Hey ladies!

I used to really enjoy lurking relationship advice type subreddits, but lately it's just made me so angry and frustrated because of how much it highlights what men get away with and what women excuse.
There's SO MANY 'he forgot my birthday/mothers day' posts for example, and in almost all of them the woman is saying "I know this is petty but I'm hurt." Like we've been so conditioned to never expect anything that people think it is silly or petty or materialistic to care about your own birthday?!
And then the comments usually say a variation of "Have you heard of the 5 love languages? He probably expresses his love for you in a different way and you should communicate!"
How is that an excuse? The 5 love languages applied to this would be that he cleaned the entire house and got her her favorite chocolate bar, while she cares more about gifts she can keep forever. Or he bought an expensive gift but she would place higher value on a heartfelt, handwritten list of favorite memories. Not doing NOTHING!

I'm grateful for this sub and I feel like my eyes have been opened in a lot of ways, but the unfortunate side of that is the frustration I feel when I see society reinforcing sexist norms and standards and continuing to allow selfish, entitled men to get away with their bullshit. Can anyone relate?
