divide and conquer the bulk of the population. They understand that real reform measures based on socioeconomic privilege might impact them, whereas sex and race discrimination programs are easily overcome by their family wealth and power.

[–]rg57 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is where feminists and I can agree. Male feminists should "shut up and listen".

Of course, I prefer they listen to MRAs, but ....

[–]v573v 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

According to #HeFor#She, feminism was "originally conceived as a struggle led only by women for women".

History tells a different story. it has both men and women fighting for women's rights.

[–]Blutarg 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not only that, men basically handed over a whole bunch of rights to women. "Want to vote? Sure, here you go."

[–]Kuato2012 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

John Stuart Mill doesn't real.

[–]rottingchrist 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Can't say he doesn't deserve the erasure. He willingly supported people like these.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Erasure? The dude is published, dude is prominently mentioned in the work of feminist researchers, dude bankrolled the movement when it was about winning the rights to property. Anti-JSM? You're trying too hard hun.

Feminists tell a different story.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Mill was married to a feminist. She led his research by making him more aware of womens' issues. He was very much ahead of his time, and his work is still referred to in terms of its historical import. Modern feminists don't need Mill, much like modern physicists don't need Gallileo; he did his job.

[–]v573v 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Modern physicists don't acknowledge Gallileo as a physicist?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That's a disingenuous leap - they don't have to acknowledge his work every time they build on it.

[–]v573v 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They also don't go out of their way to rewrite a history that doesn't include him or others that have made contributions because he doesn't match their ideals.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Who did this? His work is widely accessible, cited.

[–]rottingchrist 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She has a suggestion for men who would be feminists: they should form groups of their own. Unlike Doug's feminism club, however, Professor Jeffreys suggests they should "discuss and problematize their own experience".

What a wonderful idea! I can't believe we did not think of it...

"When you say that women shouldn't be beaten by their partners, or when you actively ask a woman's consent before a man puts their penis inside her, you are not practising feminism – you are performing the most basic, bare-minimum actions required to participate in society without being a criminal."

"But, you know, I wonder how far someone can go in their readings of feminism without realising that as a man, it's not really about you."

Actually, you really do not need to go very far in any research before realizing that as a man, it is entirely about me.

[–]_olas 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I just noticed I was banned from r/feminism :(. I posted one thing.

"I think it's unfair to say men's rights activists should stop. Any hate speech won't further their goals and that seems to be a common criticism against them. But, seeing killallmen and maletears trend in feminist circles, I have to wonder if either group should have a monopoly on the idea of equality."

I could have presented my point better, but it's hard to believe it should justify a ban.

[–]electricalnoise 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think you presented it just fine. And it's a damned strong point.

[–]rodrigogirao 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Male feminist" is as dumb as "black klansman". Why join a movement that's devoted to oppressing you?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She sympathises with Carson and other men who are frustrated at not being welcomed into feminism's inner sanctum. "But, you know, I wonder how far someone can go in their readings of feminism without realising that as a man, it's not really about you."

If feminism would just admit this and stop claiming to be about equality, I'd at least have some level of respect for it. It just keeps trying to claim gender equality for itself and that "feminism helps men too". It's not about helping men at all.

Sorry, but attacking the boogieman Patriarchy isn't helping men or women. It's a waste of time and effort for everyone.

though I would imagine the reasoning behind those words is something to the effect of, "Men have it all already, so women need more to catch up! That's why feminism is about equality, since it's helping women get there!" To which I give a huge eye roll.

[–]Lucidswirl2 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This isn't a mainstream view of feminism tbh. Most feminists I've met have no issue with and actively encourage men to identify as feminists.

[–]Xemnas81 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Which I appreciate…but it is really telling that the feminists in power, publishing reports and articles, getting mainstream coverage and representing the movement are the rad-fems shitting over men, don't you think?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've never seen a black person tell someone like Tim Wise to shut the hell up.

[–]ExpendableOne 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sooner or later, every male feminist out there has to realize that feminism never had their best interest at heart, and that all that superficial female approval they might be getting from associating with feminism really isn't worth the moral/personal price they are paying.

[–]rottingchrist 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminism has been going strong for over a century. And during all of that time, it's had a lot of male supporters. Can't see that changing anytime soon. There'll always be enough men with cripplingly low self-esteem, or sociopathic tendencies to latch onto political movements they feel they can gain from.

[–]chocoboat 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Should Hispanic equal rights activists just shut the hell up? Should female CEOs just shut the hell up? Should black politicians just shut the hell up?

Oh look, it doesn't sound so nice when you say those things, does it.

[–]ashlaaaaay 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Now that's a headline I can get behind.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Grow up male

grow up around males

still believe males don't need their shit checked for generally every kind of behavior that circumvents freedom, agency, the laws of man and nature, etc.

Haha, you wanna talk stockholm syndrome? Poor motherfuckers.

[–]Erociter 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

still believe males don't need their shit checked for generally every kind of behavior that circumvents freedom, agency, the laws of man and nature, etc.

You would make a terrible male feminist.

Having opinions and talking when you are not allowed...mansplaining in feminist shorthand.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

...If we were all basing our conception of feminism off of the /r/mensrights interpretation of some niche feminist group, which is all you have, then sure.

[–]Erociter 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Uh, huh. Mansplaining is hardly a niche concept to feminists.

I'm sorry, I was complementing you previously, but it seems you are a male feminist.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're just borrowing words and placing them where you please, context completely unconsidered. It's not clever.
