Seems like another one for the breaking mom sub. But seriously, this is why I’m terrified for all the women who decided to become financially dependent stay at home moms with three kids. What happens when he stops respecting you and starts financially abusing you. Where do you go with multiple kids in tow? Whom do you turn to? Forget three kids I’d be terrified of having even one child exposed to any form of abuse or neglect.

No one should be SAHM unless they already have their own source of income. It is too risky. An adult without any income is too vulnerable for any predatory behavior

It annoys me so fucking much that there's this huge disconnect between "stay at home mom" and "astronomical childcare costs". Like none of these dipshits seem to put two and two together that having their wife stay at home is not some luxury that they bestow on her, it's saving your family thousands. It seems that childcare labour only has value when you're paying someone else for it.

Many years ago I read an article in the Guardian (I think) where SAHMs from a wealthy London suburbs told how it was very common in their crowd to negotiate a salary and even high bonuses every year with their husbands for the work they do at home. IIRC they even drew up legal contracts for that. These were well educated, wealthy women, who gave up high paying careers to be at home. They were essentially the managers of the household and paid accordingly as well as given staff (like cleaners, a driver or a nanny for “their days off”)

I remember finding this article and the attitude of these women so bizarre, surely a good mother would never ask for money to take care of her kids. It sounded like they only cared about money to me who was a lonely pick me, who would have done everything just to be loved by a man and a few babies and not feel so worthless for not being wanted/needed.

Now 10 years later and me being knee deep in FDS and forever child-free I applaud these ladies for finding the only sustainable way of handling the SAHM situation.

If you’re a SAHM, do at least two things:

One, agree to divert part of your husband’s salary into an account that’s only in your name. You’re saving thousands of dollars in childcare and should share in part of that as a means of independence.

Second, and no less important, make sure you are aware of every account that you have money in, know all the logins and passwords, and keep an eye on the deposits, withdrawals and balances to make sure that he’s not moving money out of the accounts.

Posts like this remind me once again how high value (and rare) men like my dad are. He was the breadwinner but also very involved in household chores and raising me. On the weekends, he often took me to movies or the hardware store or wherever to get me out of my mom's hair. There was no expectations that he returned to a magically clean house or anything.
