I think it’s so RIDICULOUS when men think marriage is the same as a wedding and use “expensive, not worth it, bougie” to define what should be a symbol of love and commitment. No one is asking you to spend millions on your big day. As the saying goes “a wedding is a day meant for two people”. Only you decide what it will look like. You want a big wedding? Good! You want a small ceremony for friends and family? Good. I have friends who had a courthouse wedding just for family members and spent the rest of their budget in a beautiful honeymoon trip for two in a five-star hotel. They also hired a professional photographer and got some beautiful couple shots together on the beach for their wedding album. And no one complained and the couple was happy.

No money? Have a cheap wedding. Get married at the court house, in your backyard, at a friends backyard, etc. Some backyard weddings actually turn out really well.

Social anxiety? Invite 5-10 people to the wedding. Parents and closest friends. Problem solved.

Weddings are about compromise. It’s rare that the bride and groom want 100% of the same things. The guy is just lying to himself and his gf. He clearly doesn’t want to get married.

I watched a korean drama where the story was similar. The girl wanted to marry and the guy did not, he thought it was pointless even tho he loved the girl. One night, he wants to have sex with her. They make out and then she stops and tells him "actually I can't have sex with you anymore". He wonders why and she says "according to evopsy, women only mate with men when they feel secured, back then it meant that the guy needed to be strong and to provide lots of food for her. You don't want to marry, ok, well I can't have sex with you because I don't feel secure. I can get pregnant at any time and not be protected by you or the law since we're not married."

I don't know what to make about marriage anymore. It looks nice in the movies but people say marriage destroys relationships. I don't want my partner to ever think he's tied me down and that he doesn't have to keep trying to impress me anymore. Yet the idea of comfort sounds good.
