CA is 1/2 the length of the marriage for marriages less than 10 years. Marriages over 10 years are considered "long term" and while it may seem like lifetime alimony, it's not. They simply do not put a termination date on it. And the payor can request that alimony be reexamined if there are substantial changes to the payee's circumstances. Neither of the lawyers I went too had ever heard of the courts ordering lifetime alimony.

If they are young you are going to likely pay both alimony and child support longer

Rule of thumb is 1 year for every three of the marriage
