I've come to a slow-dawning realization that most of the married people I know are unhappy.

All of my friends' and family members' marriages have the same dynamic where the wife feels like the only adult in the room-- picking up, cleaning up, restraining her husband's impulses to overspend, running the household, and the husband resents the wife for being a nag and a bore and not wanting to have sex anymore

I spend time with quite a few senior citizens and the ladies are such a delight. They're *funny* and optimistic and their DGAF is turned up to 11 and they are a joy to be around. The senior men are grumpy and erratic and every single one treats his wife poorly. The married couples I know over age 65 all seem like they really dislike each other and are only staying married out of habit.

My question is, do you think this dynamic can be broken? I'm afraid of getting married if this is my eventual fate. Do you think if 2 people met in adulthood and were't married for 50 or more years, they could be friends and lovers their whole lives? Or is marriage doomed to this pattern?
