She's chasing validation and self worth from men/marriage. She doesn't need to get married, she needs a therapist. Her standards are incredibly low. It's not just a fumble on the boyfriend's part. A good person who fumbled would have a different reaction to her being upset. Instead, he got mad. Veeeery telling.

This is all obviously tragic, but two things that stand out to me:

- "He said he was going to"... when men pull this crap "I was going to do this romantic thing" it's always a lie. A manipulative lie to make the woman feel bad for having had expectations (usually of the bare minimum) and make her feel ungrateful.

- The commentators seem to say that he's not the asshole and just clueless and she agrees. Clueless?? How clueless can you be that it is utterly distasteful and disrespectful to give the same ring given to his ex (and even detailing how it went to his current ex), and one found on the floor at that. This is not being clueless, this is not giving a shit about his girlfriend and taking advantage of knowing she's a pick me who takes low effort from her exes and from him. Wtf are the people who excuse him drinking??

Oh my god, that edit. This poor woman is so convinced that she doesn't deserve anything from her relationship - not even a text response to a heartfelt message. How is "should I propose with the ring I tried to give my ex" even a legitimate question? She is asking for the absolute bare minimum here, and still minimising her feelings and assuring him that she will love him even if he doesn't meet the absolute lowest standards for a partner. You can feel the ingrained self-deprecation and lack of self-worth in that message.

Reading this made me so sad.

The topic of giving a ring meant for someone else to a new woman came up when I was in my early 20s among my male friends.

My ex at the time had just used an item he got special for us with a new girl he was dating (I know that sounds really weird but it’s not a sex thing, just an everyday thing with sentimental value to the relationship, I’m just being vague because it’s too specific).

So I was really upset and talking about that with my guy friends and they did not get it. They thought I was overreacting, it was just a thing after all. So I used the engagement ring as an analogy... like would it be ok if it was an engagement ring? Thinking clearly they’d get it then.

Nope. They all thought that was fine too. It was just a thing. Who cares?

I was absolutely flabbergasted. In what universe is that ok?! Do they have no sentimentality at all? Or even the foggiest notion that sentimental things matter to other people?

Lol. I wanted to give the impression I wasn't a hold digger, so I purposely dated broke men. Thousands of dollars in debt and years of wisdom taught me. Next man I let in my life, better make as much as me if not more. Being the sole provider put me in situations I didn't deserve.
